“I’ll see you later then.” I whispered taking a step back; I immediately wanted to wrap myself back in his arms. He smiled and I realized this was the second time I was seeing him in his work clothes and Lord did he look good. He had the blue overalls worn halfway; the rest was tied at his waist, his stained black wife beater on display. His muscles smudged from the different oils he had come in contact with.
“You might want to wipe the drool off Princess.” He pointed out smirking. I snapped my mouth shut, scowling at him as the blush took over my entire face. I walked away, his laugher following me to the entrance. I turned around and he flashed me a smile, I waved at him and he sent me a two finger salute before heading back to his truck.
My heart felt like it was on cloud 9; it was amazing and unbelievable how Jason could make me feel like the happiest woman on earth. I walked back to Janice’s car and got in.
“From the smile on your face I guess he’s alright.” She commented, I looked over at her and nodded.
“Yeah, he’s fine; he’s coming over later so we’ll talk more then.” I explained. “We both know he’s not coming over to ‘talk’” she murmured emphasizing on the word ‘talk’. I rolled my eyes at her. She drove us back to Upper Vermont, parking near the gates to my house.
“Thanks Janice.” I said pulling her into a hug, I could feel my eyes tearing up, I didn’t want to imagine what my day would have gone like without her or what my life would have been like, the thought itself was nightmare inducing.
“Awwn Anna, you’re going to make me cry.” She whispered sniffing back tears. I pulled back laughing as I wiped the tears away, she wiped hers, a laugh escaping her lips.
“Look at us, crying like those girls in the movies.” She cried out, a smile on her face. “I’m blaming this on my upcoming period.”
I giggled at her words “But seriously, thank you Janice.” I whispered. She patted my hand “You’re my best friend, heck, you’re more of a sister. I’ll always be there for you.”
We hugged each other again and I got out of the car, watching her drive away before unlocking the gate and walking up the driveway to the house. The door was opened, frowning I walked in to see travelling boxes stacked near the door.
“There you are.” Mother’s voice came from the stairs; I looked up to see her dressed in a dark blue knee length gown, looking put together as always. She walked well, more like glided down the stairs, coming to stand in front of me.
“Hector, she’s back.” She called turning to look at me, frowning when she noticed the tears in my eyes.
“What’s wrong with you?” She inquired softly, Mother was mostly formal with me, I never felt a connection with her but there were times when she dropped the cold exterior and showed me her caring side, it wasn’t a lot and whenever she did, it jarred me, this time was no exception. I blinked trying to form the words in my brain while she stood there, looking at me with an expectant look on her face.
“I… Janice, just girls stuff.” I mumbled she raised a brow at my explanation before making a noise at the back of her throat. Stepping back just as father walked in from the hall that led to his study and just like that, the cold exterior was back.
“We are heading out of town for a meeting; we shall be back on Saturday. Siobhan is in charge, there is enough money on your credit card if you need anything.” He instructed. I nodded as he gave further instructions before Mother gave me the usual per functionary kiss on the cheek. Siobhan and Mary with the help of Adolfo placed the boxes into the trunk of the car and I stood by door as Mother and Father got in. I watched the car drive down the driveway to the gates until it disappeared out of sight.
I walked back into the house, closing the door behind me and letting out a sigh. It was almost as if they had left with the oppressive feel that enveloped the house. I made my way to the kitchen where Siobhan was chopping some veggies. I sat on one of the stool near the kitchen island, swiveling the chair around to face her.
“Hello Siobhan” I greeted smiling. “Hello young miss.” She replied, expertly dicing a carrot, a smile on her lips. Siobhan was a 55 year old woman who worked for our family for as long as I could remember. What I lacked in maternal love from my mother, I got from Siobhan.
“Anna, Siobhan. Mother is not here to turn you into stone for calling me by my name.” I pointed out picking a carrot stick from the pile and munching on it. “Very well Anna.” She conceded smiling when I took another stick.
“Who would have thought Anna would come to love veggies?” she mused making me laugh.
“How bad was my hate for veggies?” I asked picking another stick, I never got to hear about my childhood, mother was not the nostalgic type and father simply did not have the time so whenever Siobhan brought up my childhood, I soaked it up.
