Jane's POV
‘Wake up Jane. The Alpha needs your attention now,' Annette, the Omega girl I shared a room with said as I came awake.
The word Alpha was all I needed to sit up straight in my worn-out bed. I was out of bed in a flash.
'Where is he?’ I asked Annette in a shaky voice.
‘He is in his study upstairs,' Annette replied looking at me sympathetically.
Yeah. That was the look I had from most of the Omegas at the Alpha's house. I was someone to be pitied. I ran upstairs on my shaky legs wondering what level of trouble I was in.
I knocked at the study door. From the way I knocked, one could easily see that I was nervous and scared.
'Come in,’ the Alpha's deep voice said from inside so I quickly opened the door and entered.
I didn't bother greeting him because I knew he was aware that I was there. Besides, I was confused about whether to greet him or not. My greeting might anger him depending on his mood.
He didn't bother to lift his head. I knew he was intentionally ignoring me. Maybe he was waiting for me to call his attention so that he could light into me.
When he finally lifted his head, his gaze on me was so intense that I cringed. Without mincing words the Alpha was handsome. He stood over six feet with a chest as broad as that of a bodybuilder. His abs were excellent judging by what I have seen most times when he trains and goes shirtless.
I averted my gaze from his. Not because he would complain that I was staring back at him, but because he was making me uncomfortable with those dark eyes of his.
'How many minutes ago did I send Annette to get you?’ He asked calmly and my heart picked up a beat faster.
'I am sorry Alpha. I slept off after the rigorous…’
'Shut up. You are sleeping in the middle of the day? How convenient?' The Alpha shouted.
The Alpha stood up and I couldn't help but fear. I hated when he stood up to talk to me. He towered over my five feet figure and it always made me feel smaller.
The Alpha took hold of my shoulder allowing his fingers to dig into my skin. It was painful but I endured it.
'You are nothing but a piece of rubbish I took just to honor the dying wish of my only true love. If you dare disrespect me like this again, I will kill you and I mean it,' the Alpha threatened.
I didn't doubt that he could kill me. He had called for me one day, and I had not gotten there right on time, and he had gotten hold of my neck and held it so hard that I nearly died from lack of breath. It had taken the intervention of his Beta to get me out of his hold before he could choke me to death.
'I am sorry, Alpha,' I said, breathing hard.
'You should go to hell with your sorry. You demanded to see me. Now you have. What do you want?’ He asked going back to his seat behind the table.
'I wanted to inform you that Hilda needs some clothes and basic things. Her clothes are worn out,' I said getting on my knees.
'Who is Hilda again?’ He asked.
'Your daughter,' I said without looking at his face.
'You still call that murderer my love's name right? Next time you come into my presence and call that thing by that name again, I will throw both of you out of this pack. Is that clear? The only Hilda I know is dead and gone.’
'Yes, Alpha. I am sorry,' I said trembling.
It was a slip for me to call the poor child Hilda in the presence of the Alpha. I simply referred to her as 'baby.'
'I will look into the matter and tell Shane to get back to you. Now get out of my office,' the Alpha said and I quickly scampered to my feet and ran out of his office.
I headed straight for the nursery where Hilda was innocently playing with toys. Toys that were hand-me-downs from other pack members who took pity on the child.
I sat on the couch watching Hilda play and tears started running down my eyes. I couldn't help my situation. How can I help the innocent child?
'I permit you to take Jane as your Luna. She is a lovely child. She will make a good Luna,' those were the words that destroyed my life.
My name is Jane. I belong to the Cryptic Moon pack. I am an orphan. My parents died two weeks of each other. My father was one of the generals in the Cryptic Moon Army but he was killed in the rogue attack that claimed the lives of the former Alpha and Luna and some other highly placed and not so highly placed pack members. My mum couldn't take the pain of losing her mate. She became so heartbroken that she died two weeks after, making me an orphan. I was only fourteen at the time.
When the current Alpha, Alpha Jason was crowned, he took a chosen mate instead of waiting for his destined mate. According to him, he had no time to wait around for a mate that might never come. He was twenty-two years old when his father, the former Alpha, and his mother, the former Luna, were killed.
He had saved the rest of us by arriving on time with backup from the nearest pack. They had subdued the rogues and saved the rest of us but it was too late for his parents.
