Chapter Eleven

CARA I was in my room, trying to write, since I had my laptop with me in the car that day, when I heard the commotion in the house. There were voices, a lot of them. I should have stayed in the room, but out of curiosity, I decided to come out to see what was going on. My excuse...the house could be burning. I swung my feet to the ground, getting up slowly so I wouldn't stress my still swollen ankle and walked over to the door, opening it. There was that annoying sound again! Why couldn't the door just open quietly? I hissed and prayed no body heard me, walking accross towards the staircase. The idea was to get a little peek. But my crazy mind didn't tell me something was definitely wrong since the voice had ceased. I was still struggling to go down the first set of stairs, when a figure popped on the landing. My eyes widened and I almost swallowed my tongue when I recognized who it was. I had to be dreaming, if not, the very famous mother, of the three Nikalauo brothers, was standing in front of me. s**t! "And who are you?" was the first thing that left her mouth as she let her eyes devour me, scrunching her very straight Greek nose. Oh dear. I scratches the back of my head as I tried to come up with something. "Uhh...uhh..." I stammered, my heart slamming against my chest as I prayed to the heavens to provide me with an answer. I couldn't exactly tell the woman that I had forced my way into her son's life just to milk him of a scandalous information that would give me my job back, and a promotion! Another figure popped on the landing, then another, and another. And in just a few minutes, four pairs of eyes were staring back at me. Two pairs held a lot of amusement in them. The twins. "Doesn't she speak, Adrian?" one of them commented, still looking at me. I cleared my throat, bringing my gaze to Adrian's as I gave him a pleading look. "What's going on here?" a very soft feminine voice asked, before I was blessed with the view of a very beautiful looking woman, as she joined the foot people on the landing. How were they all able to fit there. It crossed my mind to flee, but I just knew there was no point. I had already dug myself into a hole on this one. I cleared my throat again. "I'm Cara. Cara Ellison. I_" my very brief introduction was interrupted by Adrian who wiggled his way out of the group, removing the lady's hand from his arm, before heading up, towards me. I raised a brow at the gesture. "_what Cara is trying to say is, she's my girlfriend." Since they could only see his back, and not his face, he gave me a pleading look when my mouth dropped open on shock. A look that said play along. Oh dear. "Interesting." one of the twins said, and I could hear the mockery in his voice. "Since when did you have a girlfriend, Adrian. If I remember clearly, you have just had a lawsuit slapped on your face by one of your stupid flings." His mother queried, clearly not believing him. Even I didn't believe him. Adrian Nikalauo was the world's worst liar. Damn. Adrian seemed unfazed, coming to stand beside me, and kissing my temple, which made me feel things I didn't have time to dwell on. "I know. And I've tried to explain to you that that woman was just a gold digger, Ma." he said, and flung one arm around my shoulder. I couldn't breathe. And it wasn't just because Adrian had his arm around me, and that the warmth and closeness of his body was messing with me. No. It was because the other four people in the very confined space, now had their full attention on me. I was definitely not going to take the twins seriously. Because, even if I had just met them, it was obvious, from the twinkle in their eyes, and the tightness of their lips, that they were just waiting to burst out laughing. But the other two... Oh lawdy. The girl was staring daggers at me, and for what it's what, I kept praying silently for the ground to open and swallow me.To hell with the job. If I survived this, I was definitely going back to my house. "And how are you sure she is not like the others?" his mother asked, making me gasp. I opened my mouth to speak, but felt Adrian tighten his hold on me. She turned her gaze to me. "Forgive me, my son has gone through a lot, so I hope you understand what I mean?" even if she was apologizing, kind off, she still sounded really stern. "Mum, I can guarantee you, that she's not. Cara and I have been going out for a few weeks now. I wanted to introduce her to the family, but the lawsuit thing happened. And a few days ago, she got into an accident." at his words, his mother's gaze softened, and she placed a hand over her chest and frowned at me. "Are you okay, my dear?" she asked, climbing up the stairs to come stand in front of me. My dear? How did she switch from calling me a golddigger to calling me dear? I nodded as she placed a hand softly to inspect me. I bit on the inside of my lip to stop myself from saying anything to spoil the moment. What the hell had I gotten myself into? And how had it all escalated from one to one thousand in a matter of hours? "And Cara, why are you up? I told you to stay in bed." And once again, before I could say anything, Adrian whisked me into his arms and headed for my room. This time, I certainly wasn't thinking of him. I was thinking of his family, and that girl, which had just witnessed me being carried like a little child, to my room. Oh dear. I closed my eyes, willing myself to stay calm as I waited patiently for us to get to the room so I could deal with Adrian. How dare he put me in such stupid mess. Why would he lie to his family that I was his girlfriend, just like that. Without prior warning. And who the hell was that girl that looked like she was about to tear me to pieces with her look? Fucking hell!
