Chapter 4 The port where they stopped for the afternoon was a small village. It appeared to Todd the main income for the local residents came from fishing and passengers from the riverboats. There were some shops, though the shelves were a bit bare. It was clear these people were feeling the economic pitfalls of the war. The restaurant and two cafés overlooking the wharf and water were doing a good tourist business, however, thanks to the many varieties of river fish available. It was a stark contrast to their home in Elk’s Ridge far to the north in Yellowknife. The influx of people displaced by battles and seeking to restart brought an economic boon to Elk’s Ridge and, Todd suspected, a good part of Yellowknife Protectorate. This town had much stricter rules concerning slaves, though.
