Raelynn
“This is nuts.” I confessed as he arranged a few things on the desk. “I have so many questions that my mind is overflowing and one of the main things I can’t seem to get out of my head is how you guys even knew about me. How do you know I am even a demon? I haven’t ever had anything weird happen to me and every time I had blood work it came back as human.” My head started throbbing and my chest was getting tighter. “Why have us in this room when we could of meet someone nicer and talked all of this through before splitting Sasha and I up. How do I know you guys will keep your word on us being together and us somewhat safe here?”
He gazed down at my hands and stepped back with a look of fear in his eyes. I wasn’t even yelling yet and he was starting to act like I was a bomb waiting to explode. I clenched my fists feeling a tingling sensation run from the tips of my fingers all the way up to my shoulders.
Mr. Trevor put his hands on his hips and smiled at me. “This is why we meet here and do the tests.” He pointed to my hands where I found green and purple sparks coming out of the ends of them. “Take a deep breath and relax your mind. It will go away. I can say I haven’t ever seen that combo of sparks before so figuring out your blood line will be a fun mystery to solve.”
“Fun?” I croaked out as I tried flinging my hands around so maybe the sparks would get the heck off but it only made things worse. They were now brighter, bigger, and increased the tingling to all over my body. “How did this happen? I’ve never had this happen before.” My hands were feeling a bit off before he pointed out I was my own sparkler but nothing big enough to cause concern or so I thought.
“You need to relax. Take a few deep breaths and think of a happy time in your life and not focus on your hands.” He instructed as we kept our eyes on my hands.
“Happy times… Got it.” I thought about first meeting Sasha and Jerrick. I thought about our first Christmas together where I had gotten my first ever present that wasn’t broken or a complete afterthought. The tingling died down as well as the sparks until they were completely gone. Holy crap, Horns was right.
“Very good.” He pulled a black box out from behind his back. That must be what he grabbed out from his briefcase. “This is a power scanner. This and the results from the blood test will show us where you are power wise on our scale. So please move to the middle of the room and stand with your feet shoulder width apart.”
I stood up and walked over beside him slower than I normally walk. I think I knew this wasn’t going to feel the best. Checking someone’s power in any realm of being usually meant pushing past what you normally do. He helped me get in position and made sure to tell me it only hurts a little bit. I called him a big fibber but he laughed it off. Here goes nothing, I guess.
“Now I need you to close your eyes and focus on finding where your magic resides within yourself,” he ordered. “The easier it is to find the stronger you are so don’t worry if it takes a while. I will start scanning when you close your eyes.”
I took a few easy breaths before closing my eyes and starting my search. I had no clue on what the heck I was doing and it freaked me out that he made it sound so easy. Just find it, like that was great instructions. I rolled my eyes knowing he wouldn’t see it and ordered myself to women up and find my dang powers.
It didn’t take long of me checking out my body and seeing if it felt any different to realize that I was feeling a weak tug but once I put all my focus in following where it led I felt it become a more forceful tug. It was pulling me towards the center of my chest and I dove toward it. It made me feel safe and trusting which was way out of character for me. The closer I got, the farther away my actual surroundings sounded until it was only the beat of my heart matching the pulse of my power. It made me feel like I was getting the biggest and best hug I have ever gotten. It made me feel loved, safe, and like I had come home. It was filling a piece of my heart I never knew I needed filled. I started to wish I could stay there forever and forget everything else.
“All done.”
I heard from in front of me, ripping me away from my powers and bringing me back to reality. My eyes popped open and I felt tears on my face before I even realized who was talking to me.
I focused on a worried Mr. Trevor. “Hey, are you ok? It should have only hurt a small amount before pulling a few samples of your power from you.”
“Huh? What?” I had no clue what he was talking about. “Pulling my power from me? What does that mean?”
“Yes, this scan makes your body feel like it should be using your powers in different scenarios, and it exhausts it making you feel like you ran thirty miles uphill in a twenty-minute time frame.” He had grabbed out a laptop while I was focusing on my powers and was now hooking up the scanner to it.
I took stock of how I was feeling and I was a bit tired but nothing like he explained. My limbs felt like I had ran a few miles and my body was covered in sweat but that was a normal work out session for me. Maybe he normally tested the weaker demons, and they thought I was going to be one of them. “How long did that take?” I asked him.
“That was the fastest I have ever done tested someone. Your power showed after two minutes but I let it run for about five. It was crazy but everything went smooth.” He seemed almost giddy with that result.
With the way he was smiling and rubbing his hands together he was giving out psycho scientist vibes and I was starting to question this demon. I wanted to be done to get out of here before he turned all crazy killer on me. I needed the chance to figure out my powers, gosh darn it.
“What next?” I asked taking back my seat.
“Now we wait for the results before sending out an email to the dean and have Zion take you to the orientation.” He was acting a bit too happy and we didn’t even have the answers yet.
“Ok, so can you tell me a bit about the council and the school?” I asked, figuring this was a good distraction.
“The council is in charge here in purgatory and is made up of about twelve different people. I actually have a few books I am going to add to your list of requirements so you can read everything you need to know before throwing you in the deep end.” He smiled like he was doing me a favor. “So supernatural wise we have at least one of each species here except any that are fae. The fae cannot live here since they need some kind of living nature and actual sunlight to keep living. The most common species you will find here are demons, shifters of varies kinds, vampires, witches, and some ghosts.” The computer dinged cutting off the rest of his answer.
“So did I pass with flying colors?” I joked nervously.
“Holy shit.” He gaped at me in surprise. “You’re an elite which means top of the power tower but your blood results didn’t give us an answer.”
“Oh.” I had really wanted to know who my parents were. “When will we have an answer on my parents? And how would we get in touch with them?”
“I will have to run a few more tests. I will get back to you with both of those answers. I know this is something important to you just as it is to us.” He started mumbling to himself and turned back to his computer. “I’ll let you know. Hurry and make it to orientation. Bye now.” He never looked back at me.
Zion must have heard what was going on because he opened the door and held it open for me. “How did she do, sir?”
He didn’t answer. He didn’t even turn to look at us. He just kept mumbling things to himself so I rushed out the door pulling Zion with me.
“What a wierdo.” I whispered. Zion nodded and directed me in the right direction.