“Oh Lord, it was terrible.” She answered laughing, “And you were so smart, none of our tricks could work on you. If you did not want to eat that carrot stick or those peas, no one in the world was going to make you. I can still remember an incident where you snuck into the kitchen and threw away a whole box of imported peas your mother had gotten from France just because you had overheard us talking about making pea soup the next day. Your mother almost blew a gasket.” She recounted. I couldn’t help the smile that took over my lips as I gazed at her; her eyes had glazed over, lost in the memories.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Well, we still had pea soup, not French peas and you got grounded for a month.” She replied laughing wiping a stray tear. “Those were the golden days. You were such a rambunctious child, always keeping us on our feet.”
I smiled wistfully, my eyes moving to the cookie cutter on the counter, an idea popped into my head.
“Siobhan” I called out.
“Yes dearie.” She answered looking up from the bell pepper she was now slicing. “Can we please make cookies?” I asked a small smile on my lips. She narrowed her eyes at me.
“And spoil your dinner, I think not!!!”
I groaned, pouting. “Please Siobhan, I can’t remember the last time we baked anything in this house. I miss the smell of homemade cookies.” I pleaded.
“I promise to clean up, I’ll eat dinner too, and we can have them for dessert.” I continued. She sighed placing the knife down.
“Fine, but the only reason I am agreeing to this is because we haven’t baked in a while.” She conceded with a warm smile. “Only after dinner, now go rest, I’ll have Mary call you down for dinner.”
I leaned over the island and planted a kiss on her cheek “You are the best Siobhan!!!” with that I snatched more carrot sticks and ran out of the kitchen to my room.
Tossing my bag on my bed, I walked to my closet and changed into something comfortable, consisting of a pair of cotton shorts and a shirt that was clearly not mine. I pressed the cloth to my nose and sighed happily at the scent of Jason. Pulling the curtains closed, the room darkened. I made myself comfortable in my reading nook, flicking my lamp on and grabbing the Poetry book Jason got me.
“Fine lines by Isabelle Marie Alexander” I whispered, I leaned back and got myself lost in the world of poetry. A knock on my door jolted me awake; I rubbed my eyes and sat up. It was then that I realized I had fallen asleep.
“Come in” I called out getting up from the nook.
“Why is it so dark in here?” Mary asked flicking the lights on, I winced as the harsh lights assaulted my eyes.
“I was reading then I fell asleep.” I explained to her, stifling a yawn. She smiled nodding. “Alright then, dinner’s ready.” She said. I perked up at that, not because I was hungry but because of the cookies Siobhan and I were going to bake afterwards.
“I’ll be down in a sec” I replied, she left the room, closing the door gently behind her. I walked to my bathroom and brushed my teeth before heading downstairs, the smell of potatoes and veggies wafting to my nose. My mouth watered as my stomach growled. I guess I was hungry after all. Since I was the only one present, I decided to have dinner with Siobhan and Mary in the kitchen.
“How was school?” Mary asked as Siobhan placed a plate of steamed potatoes in front of me.
Very interesting.
“It was okay, just had classes. Nothing to really talk about.” I replied taking a bite of the potato, humming as it smelted in my mouth.
“This is really good.” I complimented taking another bite with the veggies this time around. “Thank you” Siobhan replied smiling, she sat opposite me and tucked into her food.
“What kind of cookies do you want us to bake?” She asked. I squinted my eyes, before grinning.
“Chocolate chips, we can never go wrong with a classic.” I pointed out, besides they were Jason and I’s favourite.
“Good choice.” Mary added nodding her head in agreement. The rest of dinner was filled with small talk, soon Mary donned her coat on and bade us a goodnight. I placed my dish in the sink and turned to Siobhan, giddy with anticipation.
“Alright, let’s get started then.” She said clapping her hand. I helped her get the ingredients from the pantry and she brought out her old cook book which had recipes shared between her grandmother and her.
“First off Preheat the oven” She instructed, I did as she said. “Done”
“Good, now you handle steps 1 to 3 while I handle steps 4, 5 and 6.” She suggested. “Okay” I replied. We got to work and before we knew it the entire kitchen smelt like chocolate. I hummed watching as Siobhan combined the contents of my bowl with hers.
