Chapter 2

Jason dropped me off three houses away and I made my way to the house. I looked at the large red bricked house I called home. It was the second biggest house in Vermont but to me it was just a mini prison. I walked past the electric gate, up the short driveway to the house. The door was unlocked, of course no one locked their door in Vermont, and no one ever got robbed in Upper Vermont. I kicked off my shoes and placed them in the closet in the foyer, the plush carpet tickling my feet. As usual the house was quiet; I made my way up the stairs to my room. Halfway across the hall, a door opened and a head poked out. “Hello mum” I uttered fixing my blonde hair to hide my neck. “Good.” She sniffed “And for God’s sake fixes that slouch!!!” I straightened my posture watching as she muttered about the money she wasted sending me to finishing school. “Sorry” I murmured, she made a face, waving me away, closing the door to the room behind her. I sighed and made my way to my room, shutting the door with a soft click. My room was a pastel blue with large white windows overlooking the backyard, a door led to my bathroom with a connecting door to my closet. I had a few fairy lights pinned all around my room with a bunch of memorabilia I had gotten across the years. Apart from that, I had nothing on the walls to personalize my room, mother forbade it and it was easier to go by her rules than to incur her wrath. I dumped my bag on my beanbag, making my way to my bed and falling face first onto it. I rolled over and stared at the ceiling, my mind far away. I sat up and frowned when I caught a whiff of Jason’s scent, sniffing my clothes, I smiled realizing I smelt like him, and I loved when that happened. I hummed grabbing my phone and checking my socials. I guess I was more tired than I expected because I ended up falling asleep. A hand shaking me woke me up; I peered through my lashes and saw Annette, one of the maids standing over me. I sat up, yawning and stretching. “It’s time for dinner.” She informed. I nodded thanking her, she smiled before leaving. I decided to change into cotton shorts and a tank top with a cardigan before heading out. I could hear my parents discussing as I made my way to the dining area. I slid into my chair, apart from a nod from my father; I didn’t get any sort of acknowledgement. I was served dinner and I ate in silent, listening to them talk about their day and how father’s banking business was going. Father owned the town’s bank which had several branches all around the country, by proxy he also owned or had a percentage of ownership of several businesses in the town. The townsfolk always claimed The O’Malley’s owned Vermont, my parents never confirmed or denied the statement but they basked in the fact that people knew how important they were. “… Dames of all people.” My father mocked, my attention came crashing back to the table. Why was my father talking about The Dames? Oh dear God, did they find out about my relationship?! “Does he honestly think you are stupid enough to loan him money? He would probably spend it gambling.” Mother replied. “Those Dames are no good people, not the father, not the mother, not the son.” I stared at her as she belittled them, my appetite vanishing with her every word. “It’s a pity, a son like that with useless parents, such a hopeless future.” Father tutted. I dropped my fork and it made a clattering sound against the ceramic plate. I paled looking up at my parents who had stopped their conversation to stare at me, father with a look of mild concern and mother with a look of irritation. “I’m sorry, I don’t feel like eating and I’m a bit sleepy. I’ll turn in early tonight. Good night.” I whispered. They nodded biding me a good night, I made my way to my room, shutting the door behind me and leaning against it. I wiped away the stray tear, shrugging off my cardigan and flicking off the light. I got into bed, under the covers, hugging my pillow to my body as the tears came back. It wasn’t fair, Jason was a good person, and he didn’t deserve to have shitty parents who didn’t care about him. He was kind, he was hardworking, and he deserved everything good in this life. I had no idea how long I laid curled in bed, unable to sleep, my heart heavy at the thought of a sad future for Jason and the uncertain future we both had. I couldn’t take it any longer, not knowing what possessed me, and I pulled on my cardigan and a pair of sweatpants. I popped the window opened and climbed down the rails, I tiptoed to the garage, and luckily it was opened so I didn’t need to go back inside the house. I pushed it up the path, wincing and wishing I had slipped on a pair of slippers but I wasn’t about to go back. I needed to see Jason. I opened the gates quietly and climbed onto my bicycle, it was late at night but I pedaled the 30 minutes to Lower Vermont where Jason lived. I got