2 - She doesn't belong here

I turned my head back to face the front. Back at my former school the environment for studying used to be a bit more friendship-friendly. Our desks were very close to each other's and we could chat easily. Sometimes we were even sending little letters to each other, playing games and so on. Here it was quite impossible. There was at least about a meter gap between my desk and the desk of the next person. Tell me something about how these wealthy people learn to be so distant from others... "Well, if you have a look at this painting..." The voice of the teacher just faded into the background as I was taking in the new environment. My eyes were caressing the walls around, checking every single painting hanged there. When I finished admiring the still life with a bouquet in a vase, my eyes rested on the students in the class. They also didn't look like they were paying any attention. But instead of chatting with each other or sending tiny folded letters, they were chatting on their phones! Their faces were glued to the screens of the all newest models of smartphones. Compared to mine... I've had the same phone for a few years already. I was happy to receive my first smartphone when I was around fourteen. Over three years later, still the same old phone. I wish I could have the same phone as them. Or at least something newer. The battery of this one has started dying too fast recently... "That is all for today, make sure you gather yourselves to join the class for the French language in the next building. This year you will be joining the third years in the advanced French class. Hope none of you embarrass our department's French education you have received in your previous year." With that said, she stared at me. If her stare would have power, I would drop down like a dead fish. Why is she fussing so much about French? It's not like I took the classes they had here last year, nor did I go to any private school. I never had a private teacher, either. I managed to study some French at my previous school and the rest I did with youtube videos and borrowed books from our local library. But that doesn't mean I am worse than the students here!  I wasn't much of a prodigy when it came to languages, but I was a bit better than the average. I also put a lot of effort into studying at home, trying to make up for the poor education I was receiving at my previous school. It wasn't really the school's fault. It was a school mostly funded by the government for people, who didn't have much money. For me, my family wasn't too well-off, but we could at least afford food. After my parents had died, I was sent to my grandparents. My grandpa passed away last year in the summer and my grandma had been sickly since then. Most of the time she was sent in and out of the hospital and the savings grandpa and my parents had left for us were getting shorter. I had a choice, start working or find a place with a full scholarship. So, even though I wanted to come to this school, it was more of a must than an option when they offered to pay all of my tuition and meals. "What are you doing? Aren't you coming for the class, newbie? We have it joined with third-years! You better hurry up or there won't be any good seats left!" The person, who I later learned was the class president, called on me from the doorframe. Everyone managed to leave the classroom, leaving me there deep in my thoughts. "Are you coming or not? I don't want to be late because of you!" He didn't seem like a bad person. He even waited for me, while everyone else had left. "Yes! I'm coming!" I jumped up from my chair, grabbed all of my belongings, and ran to the class president, so he wouldn't have to wait for too long. Benjamin "Sir, you can't be serious! I and the student council do not agree to study with the person, who came here through scholarship! She is a disgrace to all of us! She doesn't know how to behave in a higher society! What if the students learn some bad behavioral patterns from her! Our Highlands High school is known for the proper etiquette of its students, as well as their noble behavior and intentions! You just cannot let a person like that, who never had even a taste of anything close to our environment and upbringing, into our school grounds to study with the rest of us! The student council, who is representing all the students in this school, is strongly disagreeing with the newest regulation!" I was seriously upset about letting someone so unworthy to enter the school premises. She didn't have a single bit of education, which we had received since we were born. Ever since we were speaking and walking, our families made sure we had the best teachers for everything. For our behavior, table manners, ways of speaking, walking, and even our education! Why would they make someone, who has never had anything like that, even enter the same class as us? They should have made a separate class just for her! "Manners, Benjamin. You are in the principal's office, not in a marketplace." The principal stood with his back to me, staring out of the big windows this whole time, not giving me a single glance. "But sir! It will be a disgrace to let her dine with other students as well! Our school observes the most strict etiquette when it comes to table manners! I am sure she won't know how to behave during our mealtime!" I kept on protesting. I'm not letting this go. There is no way she is going to spend time with other students. Such a filth doesn't belong to this school! She should return to where she came from! "Benjamin!" The principal raised his voice at me. This time he turned around and looked at me. Finally. "Yes?" I asked him, standing in a designed stance for speaking to the principal of this school. Hands behind my back, straightened back, and properly-worn attire. "It is time for you to understand, that this world doesn't revolve only around the social bubble you have grown up in. There are people, who are more unfortunate, who didn't have everything available to them ever since they saw the light of the day. One of this school's principles to teach, among others, is the principle of tolerance and acceptance. We have to be tolerant of others and accept the situation anyone lives in. Since you have the money, what would you do with a stray kitten that has bumped to you on the street?" This damn principal! Always loving to give others riddles and turning them into life lessons! "I would ask my butler to make sure to give it shelter, food and raise it well for me. If it wasn't allowed, I would tell him to take it to a shelter and send donations there in my name. Since being generous is one of the principles I've been taught." I answered truthfully. Animals were the poor souls, who didn't have an option of saving themselves. If we didn't help them, they would suffer until the end. "It is the same as with that girl, Benjamin. She didn't live the pampered life, she fought her way through it. Sadly, this school cannot do the same to you, we cannot make you suffer, so you experience proper life. But what we can do is that we make sure a few students like her come here and share their way of living with others. It is time for you to learn to listen to others, see how others live as well. It will be a great experience for you and for other students as well." No matter what I told him, he always managed to come out as the smarter one. I clicked my teeth. "Manners!" He raised his voice at me. "I apologize, sir." This is seriously deep dung. I wanted to spend my last year in peace, not having to deal with some weird girl. I bet she is a little lost soul, wandering around the premises, trying to find her classroom, haha. Serves her right! She shouldn't have come here! I'll make sure she learns her place! I will make her stay here at least as tough as her life was supposed to be according to the principal! "I assigned her class president to take care of her. He is your vice-president in the student council, so if you have any further inquiries, please discuss them together first. I will welcome any productive ideas to make this school a better and more comfortable place for all the students! ...Now, you can go. You're already late for your French class! I hope you don't go missing on your classes again with the excuse of having home-tutoring. The school requires full attendance, Benjamin!" The principal said his last words. I left his office, wishing I could slam the door behind me. "Just you wait, I'll show you how much of an ill fit she is for this place! She'll even happily leave herself!" I talked to the closed double-winged door outside his office. Things I couldn't say directly to the principal. He would make a living hell for me if he blabbered anything to my pops! Now, let's see about this new girl. By the end of this week, she'll run out of this school faster than the speed of light!