“Perfect” she whispered. “Can we add more chocolate chips?” I piped holding the bag up, she smiled before nodding. I happily poured more and watched her fold it in. I sat and tossed a few chips into my mouth munching on it before joining her in rolling them into balls and placing them on the baking trays.
“Pop them into the oven.” She instructed, I slipped on the gloves and slid them into the oven. “Now we wait.”
I helped her clean up as the scent of chocolate and cookies filled the kitchen, I brought out a carton of milk from the fridge and two glasses. 10 minutes later, the timer dinged and Siobhan pulled them out of the oven, placing them on the cooling rack.
“They look so pretty” I cooed at the way they came out looking so perfect. I poured a glass of milk in anticipation waiting for them to cool down.
“You can have one now” Siobhan said laughing at my eagerness. I smiled taking one from the rack and biting into it. I hummed as the warm chocolate filled my mouth.
“This is so gooood” I moaned taking another bite, washing it down with the milk. “It is” She agreed tasting the cookies. “Alright then, off to bed with you.” She shooed me. I laughed watching as she placed some on a plate and handed it over to me. I drank the rest of my milk, rinsing the cup.
“Thanks Siobhan. Good night.” I called, making my way out of the kitchen, up the stairs to my room. I closed the door behind me and clicked the lock in place. I kept the plate on the bedside drawer, taking one with me as I walked across the room to unlock my window, pushing it open.
I settled on my bed and resumed my reading while I munched on my cookies, keeping in mind to leave some for Jason.
Halfway through my reading, I glanced at the time wondering if he was still coming, it was almost midnight. Sighing I decided to get ready for bed, walking to my bathroom and doing my nightly routine, before shrugging off his shirt and changing into another one, wearing nothing but my underwear underneath it. I walked out brushing my hair when I heard a soft ‘damn’. Spinning around I gasped, placing a hand on my chest.
“You scared me.” I whispered staring at Jason who was lying on my bed, eating a chocolate chip cookie.
“Sorry princess” he apologized, he did not look apologetic in anyway. His eyes drank me in; he slowly got up from the bed and approached me. He was in a dark tee and jeans trousers with a hoodie, his hair wasn’t in a bun today, and instead it was loose, coming to a stop past his shoulder.
“I was wondering where this shirt was.” He whispered tugging on the material, pulling me closer. I smiled sheepishly standing on my toes and wrapping my arms around his neck. He easily cupped my thighs and lifted me up, I wrapped my legs around his waist and he walked us to my bed, sitting.
“Hey.” I whispered playing with his hair.
“Hi” he whispered back, leaning over to kiss my lips. I kissed him back tasting the chocolate on his lips and tongue. His hand moved from my thighs, up to my waist, underneath the shirt to my chest. I pulled back from the kiss and he used the opportunity to trail kisses down my neck till he reached my sweet spot.
“J..Jason, we need to talk.” I moaned. “It can wait.” He murmured, palming one of the breasts. “No, it can’t. We have to do something about Derek.” I gasped when he bit down on the base of my neck; he placed a soft kiss there before gently blowing on the area making me shiver.
“Fine.” He said pulling away from my neck; his hand was still under the shirt. I gave him a pointed look and he gave me one back, sighing, I pulled his hand out, placing it on the bed.
“You’re mean.” he pouted. “What happened when you got to school after dropping me in the alleyway?” I inquired. He groaned lying down with me still straddling him. His fingers played with the frills of my underwear.
“Principal Cutler told me to take the rest of the day off, something about cooling my head off.” He answered. I frowned shocked at his answer.
“How?! I mean, I thought he would be jumping at the opportunity of punishing you?”
He shrugged, moving his hands to my waist, his thumbs rubbing the soft skin of my tummy. “Beats me, I’m not worried Princess. Derek can’t do s**t, I can handle him. Stop worrying your head over it.” He assured.
“You don’t get it, Jason. Derek can ruin us, I don’t know what he has against us but we can’t let it get out.” I reiterated. He sighed rolling us over making me squeak.
“Listen Princess, Derek cannot and will not ruin us. I won’t let him. Remember it’s me and you till the end.” He said, his eyes piercing into mine. I nodded looking up at him.
“You and I, till the end.” I whispered back.
“Yes.”
“Stay the night?” I asked.
“You don’t have to ask Princess.”
