A whole month and a week later, I could walk without crutches but I was limping a little. I was just glad I was slowly regaining my movement. Lillian, seemed a little colder towards me and I didn't have the nerve to ask her why, until one day. I was walking and saw Calista walking out of a store across the street, and soon Amanda went up to her, and slapped her bags out of her hands, and then slapped her. Everyone was walking past and not doing anything to make Amanda stop. Calista just took it. "You stupid..." "Hey?" I shouted, pushing her off Calista. Then stood between them. "Get the hell out of my way!" she demanded. "Back off, demon spawn!" I yelled at her, and there was now a crowd forming. "You don;t know who you're messing with!" she snarled at me. "Really, show me who I'm messing with, or do you need to call Daddy to clean up your mess again?" She gave me this half-crazy looking grin, and that really unnerved me. I stood my ground, until she huffed at me. "You better be careful and watch your back." "I will." I said as she walked away. I then turned to Calista and handed back her bags, and walked back to the bakery. Lillian, was standing at the window, and shook her head at me. "You still haven't learned anything, have you?" "I wasn't going to let Amanda humiliate her like that!" "You have no idea what you're getting into, Alex!" she shouted at me. That was the first time she had ever done so. "Lillian, I can't be like everyone else and just watch as they..." "But you will let them kill you!" "No, that's not..." "You're playing a dangerous game, with players you have no business getting involved with!" "Is that what you've told yourself to stay away from others? My heart is safer if I don't put it out there. Guess what it grows cold and unfeeling the more you hide it!" She looked at me in surprise, and I felt a kind of relief as I said those words. "I can't, Lillian...I can't pretend anymore, I was forced to pretend that evil should be ignored and it was a weak thing, with no real power, but it does...leave it long enough and it grows, until it can't be stopped, I'm not letting that happen!" She was crying now, as was I. I walked her to one of the tables and we sat down. "Oh, Alex, I'm sorry...I'm just...tired and mad..." "No, you have nothing to be sorry about, Lillian, I came into your life and turned it all upside down." "No, honey, you brought a light into my life. A light I had no idea I had been missing. I love you, my little girl." I gave her a hug, and we sat there for a while. After a while, we cleaned our tears away, and got back to work. Later after work, we ordered pizza and sat down to talk. I finally came clean with why I had run away from home, and Lillian went pale. As I finished, she just held me tightly as I cried in her arms. "Your father has always been a beast. Your strength, you truly are...a warrior." "Every time a guy comes anywhere near me with the intention of kissing me or touching me has me freaking out. The day of the party, Chris and I were talking, he told me he knew I was a slayer, we were alone and I freaked." "Who brought you home then?" "Dalton, I ran out of the pack house and was halfway to the town. We just walked the rest of the way back." Lillian smiled. "See there are a lot of good men out there still, even if they are supernatural." I laughed at her, and soon the pizza was here, but right behind the delivery man were John and Dalton. "Hey boys, what brings you out here?" John sighed and cleared his throat. "Lillian, may I have a word alone with you?" "Um..sure, I guess." she looked at me and handed me the pizza box. They walked outside, it was a nice night. Closing the door to give them some privacy, I turned to Dalton. "Hey." he said lamely. "Hi, why did you come with your Dad?" "I..um...I'm sorry." "For?" "I said you could consider me a friend and I ran when things got hard, and I'm sorry about that." "I wasn't exactly forward with you either, so now we're even." "The thing is...I kinda knew." "You knew?" "Yeah, I'd heard rumors of Mateo, and curious I looked into it, and found out...who he was, then in meeting you, you show all the signs of PTSD a slayer usually has, I haven't met many but the few I have...they've seen some shit." "Yeah, well, I got over that after a few years, my demons are a little...deeper then that, and it happened among the very people that should keep you safe." "From a guy?" "Yeah." my voice threatened to crack, but I cleared my throat and controlled it. "That's what had you freaking out with Chris, he found out." "Not much of that, it was more...he wanted to get the truth out of me, he tried to get physical, and old...wounds reopened." "I wish I could say I was surprised but, that's Chris for ya. What I find interesting is, he's taken a personal interest in you." "Personal?" "Oh, yeah, Chris is a loner, very finish the case move on to the next one, and for the first time in ever, he's not just thinking about the case, he finds an excuse to come see you." I thought back and in all honesty, none of those were excuses, we'd always just seem to run into each other. " 'The wrong place, at the right time.' " I whispered to myself. "What do you mean?" "Just something he said to me, I seem to be in the wrong place at the right time." "Wrong but right at the same time." "Exactly, I'm guessing its the slayer energy." Dalton laughed. "Thank you by the way." "For