I have heard several times that the light died in his heart and eyes the moment his parents died. So he ran the pack with an iron fist. He took the woman he had always loved as his Luna.
Nobody could object to that because the pack needed some stability after the death of so many members. We all respected him because, within a year of his takeover as the new Alpha, there was noticeable growth and improvements in the pack. By the time he had spent a year and a half, the pack was one of the top packs in the area.
I was in the orphanage at the time. I remembered the first time I laid my eyes on Luna Hilda, Alpha Jason's chosen Luna. It was as if I had seen an angel. She looked so beautiful and ethereal. I smiled and waved at her happily. She paused on her steps that day and asked me to come over.
'What is your name my darling girl?’ She asked smiling at me beautifully.
'My name is Jane ma'am,' I answered politely.
'How old are you Jane?’ She asked.
'I will be sixteen in four months, ma'am,' I said, smiling happily at the fact that she chose to talk to me out of all the girls at the orphanage.
'You are so beautiful and you have such a pure heart. Don't ever allow anything or anyone corrupt that,' she had said to me and I nodded so hard that I felt pain in my neck.
Two days later, the matron of the orphanage called me into her office to inform me that someone had finally adopted me. I was happy and skeptical at the same time.
I had heard news of kids who were taken from the orphanage only to be returned days or months later by the adoptive parents and some ran back to the orphanage with tales of maltreatment.
The matron had told me that my adoptive parents had sent a car to pick me up from the orphanage. I had gotten into the car that day with the few friends I had made at the orphanage waving me goodbye.
It wasn't until the car stopped at the Alpha's house that I knew I was adopted by the Luna herself. She was waiting for me outside the house and happily welcomed me.
The Alpha had been neither warm nor cold towards me. At some point, I thought he hated me, but he never really showed it, and I stayed out of his way as much as I could.
The Luna was already pregnant by the time she adopted me. The pregnancy took a toll on her when she entered her fourth month. It got to a stage where she couldn't even come out of her room anymore.
I would go into her room most times and sing to her while she held my hand and smiled but the instant the Alpha comes in, I excuse them immediately.
According to the doctors, her genes were not strong enough to carry an Alpha blood so the baby's gene was working against hers. At the time, the explanation made no sense to me. It wasn't until she was dead that I realized that she was an Omega from another pack. The Alpha had met her in one of his travels and fallen in love with her.
She was told when she first discovered that she was pregnant that she might have to abort the pregnancy but she refused. She refused to terminate the precious life that was growing inside her. She kept hoping she was going to somehow survive the childbirth.
The day she went into labor was a very dark day in the pack. The doctors, at a point, thought it would be better to take the child out of the r, so they did, but that didn't save her life.
On her death bed, she asked that I be brought into her hospital room. I was afraid of going in there since the Alpha was there. But she insisted I come too. She asked the Alpha to adjust her bed. The Alpha broodingly did as she said without even sparing me a glance.
He stacked pillows at her back to help her sit properly. The Luna asked for the baby to be given to her. A nurse took the baby out of her bed and placed it in her mother's waiting hands.
'Come closer Jane,' Luna Hilda said to me.
Although I was wary of the Alpha's brooding presence, the look in Luna Hilda's eyes gave me the courage to step forward.
'Take the baby Jane,' Luna Hilda said smiling at me.
I stole a glance at Alpha Jason but his face was turned away from me. I took the baby from Luna Hilda and that was when I first held baby Hilda in my hands. I fell in love with her completely.
'She is yours now Jane. Take good care of her,' Luna Hilda said.
'Don't say that, please. I will take care of her with you by our side,' I said as tears rolled down my face.
'This is what the moon goddess wishes Jane. We can't fight her wish. I am an intruder here anyway, but I am grateful that I had the chance to meet you, and I know you will take care of our child,' Luna Hilda said, suddenly looking very tired.
'You are not an intruder. She is,' Alpha Jason said the last part with his piercing eyes digging into my soul painfully.
Luna Hilda had then said that she permitted Alpha Jason to make me his Luna. I was petrified at the idea. I was just a child going towards the age of seventeen.
Luna Hilda died two hours after that, peacefully in her sleep. Alpha Jason got drunk for four days straight, then after two weeks, snapped out of it and became even colder than he used to be. But it was as if he had a vendetta against me. Where did I wrong him?
