7 - Money makes a huge difference

My phone kept buzzing, but I didn't want to pick it up. I didn't want to be disturbed. Spending time alone like this was the time when I could replenish my lost energy. "Mhhh... It would be so much easier if I didn't have to deal with anything. Just living the carefree life without having to care about anyone else..." I sighed again. I finished my glass of champagne and took a turn for the bathroom. I took my shirt and tie off in front of the big mirror to see if my muscles hadn't disappeared. "Still there, good!" I splashed my face with cold water. I was still boiling inside. Cooling my face should have helped at least a bit and if not, then a cold shower was the clear winner. I entered the place for showering and turned the cold water on. "Am I crazy?!" I ran out without even turning it off. That's too freakin cold! Just what i***t came up with taking cold showers?! No cold shower today. The water is damn freezing! I wouldn't be surprised if ice cubes started falling out! Sophia "Just time to sleep, huh?" I looked at the tiny alarm clock next to my pillow on the second floor of the bunk bed. I turned on my back and just stared at the dark ceiling. A storm was raging outside. I could hear all the rain hitting the windows harder than before. My clothes were drying in the corridor. The whole place was quiet and dark. I turned on my side and closed my eyes, trying to fall asleep. I'll visit grandma tomorrow morning before going to school. I should bring her some fruit, hope I have enough money to get her some nice bananas and apples. Oranges are too expensive nowadays. I drifted off to sleep without knowing it. "Mum! Dad! What are you doing here?!" I shouted at them, seeing them in the garden of my grandparents' house. "Oh, sweetie! We came to pick you up! We thought that you'd feel lonely in the house when your grandparents are out! Let's go to the park together!" My mother was happily smiling, waiting with her arms wide open. My dad behind her, wearing thick glasses, was kindly smiling as well. "I'm not a kid anymore! I'm seventeen!" I said but ran to her arms nevertheless. I missed her warm embrace. "That's my girl! Have you been doing well? I hope you won't be mad with us for leaving you here for so long!" My mum was stroking my hair. I could feel her body's warmth. My heart felt warm and fuzzy. My parents were kind and warm-hearted people, same as my grandparents, my mum's parents. My dad's parents lived in another country and I never had the chance to meet them. But I heard they owned a small business, something like a tiny local supermarket, which was doing well for them to get by. "What took you so long? Mum, dad?" I asked them after I had enough of their hugs. I saw my dad's mouth moving as if he was saying something, but I couldn't hear him. "What did you say? I can't hear you!" I asked him, but the same happened. His mouth was moving without making any sound. I sat up with the loud ringing sound of the alarm clock. My heart was nearly jumping out of my chest and I was trying to catch my breath. It was a dream! It was just a dream! Snap out of it! I slapped my cheeks hard. I didn't want to believe that it was only a dream. It felt so alive! It felt like reality! But my reality was the loud ringing alarm next to my pillow, which I didn't turn off. I quickly tapped the top to get rid of the awfully loud sharp sound. "I need to get a new alarm," I mumbled while I was climbing down from the bed, after making the sheets. It was quite cold. It wasn't summer anymore after all. Autumn was slowly creeping up on all of us, which meant I would have to start using the heater soon. That meant spending more money on heating the whole place. "Maybe I should find a part-time job at least for the weekends." I was making just simple quick scrambled eggs with bread, one of the cheapest things one could eat for breakfast. I usually just had eggs and bread for breakfast with shaved carrot pieces. Then I made sure to wash my face and brush my teeth, saving as much water as I could. I came out from the dark bathroom into the corridor, where I left my school uniform to dry yesterday. It was still a bit wet. "Hope it gets dry by the time I get back from the hospital!" I moved the clotheshorse near the open window, hoping the moving air would help it dry faster. "Okay, I have the snacks for grandma, just need to drop by the supermarket for some fruit. I'll be back soon!" I closed the main door, locked after myself, and ran to catch the first bus for grandma's hospital. It was only before six in the morning. Benjamin "Good morning, sir. It's seven-thirty in the morning. Time for you to start getting ready for going to school. Today's weather is going to be quite pleasant, it should be sunny and about twenty degrees Celsius." The house butler was my daily alarm and weather forecast in one. He opened the heavy curtains, that were resting on my windows, to let the light in. My eyes