Jane’s POV
I couldn't look up at Alpha Jason as he spoke those hurtful words. I was glad that baby Hilda was already sleeping before he came in. I was afraid that Alpha Jason was going to traumatize Hilda at the rate he was going so I always did my best to keep her away from him.
I was crying profusely by the time Alpha Jason closed the door. I slumped to the floor as the tears cascaded slowly down my face. Alpha Jason hated me yet he wouldn't let me go.
The door of the nursery opened again, and I quickly got up from the floor, thinking that it was Alpha Jason who had returned. I cried more in relief when I saw that it was Stephanie, the mate of Alpha Jason's best friend.
‘My goodness. Jane. What happened?’ Stephanie said as she rushed to my side and I stumbled and ended into her hands. I let go of my hold on my emotions and let the tears come in torrents.
Stephanie was a friend to Luna Hilda before she died, she was also mated to General Leo who was Alpha Jason’s best friend.
‘Why does he hate me this much? Why can't he just at least tolerate me?’ I asked as I hiccup.
‘It is okay Jane. Stop crying,’ Stephanie said then led me to the chair. She made me sit then she sat beside me.
‘Is something wrong with me? Am I such a hateful person?’ I asked Stephanie.
‘You are a lovely person Jane. You do not deserve the way he is treating you,’ Stephanie answered.
‘Luna Hilda should have known that Alpha Jason has a black and cold heart. She should have known better than to bequeath me to a man who is not capable of love. A man who can't even look at his own child,’ I said crying.
‘Luna Hilda knew that you would make a good Luna that was why she insisted that Alpha Jason should make you his Luna. She also knew you would be a good mother that was why she gave baby Hilda to you.’
‘To be a good Luna, I need an Alpha. Alpha Jason hates the idea of my existence. I will be glad if he will just change his mind and take another female as his Luna,' I said wiping the tears off my face as the tears had subsided.
‘You underestimate the level of love that Alpha Jason had for Luna Hilda if you think he will do away with you. He will never do away with you because he will not want to go against Luna Hilda’s last wish. Wipe your tears and cheer up Jane. Everything will be fine,’ Stephanie said smiling.
‘I doubt that,’ I said folding my hands on my chest.
‘Wait until you become Luna in the next few weeks, then I will show you the best way to a man's heart,’ Stephanie said, winking at me.
‘You can only enter a heart that has a door and is not made out of cold stone,' I said hissing loudly.
Stephanie laughed and pulled my cheek playfully ‘Wait until then. We will then find out if his heart has a door or not.’
‘Thank you, ma'am. I feel better now,’ I said to Stephanie.
‘I have told you several times to not call me ma'am. You are going to become my Luna in a few weeks. Irrespective of the age difference, you are my superior. So stop with the ‘ma'am’ thing already,’ Stephanie said and I nodded.
She left later after she had talked to me extensively about being patient with Alpha Jason. We also discussed some other things about baby Hilda.
After Stephanie left, I felt so restless and I decided to go for a walk. I wished I had my wolf already so that I could shift and run around the bushes behind Alpha Jason's house.
‘Annette. Please can you keep an eye on Hilda, I want to go for a walk.’ I called on one of the Omega girls as I entered the kitchen.
‘The Alpha said you are not allowed to go anywhere, and any of us who allows you to go will be punished for it,’ Annette said worriedly.
‘I am an adult Annette. Besides, I am not going far. I am going behind the house. I just need to clear my head,’ I said.
‘Ok. But please, you need to return before the Alpha does,’ Annette said, and I nodded.
I didn't know that he was not in the house. He must have left after slicing me into two with his tongue.
I went outside through the back door. I walked into the bush and sat on a stump. A lot was going through my mind. I was thinking of how best to run away without involving anyone. I thought of running away after I got my wolf, before the Luna's rite could be done but then I thought of baby Hilda and thought it would be selfish of me to leave her behind and it would not be wise either for me to take her with me when I didn't know where I would be going or where my meals would be coming from.