what?" "For standing up for my sister, a few days ago she came clean about what she did. Dad was not happy, he put her wolf in a deep sleep she won't be able to phase for a while." "But isn't that dangerous for a wolf?" "Not if the Alpha does it, if a witch or something did it that's a different story." For some reason that made my ears ring, I grabbed the pizza box and took it to the living room, Dalton followed. "What can you tell me about Branfield?" "The family as a whole?" "Yeah?" "One of the riches family in town, um...I once heard they came from a powerful witch family, but nobody really knows, they just seem to throw money around." " Are they in any seats of power now?" "Well, Branfield, the father is owner of a big company, he's more into the whole industial thing, William too and Amanda...well she's just a spoiled drama bitch." "Owner of a BIG company?" "It's global if that's what you mean." "Huh, so they're rich rich." "What's your thinking?" "Nothing, it's just your sister is forced to attack me, and you just said a witch is the only one to have that kind of power, how did Amanda have the power to control, your sister and her friends?" "You really think, Amanda has that kind of power?" "There one way to find out." I said grabbing my phone, and putting in William's number. "Hello?" "Hi, Will, its Alex, from the bakery, I was wondering if your offer for dinner still stands?" "Alex, nice to hear from you! Yes, it still stands, what about Saturday at 8?" "Sounds perfect, see you then." I hung up and then looked at Dalton. "Um..what just happened?" "I need to know and if things don't pan out, Will and I go our separate ways and no one gets hurt." "I really don't like how that sounds." "Why?" "Because I don't know if you noticed, but a lot of the super naturals play for keeps, and Witches are third on the obsessive meter." "You really think he's that interested in me?" "Could be, but I can't say for sure." "Well, we'll have to wait and find out." I just finished when Lillian and John walked back into the house, Lillian giggling like a school girl and John looking the happiest he's ever been. "I'm guessing everything went well?" I said and they both smiled. "Well, I guess that my cue, good night, Alex." "See ya Dalton." "Alex, I would like to apologize and thank you." "For what?" "My daughter..." "It's all forgotten, John, I don't hold grudges." "Either way thank you, I was mad that Lillian didn't tell me, who you are, but I feel that having a slayer around isn't going to be so bad." "Thanks..I think." I laughed and so did Dalton, John gave me a hug. "You ever need anything just ask." "Actually, the witch..Jace, where can I find her?" "Sorry, that I have no idea, Chris does though." With that he gave me a nod and then they both were gone. I guess I had to talk to Chris. The next morning I went to the station and found Chris, but also Amanda. I dropped it and went to work, they came into the bakery, but I never got the chance to talk with him. I went for a walk kinda hoping to run into him, but he wasn't home either. A whole week of me trying to talk to him to find Jacelyn. Until one night, I was home alone, looking up the Branfield's blood line, and was just looking at one...the name rang a bell, but I couldn't pinpoint where I had heard it. My thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door, I went down stairs and to my surprise, Jacelyn was standing on my front step. "Hello, little sister." "Hey, I actually wanted to talk to you, um..come in." She stepped over the threshold, and went to sit in the living room. "I came to see how you were feeling, you were pretty bad." "Better now, I'll have a pretty big scar but I'm fine." "That's good, so what did you need?" "I've been looking for information..about a witches blood line, could you tell me anything if I asked?" She gave me an uneasy look, but nodded. "Okay, um..what can you tell me about the Branfield's blood line?" "Branfield?" "Yeah, do you know anything about them?" "Only that they haven't had magic for a few generations, Nestor's mother as the last witch in the family, she never past it to her son or grandchildren." "Well, can a witch gain powers, with pratice and such?" "Yes, but never great power, not like those that have magic past down by blood." "Hmmm, that's frustrating." "Indeed." she said simply, but never stopped looking at me. I finally looked up at her. "What's wrong?" "Nothing, it's just...a little ironic, you of all people asking about powerless witches when...." "What?" "Your mother...I knew her." I felt cold, but excited at the same time. "You knew my mother?" "Sorina Dan, she was of a very powerful witch family, last I heard she was married off to a slayer, in p*****t for helping them." I felt light headed and I couldn't breath. "What..what did the slayers do?" "There was and strong demon, but it was behind her family's knowledge, they called for help, as p*****t the Slayer wanted the eldest daughter for his son as a bride." I was so focused on what she was telling me, I didn't even hear when Lillian walked in, until she was standing right next to us. "What's going on?" Lillian asked and I turned to look at her. "How many were taken?" I asked Lillian but Jacelyn was the one that answered. "Two, the eldest and the second oldest." "What?" said Lillian now looking at Jacelyn, then back at me. I got to my feet, now glaring at my aunt.