didn't want to adjust to the sudden brightness. "Simon, just ten more minutes. I'll get up after that." I murmured, turned to the other side, and tried falling asleep again. "Sir, you have to get up now. You shouldn't have had the champagne yesterday evening, knowing you would have to wake up to attend your classes today!" He tore the blanket from my naked body. "Simon!" I quickly sprung up to sit down and pull the blanket back to cover the lower part of my body. "Breakfast will be served in fifteen minutes. I hope you can make it on time." And with that, he left the room, leaving me there half-awake, still trying to protect my private parts, so no one would see. "Master Benjamin! We brought you the freshly ironed uniform. Would you like to have the tea served in your room before breakfast?" One of the maids asked me. Why did they always have to come in pairs of two? "No, I'll have tea in the dining room! Leave!" I raised my voice at them, pulling the blanket even higher. As if I would let them see my body! Both of them promptly left my apartment. It was finally quiet here. My bare feet touched the cold floor. I shuffled a bit sideways to find the slippers with my feet. I slipped into them and went for a warm shower. I had fifteen minutes to enjoy the warm water and slowly wake up. What a morning! Maybe I should sleep with clothes on if they keep barging in my room just like that! To think that Simon would even go as far as to pull the blanket away from my body... I was standing below the hot shower. The water was pouring from the ceiling, falling on my body. Warm showers in the morning were the best thing I could ask for. Not being disturbed, the quietness and sound of falling water. Pure heaven... With a white towel wrapped around my waist, I wiped the mist off of the big mirror to see my face. "Not bad today. I think this could work." Seeing my face in the morning would always put me in a good mood. This high-class smooth face, which I managed to get using premium creams and facial care. I gently stroked my cheeks. I put on my Calvin Klein underwear and opened the door to the bathroom, which was connected to my bedroom. From there I walked through the double-winged door to my living room, where the maids left my school uniform. First, before even putting it on, I made sure that it was ironed properly and had no stains left on it. "They did a good job today, unlike a few days back. Giving me clothes, which had a crumpled part around the buttons. Useless people. Only made me mad. Why do we even pay them for this..." I slipped in the white shirt and buttoned it. I tied my tie and put on the jacket. I finally checked myself in the mirror, made sure my hair was looking fine, and went downstairs for breakfast. "You're late." My father's cold voice greeted me the moment I appeared in front of the dining room. The doors to the room were wide open. "I believe that the time I eat my breakfast doesn't need to concern you," I spoke back to him. He didn't even raise his eyes to greet me. He was eating and reading news on his tablet. My step-mother was sitting next to him by his side. Father was sitting at the top of the table, while she was on his right-hand side. "But your food is cold now, dear! We expected you a good ten minutes ago!" She exclaimed with a feigned worry in her voice. "I believe that Simon can get it reheated," I muttered back to her. What a morning. Full of annoying people! "Right away, sir." He bowed slightly, taking a plate with scrambled eggs and sausages away to get them warm. The step-monster was staring at me, while father didn't care about what was going on. I bet he was monitoring his stocks going up. "I hope you have a nice day at school, sweetheart." The step-monster was trying to sound nice and caring in front of my father. "Thanks. I hope you enjoy your window views, till you can." I scoffed at her. "What do you mean?" Her voice was high-pitched. She understood, what I meant by that, very well. "I meant until the weather gets bad. Today is supposed to be good weather." I muttered at her, not caring about the scene she wanted to make. My food finally arrived. Sophia "Grandma! I brought you some fruit!" I opened the door of the room my grandma was staying in, together with other patients. All of them were already up because of morning rounds. "You didn't have to, dear! You should eat them yourself! You have to make sure you are healthy!" Grandma gently stroked my cheek when I got to her bed. "I am doing well! Look, I'm really strong!" I flexed my arms muscles to show her. "Want to try how hard they are?" I jokingly asked, trying to make her laugh. But she only smiled. "Are you doing well?" I sat down on her bed, taking her hand in mine. "The doctors are taking really good care of me! I couldn't be better, dear!" She patted the top of my hand, which was holding hers. I smiled. Knowing that she was doing quite well before going to school encouraged me to do even better today.
