Her Decision

The sound of an alarm ringing loudly jostled me out of dreamless sleep. I turned to my side and turned the alarm off as I stretched my body yawning. I looked over my shoulder and smiled at the sight of Louisa snoring loudly. She was a heavy sleeper. Even if there was a tsunami, Lou would not wake up. “Lou wake up,” I said as I tapped my sleeping friend who just turned to the other side to continue her sleep. Smiling mischievously, I thought of an idea. I got up from the bed and headed to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and brought out a bottle of water. Walking back to my room, I uncapped the bottle and poured some drops of cold water into Lou's ears. Lou immediately sprang up and gasped much to my amusement. “Good morning to you too,” I said laughing at her reaction. “Watch your back,” Lou said as she narrowed her eyes at me. “Yeah, yeah. Go get ready for work. I'll make us breakfast,” I said as I walked back to the kitchen. I took out some pans and began to prepare some pancakes. My nerves were all over the place as she thought of how Carlos was going to react to her pregnancy. He barely knew me and now I was going to show up with a three-month pregnancy. Would he recognize me? Will he accept this pregnancy? All these thoughts were going through my head that I didn't realize that the pancakes were burning until the fire alarm came on. “Angela! What are you thinking? The pancakes are burning,” Lou exclaimed as she rushed to the kitchen still wrapped in her towel. “Sorry, I got a bit distracted," I replied trying to clean up the mess. Louisa quickly turned off the fire alarm and looked at me. “Forget breakfast. We will get something on our way out. Go take a shower and get ready,” I just nodded and headed for the bathroom. The feel of the hot water on my skin eased my tense muscles a bit as I sighed and wished I could remain in there forever. Stepping out of the shower, I dried my body with my towel and opened my wardrobe as I figured out what to wear. I was trying to impress anyone, I was already knocked up. I opted for some causal jeans and an old band tee shirt. Lou came into her room and eyed me from head to toe. “Hell no, you are not wearing that,” she said as she walked towards my wardrobe. “What's wrong with my outfit?” I asked. “First of all, you look like a high school student and I don't mean it as a compliment. Secondly, I have told you severally that you need to show off those curves,” Lou replied as she searched through my wardrobe. “Here, wear this instead,” Lou said as she handed me a pink two-piece trouser outfit. “This outfit appreciates your curves truly well. Now hurry up, I can't be late for work,” Lou said as she headed for the door. I sighed in defeat and changed out of my old clothes and into the two-piece Lou had selected for me. Walking towards the mirror, I tied my hair in a low bun. I didn't really feel like applying any makeup today so I applied just lipgloss and put on some flat shoes. Satisfied with how I looked, I put on some perfume and headed for the living room with her handbag to wait for Lou. “Ready?” Lou said as she stepped into the living room wearing a black pantsuit with her blonde hair flowing over her shoulders. She always looked beautiful in whatever she wore. She had this beautiful slim build that models would kill for. I on the other hand had these curves that made me look fat, with my wide hips and little stomach pouch. “Yeah, let's go,” I replied as we made our way to the front door. After we left our apartment, we flagged down a taxi. “Good morning ladies, where to?” said the taxi driver. “Morning. Marcello Group of companies please,” Lou replied. “Of course,” We got into the cab. I was restless throughout the journey and I kept tapping my foot as I rested my head on the window as I watched different buildings go by. “We’re here,” the taxi driver announced as we got off the cab. Lou dipped her hand into her handbag brought out a $10 bill and handed it to him and he drove away. I looked up at the skyscraper in front of me, totally in awe. At the top of it was the logo of the Marcello Group. Okay, this was it, I thought to myself. “Come on, let's go in,” Lou said to me as she led the way into the building. I followed her to the receptionist's desk and watched as she organized her desk. “So what now?” I asked Lou. “The boss comes to work before everyone so I'm pretty sure he's in his office. Listen to me Angela, his office is on the 20th floor so you have to take that lift to get to his office,” Lou said and pointed towards the lift. “If anyone asks you, tell them you have an appointment with him. Okay?” I nodded nervously and made my way to the lift with my heart thumping loudly in my chest. I got into the lift and much to my relief, I was the only one in it. I pressed the buttons to lead me to the 20th floor. As the lift was going up, I started panicking. What am I going to say? I thought to myself. God! Help me. I reached the 20th floor and the elevator dinged. On getting out, I spotted a door right ahead that said, “Office of the CEO,” I quickly swallowed and walked slowly toward the door. I knocked on the door but it was already open. There was a lady in her 30s probably tapping away on her laptop and she chewed her gum as if she had no care in the world. “Hello, good morning. I am here to see Mr Carlos Marcello,” I said nervously. The lady eyed me from head to toe before answering me rudely. “And you are?” “Oh, umm my name is Angela but I'm not sure he would know that,” I said as I laughed awkwardly. “So if he doesn't know your name, what business do you have with him?” the lady asked rudely. “Umm, I think I'll just speak to him directly," I replied. “Oh no girlie, I am the personal assistant to Mr Marcello and you can't get to him without telling me the reason you're here,” she said. “Okay, um I'm kinda pregnant with his child, and I just thought he should know,” I replied. I wish the ground would just open up and swallow me. The lady gasped loudly and looked at me in disgust as though I was filth. “Great, another gold digger,” she said under her breath. “Wait here,” The lady got up and knocked on the door behind her which I guessed was the CEO's actual office. “Come in,” I heard from inside. That voice made me weak in the knees. It was truly him. Okay. Now I was really nervous. What was going to say to me? I wrapped a protective arm around my belly already feeling protective of the life growing inside of me. The lady went in and after a few minutes, I heard Carlos shouting. “What? Send her out of here. Every lady I sleep with claims to be pregnant for me and I can't take it anymore. I don't know any Angela. Throw her out right now else you'll lose your job. She is nothing but a gold digger,” My eyes watered as I heard his words. He was the first person I had ever slept with. I didn't even know him before sleeping with him and now he refers to me as a gold digger. I wasn't surprised at his actions but the least he could do was ask to see me and let me explain. “If she's not out within the next two minutes, you can call security to drag her out like that piece of filth she is,” he added. I couldn't take it anymore and I ran out of the office in tears vowing never to return to this place. I will make sure that my child never longs for its father. I am going to raise my child alone.