I absent-mindedly stood up from the stump and wandered further into the bush. I suddenly came to consciousness and discovered that I had stayed too far away from the house.
The sound of the trumpet sounded in the distance and I shivered. It was a trumpet that never sounded, except a rogue was sighted around the pack or in a neighboring pack. It was a warning to be on guard. I had not heard that sound in three years.
I quickly started retracing my steps back to the house. I froze when the bush in front of me started moving. I knew at that moment that I wasn't alone. I started walking backwards but my mind was too frozen to give command to my legs to run.
A black wolf with wicked black eyes emerged from the bushes and growled at me, menacingly baring his teeth.
‘Please don't kill me I am innocent. I have never done anything wrong. Please don't kill me,’ I said again, walking backward away from the wolf.
From its stench, I knew it was a rogue and the whole pack of soldiers must be after him at that moment, but I didn't know how long it would take them to get there.
While trying to escape from the rogue while walking backward, I fell and screamed. This seemed to infuriate the wolf and it lurched for me. I closed my eyes, waiting for the pain, but it never came.
I heard a bone crash against the bone with a loud bang. I opened my eyes as someone helped me up. The wolf that had attacked me was held down by another wolf which I recognized as Beta Shane's wolf. A much bigger wolf emerged from behind Beta Shane's wolf. I shivered as I recognized it as Alpha Jason's wolf. I was in trouble!
Alpha Jason's wolf nudged Beta Shane's wolf off the rogue. He did it lightly and Beta Shane let go of the rogue. The rogue quickly sprang to his feet and launched at Alpha Jason. Alpha Jason stepped out of the way as the rogue charged then sank his teeth into its hind leg and tore a large chunk of meat out before letting go of the rogue.
The rogue growled in pain but still charged at Alpha Jason. He again stepped out of the way and then sank his teeth into the side of the rogue. It was as if he was taunting the rogue.
When he was done taunting the rogue, he went for the throat and tore it out in one bite. I looked away as his cold eyes bore into mine his teeth sank deeper into the neck of the rogue and his snort became red from the rogue’s blood.
I opened my eyes as someone tapped me on the shoulder. I opened my eyes to see Alpha Jason's wolf in front of me whining.
‘Get on him’ General Leo said to me. He was not in his wolf form.
I quickly did as he said and got on Alpha Jason's wolf and held his fur the way I was asked to.
Alpha Jason's wolf started running at a pace I never believed was possible. In the blink of an eye, we were back to the house. The back door opened before we got there. He must have mindlinked someone to open the door.
The moment he got into the house, he shook me off his back and I fell with a loud bang. Before I could process any further thoughts, he shifted and was standing there in his naked glory, looking murderous.
‘What were you doing out there, you fool?’ He barked at me.
‘I was going for a walk. Alpha I am sorry. I got distracted and walked too far away from home,’ I said shivering as I talked.
‘I gave clear instructions for her not to leave the house. Who among you knew she was going and allowed her to go?’ Alpha Jason asked staring the three Omega girls down.
One of the girls pointed at Annette, and blood dried from my brain as Alpha Jason attacked her and held her throat against the wall, then lifted her off her feet.
I screamed and ran towards him. I fell at his feet and held his legs. I didn't know what else to do.
‘Please don't kill her. If you do that, I will never forgive myself. I might just have to kill myself; my conscience would kill me first,' I cried, shaking his legs as much as I could.
He let go of her and she fell with a thud. I quickly left Alpha Jason's legs and ran to Annette. Her eyes were closed but she was still breathing.
‘If anyone should disobey me again, consider yourself dead,’ Alpha Jason said, then stormed upstairs, not minding the fact that he was naked.
I couldn't stop crying as I cradled Annette. Alpha Jason's anger was getting out of hand. He was like a time bomb getting ready to destroy when the time was right. I was beginning to see him as the true danger that he was.
