Overwhelming Scent

Jason’s POV Anger was what I felt each time I set my eyes on Jane. Should I say the moon goddess was wicked enough to take my Hilda away just because Jane came along? Hilda was like a beacon of light in my dark world. Losing my father and mother on the same day was like the end of the world for me. Then I met Hilda during my travels for alliance after I became the Alpha of the pack. Her easy smile had pulled me in instantly, and for the first time since the death of my parents, my poor heart had a reason to beat. All I had lived for since my parents' death was the pack. If I had known what the doctors told Hilda early during the pregnancy, I would have personally seen the abortion of the child. I didn't know that an Omega was not supposed to carry the child of an Alpha. I wasn't told. When I asked the elders in the pack, that is those that were left of them after the m******e, they said they didn't know it could happen that way since no Alpha of the pack had ever taken an Omega for a Luna. Hilda had hidden it from me perfectly. Her beautiful smile had not for one day stopped neither had the light in her eyes gone deem till she breathed her last. My Hilda! I threatened Jane all the time that I would throw her out of the pack, but I could never do it. It was her wish for Jane to become the baby's mother and my Luna as well. I was going to grant that wish but I was never going to love Jane or the baby. I had not held the child in my hand since she was born. I had wished several times that the baby had died and left my Hilda to leave but the moon goddess didn't grant my prayer. I knew that Jane would find out who I was to her the minute she turned eighteen. I wish only for her to hate me so that when she finally finds out she will have no feelings towards me. No one was going to take Hilda's place in my heart. No one! I had every intention of beating the moon goddess in her own game. If she thought she could replace my Hilda with Jane then she must be totally mistaken. There was a knock on my door, and I groaned, thinking that Jane had probably forgotten something and wanted to say it. The knock came the second time and I asked the person to come in with annoyance. ‘I saw Jane flying into the nursery as if someone was after her and from your mood, I guess she was coming from here?’ Shane, my Beta, asked as he came into my office. ‘It is none of your business, Shane,’ I said, then opened a file pretending to be busy. ‘It is my business Alpha. She is going to be my Luna soon, so I should seek after her well-being. Besides, the late Luna instructed me to look after her no matter what,' Shane said, and I looked up at him raising a brow. Every member of the pack knew that Jane was going to be my Luna. They knew that Hilda bequeathed her to me before she died. Hilda made sure a good population of the pack knew that even before she told me. ‘Maybe you should go ahead and mate her then, at least that way, it would be easier for you to look after her,’ I said sarcastically. ‘I will gladly do that Alpha. If only you could give me the go-ahead to do that. Jane is a good girl,' Shane said smiling as if what he said made sense. ‘Do you have a wish to die right now, Shane?’ I asked as the anger that I thought was subsiding began to rise in my chest. ‘I am sorry, but I don't understand Alpha,' Shane said, looking confused. ‘If you dare go near Jane in any way whatsoever, I will wring your neck,’ I said and then looked away from him. ‘I am sorry Alpha. I was just making conversation,’ Shane said contrite. I didn't know when Hilda told Shane to look after Jane but he was doing it wholeheartedly. Sometimes he acts as if he has a crush on her. It annoys me to no end. The worst part of it was the fact that Jane enjoyed that attention and I see the way she smiled at him each time. ‘What brought you here Shane?’ I asked looking up at him. ‘I don't think it would be wise to say it again at this moment,’ Shane said making me frown at him. ‘You came all the way here to tell me something but you won't say it anymore?’ I asked looking at him suspiciously. ‘In this mood, Alpha, I don't think it is advisable to say it,' Shane insisted. ‘Do I need to use my Alpha command on you before you say it?’ ‘That will not be necessary Alpha,' Shane sighed before he continued talking, ‘Jane is turning eighteen in a week or two. The Omegas in the house want to throw her a small party, so they came to me, and I assured them I was going to get permission from you so that we can surprise her,’ Shane explained as if he was in a hurry to finish the explanation. ‘How big is this party going to be?’ I asked. ‘Nothing big. Jane is quite a simple girl, so she would like something very quiet, like a simple birthday cake and a wish from everyone in the house,’ Shane explained. ‘You know that I am beginning to wonder if I am the one Jane was bequeathed to or you. You seem to know her better than I do,' I said and Shane went quiet. ‘I am sorry Alpha. I am just trying to make her feel better,’ Shane apologized. ‘Go and tell everyone that if anybody dares hold a party in my house, I will whip the person to death,’ I said, then returned to my file, but not without seeing the look of shock on Shane's face. Without saying anything else, Shane left my office. I sighed and rested my head against the chair. Jane and the baby took Hilda from me. If I wasn't happy they didn't deserve any happiness either. I swore when I remembered that I had not instructed Shane to see what Jane and the baby needed. I decided to go in search of him and exercise my limbs in the process so I followed his scent. I frowned when I realized that I was heading to the nursery. Had Shane gone into the nursery with Jane? I stopped at the door as I heard someone sniffing and listened. ‘Luna Hilda made the wrong decision. She should not have forced me on the Alpha. He hated me when she was alive, and now he hates me more,’ I heard Jane say, sniffing. ‘You are going to make a good Luna Jane. I guess Luna Hilda saw that in you,’ I heard Shane say to her. ‘No. I might make a good Luna somewhere else. As it is now, I am ready to sell myself off to any Alpha as a s*x slave, as far as I am far away from Alpha Jason. I never knew that there is a wolf in existence that is capable of hating me the way he does,’ Jane said, and that hurt, but I stilled myself against it. ‘What about baby Hilda?’ Shane asked and I heard Jane sigh sadly. ‘Believe me, baby Hilda is the only thing keeping me sane around here. If not for her, I would have poisoned myself a long time ago. My parents are gone, Luna Hilda is gone, I am better off dead, but the thought of baby Hilda is what is holding me back,’ Jane said, and I thought I had heard enough. I opened the door and burst in. Shane was sitting next to Jane holding her hands while the baby slept. They both jumped to their feet when they saw me. There was a look of surprise on Shane’s face but Jane looked so scared that her face went all white as if she was short of oxygen. ‘Excuse us,’ I said to Shane. Shane didn't argue as he left hurriedly without looking back. ‘Alpha. We were just talking,' Jane stammered the moment Shane closed the door. ‘Yes. I get that,’ I said and started walking towards her, making her step back till the back of her legs hit the chair, and she sat down with a thud. ‘And I heard you are willing to sell yourself off to an Alpha as a s*x slave just to be far away from me. If you dare run away from this pack, I will find you then tie you to a pole and flog you until your skin peels off. Then I will take each and everyone who partakes in helping you escape, then pluck their eyes out of their heads in your presence and feed it to you,’ I said, breathing hard. She was shivering as I spoke which made her scent more obvious in the room. I needed to get out of there immediately else I was going to pull her close and kiss her. My wolf was going into a frenzy as he looked at her in distress. Tears flowed down her eyes as her eyes grew rounder with every gothic picture I painted for her. I staggered out of the room as my head began to hurt. She wasn't even eighteen yet and her scent was attacking my senses. I only hope I can win this battle. But whatever it was, I wasn't going to give in. I wasn't going to allow Jane to replace Hilda. Never!
