“So you were the ones who set up those traps?” she asked in a darker tone and the people in front of her held their rods tighter against her.
“D-Don’t get any closer!” one of the boys bravely shouted.
Seeing the kids around 14 and 15 taking up their crooked rods against her, Liliech could only grin. No one had dared use such mean to threaten her, not one bit!
“Are you the ones who made those traps?” she asked again, hand clenched as she usually does when she was about to take someone off. She was all-smile but her eyes were already expressing a murderous aura that made the kids flinch in fear and involuntarily take a step back.
But Eliot was braver among them and asked back, “Yes we are, and who are you? Why did you trespass our place?” Eliot asked
“As far as I knew, you had no name on this place.” Liliech replied and the boy Eliot seemed to have angered more and gritted his teeth as he replied, “It’s ours.”
Liliech grinned and started cracking her fingers, “Kids shouldn’t do such a thing to a poor old lady like me.”
“Who are you even calling old lady, witch!” one of them shouted, already trembling seeing how leisure Liliech is, but it tinged on the witch’s ears and glared at him.
“Do you really fear witches?” with her words, everything seemed to have gone dim, the wind bought chills as the trees seemed to have creaked, bending towards them to take a look. The kids felt this sudden aura and trembled even more.
But Eliot stood firm and exclaimed, “You’re a witch.” he held his rod higher against her.
Liliech smirked and stepped forward, but her foot didn’t land on something solid. She just then found herself falling into another trap.
Just a step forward was a pit concealed in dried leaves and the moment Liliech took her step forward, her whole person immediately fell and head-on, she landed on the ground below. Seeing her fall, the kids screamed in joy, they had just dug the pit recently and it was the first that someone fell on it.
One of the boys who kept calling Liliech as witch peeked at her, “What are you gonna do now witch?!” he shouted. The pit wasn’t that deep, it was just enough for a person not to climb upward.
Liliech was completely humiliated than ever. She fell into another trap without sensing it, even her reflexes failed her. She punched the soil that trapped her in, the hell this body!
“Getting insane now ey?” the boy was named Pat. Liliech lifted her head just to see the kids peeking at her in curiosity and wariness. Their faces were young, even the way they held their rods was clumsy.
“Get me out of here children,” Liliech commanded
It was Pat who answered, “Ha! Who are you calling children?!”
“Stop it, Pat. You’re so noisy.” one of the girl said, “My name is Hannah, who are you?”
Liliech smiled at her, “A witch.” she answered.
It was Pat who reacted immediately and yelled, “Told you she is!” but Hannah along with Eliot didn’t make any response instead, they eyed Liliech attentively. Observing her good features.
She was too elegant to be called a witch.
“The area is currently disturbed. We are on high alert and had created several traps in case of invasion.” It was Eliot who finally spoke with sense.
Liliech twitched, “Traps? You call these traps?”
Eliot seemed to have hit from her statement since everyone else silenced down but he buried the awkward atmosphere with a question, “We only knew one witch in the west and that is the dark, man-eating witch living right deep in this forest.”
And it was Liliech turn to shut up, man-eating witch?!
“And because you’re obviously lying, we are sorry to say that you must remain there for a moment, We need to assess you carefully for security.” he continued.
“So you’re keeping me here?” Liliech called in contempt.
“For the meantime,” Eliot answered but their head suddenly flinched in one direction when they heard something in the distant, even Liliech who was in the body of the Luna flinched towards the direction where she heard the sound.
Her hair stood hearing the familiar creepy howl just miles away from them. She knew that deep and fearful howl that reached every part of the woods and it has been a long time since she didn’t hear it.
“Eliot,” Hannah called seriously, tightening their hold on the rod. The boy seemed to have shown fear by his stern expression but hid it in his loud voice, “It’s on again.”
“Damn that witch, she tests us out and it’s nearer than before!” Pat called out, “Should we just wait for older ones?!”
Eliot answered, “No,” stepping forward toward the direction of that distant howl as if signaling that it was there, coming for them. “We must do our job. Several men from our pack were already injured, we can no longer rely on them.”
Tension seemed to have occurred within the group as they stared at each other, doubting his suggestion.
“Easy to say than done. We can’t just get that thing out of here with these rods.” one of the boys called out and several of them agreed, with their tiny hands and weak bodies, how could they oppress such a thing?!
“Then what do you want? Die while waiting?” it was Hanna who blurted out.
“Then should we face it head-on?!” one of the boys asked back in anger. They were all tensed and slightly trembling as if that howl was something they feared, and Liliech knew it well.
They were just kids, how can they face that thing she couldn’t help frowning, that thing should be locked up in one of her dungeons.
“Hey kids,” she called but none took heed, several of them were arguing against each other about whether they should just run and call for help or remain to face that thing out there but the fear on their faces didn’t disappear.
“We can’t defeat that thing!”
“It’s better to die than have your mucus cry for help!”