to the house, it was a bungalow which had seen better days, and Jason’s truck was parked near his father’s beat up station wagon. They had no gate and a part of the fence was broken, I leaned my bicycle against the fence and hopped through the broken part, crouching until I reached Jason’s bedroom window. I spied a stone and picked it up about to tap on the window when I paused, contemplating whether he was awake or not but I had come this far, I couldn’t just leave, but he looked really tired at school. Sighing, I realized it was going to be really selfish of me to wake him up. I turned around to leave when a stray cat yowling had me shrieking. I slapped a hand over my mouth in horror realizing I was about to get caught. The neighbors’ lights came on and I started to freak out knowing if they came out they would surely see me because of how low the fence was. A creak of a window opening had me spinning around; I came face to face with a confused and sleepy looking Jason. His eyes widened at the sight of me before glancing at the neighbor’s house, we could hear voices. He immediately leaned across the window ledge and pulled me by my waist into his room, I gasped and he shushed me, hurriedly closing the window and curtains. We waited in the darkness for a couple of minutes before he pulled me closer to the bed. “Are you okay?” He asked flicking his lights on, checking me for injuries. I nodded “Yeah, I was just a bit frightened.” He let out a sigh of relief before fixing me with a pointed look. “Now tell me what the hell you are doing in this part of town at this hour of the night?” He whispered harshly. I looked down, playing with the loose thread of my cardigan. “My parents… I couldn’t sleep. I just needed to see you.” I answered looking up at him. His glare softened and he groaned pulling me into his arms. My head resting against his bare chest, fingers playing with the band of his sweatpants. “Why didn’t you call me?” He asked “I would have come to you in a heartbeat.” I shrugged, he sighed shaking his head. “What am I going to do with you?” “Love me.” I replied sheepishly. He smiled softly kissing my lips “Always.” I hummed into the kissing, standing on my tippy toes and wrapping my arms around his neck. His hands moved to my thighs, just as he was about to lift me up, my stomach let out a loud gurgle, completely disrupting the mood. I giggled breaking the kiss, he chuckled softly. “Hungry?” He asked swaying me slightly, I nodded. He let me go and I sat on his bed, watching as he grabbed his keys and shrugged on a wife beater and a hoodie. “Come on, how does a bagel sandwich sound?” he asked stretching out his hand. “Amazing” I replied grabbing his hand and letting him pull me to him. We sneaked out of his house and he opened the truck and I got in. “Wait a minute, how did you get here?” He asked. “Bicycle.” I replied biting my lip when he shot me a glare. “Are you asking to get mugged?!!” He didn’t let me answer and I watched as he went to get my bicycle before loading it into the bed of his trunk. He got in and started the engine, apparently not caring if he woke half the neighborhood. He revved for extra measure before pulling out of the driveway. We stopped at the gas station where the convenient store was still opened. “Let’s go.” He said, I opened the door and skipped ahead of him, pushing the door to the convenient store open, I smiled at the old lady, Gladys. She smiled back, her grin widening at the sight of Jason. She always proclaimed that Jason and I reminded her of her high school sweetheart. Jason got the drinks while I got the bagel sandwiches and a bag of chips. He paid and Gladys gladly bagged it, handing it over to Jason. I walked ahead of him to the car. “Anna, where are your shoes?” He asked. I froze, turning around and shooting him a guilty smile. “I… kind of forgot to wear them.” I replied sheepishly. He raised a brow before chucking off his crocs. I walked back to him and wore them, leaving him with socks only. We walked to the truck and got into the back. My legs on his thighs as we ate our late night snack. ************************ He parked his truck in the same place as he did before, I stepped out of the cabin and watched as he unloaded my bicycle and pushed it with me walking beside him. We reached my house and he helped me place it in the garage. “Thank you for everything.” I whispered as we stood underneath my bedroom window. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.” He whispered back. I leaned up and kissed him, he responded before pulling away. “I’ll text you.” “Okay. Goodnight.” “Night.” He replied. I climbed back up the window under his watchful gaze; he smiled up at me before walking off. I watched him till he disappeared round the corner. Yawning, I shrugged off the sweatpants and cardigan before clambering up the bed; I was out as soon as my head touched the pillow.
