ADRIAN
I watched with a frown as Cara scurried away, not looking back as she went straight to the room she had occupied before, with her phone pressed against her ears. According to her, it was important, and she needed to attend to it. It made me wonder what she was on about.
Shrugging, I pushed the boxes to a corner in the living room, and proceeded to lock the doors. Flora was out for the day, so it was just the two of us at home. The thought made me smile. Like hell was I going to complain about that.
My phone rang, and I picked it up to see my mother calling.
“Ah hell!” I whispered, and brought it to my ears, expecting to hear an earful about me getting married, as was her new habit.
“Hello, mum.” I said in Greek, playing with the buttons of my shirt. I had pulled on a crisp white shirt, without any jacket to cover it, and had paid a lot of attention to how they fit snugly on my body, all in a bid to impress Cara. And it had worked. Especially when her eyes had been glued to the buttons I had left open intentionally.
Hah!
“Son!” My mother's high pitched voice filtered through my thoughts, slamming me back to reality. “How are you doing?” She asked, making me frown, and narrow my eyes.
When she sounded so sickly sweet like that, it meant she wanted something. Or was up to something.
“I’m doing okay, mama.” I replied. “How are you, and father?” I threw back, waiting patiently for her to drop what she was so eager to drop. I knew my mother, just like the back of my fingers.
A nervous laugh came in before her answer, peaking my interest even more. “We are doing fine.” Pause. “Uhmm…I just wanted to find out if you would be bringing Cara over to the family dinner this weekend…” and then the dramatic tone..as she let her voice trail off.
I had to stop myself from bursting out in laughter. She couldn’t even be subtle for once. As adorable as it would have been to indulge her, I decided to pass, giving her the answer I knew she wanted to hear. “Yes, mum. She is coming with me.” The squeal on the other end of the phone was enough to make me pull away the phone from my ears.
Jeez!
But I loved how happy she sounded. The only thing I hoped for was for Cara to play her part well. I could do anything to make my mother happy, but getting married was not it. I had had enough of women and their antics. Although with Cara…nahh…I wasn’t going to dwell on that.
I went on to indulge her in a few other topics, enjoying the attention I was getting. I wasn’t a mummy’s boy by any means. I was a full grown man. But then…sometimes…
CARA
I sat on the bed, staring worriedly at the door like it was the cause of the problem I had in my hands. If only my eyes were lasers, I was very sure I would have burned a hole through the doors at that moment. Why wasn’t Gabriel picking up his calls?
I had called only a few minutes after those pictures had come in, and yet, it seemed like in those few minutes, he had sonehow distanced himself away from his phone. Or was he intentionally avoiding me?
As for the pictures that came in…oh dear!
Somehow, Gabriel had gotten a hold of some pictures from the day Adrian had wheeled me out of the hospital. And then he had sent messages, demanding to know what the hell was going on and why I hadn’t told him that I knew Adrian.
Not wanting to text back, I had tried to call back, but it just kept ringing and ringing with no answer.
Even now, as I let my hands fall to my lap, and finally brought my worried gaze to my phone, I couldn’t help but think I was in deep deep trouble.
I didn’t realize my phone was ringing until the last second, and hurriedly picked it up, but was disappointed when I heard my sister's voice, instead of Gabriel’s. “I’m so sorry to call you so soon after you have just left the house, Cara. But it seems news does fly fast in that workplace of yours.” There was little pause before Elena continued. “Apparently, your Greek billionaire loves to save damsels in distress, even going as far as helping them with their wheelchairs.”
Huh? “Wait, what?” I asked, confused, as bile began to rise behind her throat.
“Cara, your pictures are everywhere. Pictures of you leaving the hospital with Adrian.” Was Elena’s reply.
Putting the phone on loud speaker, I opened the Daily Lines, to see for myself, and almost passed out. “But…but…how come?” I whispered, momentarily forgetting about Elena’s presence on the other side of the phone.
“At least they didn’t mention your name, ma’am.” Elena said, and sighed. “Listen, now is a very good time to back out of this thing with Adrian, and no one will get hurt. I don’t know what the hell it is you are doing, but I have a big feeling it’s going to get messy from here on. You know how your boss can be, Cara.” The warning in Elena’s tone was unmistakable.
“Elena…my job…” I tried to defend myself, but even to my ears, I knew I sounded wrong.
The hiss on the other end of the phone was loud. “Don’t even start with that! Think about it, Sis, while there is still time.” And then she hung up, not bothering to listen anymore, leaving me feeling dejected.
Somehow, Elena was right. In the few days I had stayed with him, there was nothing incriminating to write about him, but then again…he was my only pass to a promotion, and even keeping my damn job.
And there was the attraction that sizzled between us, like electricity. Deep down, I knew it wasn’t the damn article that had made me agree to this charade with Adrian. Far from it…it was the ‘thing’ between us.
Gosh, he had looked so delicious, earlier, when he had come to pick me up. The white of his shirt had blended smoothly, with his honey-toned skin, and I had been unable to get my eyes off the space he had created, by leaving two of his buttons open.
In the v of the his shirt, I had glimpsed the unmistakable outline of a hairy chest…not too much hair, but enough to give it a shadow, and a dusky appearance. One that made my mouth water, and made my imaginations run wild.
How it would feel to rub my hands over them, feeling them glide under my palm…
A knock sounded on the door, jolting me out of my daydream. “Cara?”
Oh dear!
