(Devon)
The moment I stepped into my family’s home, my ears caught Christian and our father having a conversation all on their own. They were laughing about something they had been discussing. I could feel the jealousy rising in me. If it wasn’t for Rebecca holding my hand, I would have torn the whole house down, demanding my father's love, and my rightful title.
Rebecca gave me a tight little squeeze before mouthing ‘you got this’, giving me the boost I needed before walking into the dining room. The room seemed to go silent as both me and Rebecca entered the dining room. As Christian got up from the table, he looked between me and my mate, then turned to my father and said he was going to head in for the night. For some reason, that gave me a reason to smile and open my mouth and say, "no, please don't depart on my account,"
The moment the words left my mouth, I felt a chill in the air. I looked over to my mate, who adorned a smug look on her face. If it wasn’t for the mate bond I don’t know if I would have ever looked at her, but the words that left her mouth next stunned everyone in the room.
"Actually, it works out perfectly that you're both here, as we need to discuss the matter of the true heir," Rebecca said.
It felt as if the room suddenly went from a comfortable 70 degrees to a frigid 40 degrees in a second. My hands felt clammy, and my body went stiff, as my father placed his wine glass down gently on the table and stood up from his seat. I didn’t know what was about to happen, but I knew it wasn’t going to be good because all the color from Rebecca’s face drained the moment my father spoke, "There's nothing to discuss, young lady. Christian is my designated heir and will assume the alpha role. If I were you, I'd choose my words more carefully."
I released the breath I was holding, expecting Rebecca to let it go, but she pushed further by apologizing in the most disrespectful way, “I didn’t mean anything by that, please excuse me father…” Rebecca was interrupted mid-sentence, and that’s when all hell broke loose.
My father slammed his fists on the table, yelling at her like a child, “That’s Alpha to you, you may be my son’s mate, but you will address me with the correct term!”
Christian stood up and stretched before walking out of the dining room. I just stood there like a deer in headlights, frozen, eyes wide, mouth opened in shock. My father tsk under his breath, looking up to address me, “when are you going to understand? You may be my firstborn son, but you are not my heir! My heir was born from my late Luna. A bastard can never be an heir. Keep your mate’s mouth shut and on a leash, and you may still be able to live a comfortable life here.” My father excused himself, leaving me and Rebecca in the dining room alone.
Anger filled me! My eyes darted to Rebecca. If it wasn’t for her, I could have had a peaceful conversation with my father and discussed different alternative positions for me, but no, she had to open her mouth and make it about her! My wolf reacted before I could. My claws extended, and my hand reached and grabbed Rebecca by the neck, shoving her up against the wall.
“DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!” my wolf, Hades, growled.
Rebecca’s face began to turn a slight shade of blue, as she gasped for air. Her nails dug into my hands, as I held my grip on her neck. The fear in her eyes was clear to her that she had f****d up miserably.
“Dev… Devon… I…can’t… breathe…” She managed to say, between gasps.
I threw her to the ground, towering over her, “Know your place woman, you are easily replaceable.” Tears fell from her eyes, I knew Hades’s temper better than anyone, and he was one not to cross when it came to plans, and Rebecca did ruin my plans.
I managed to get control of Hades before grabbing Rebecca and taking her to the room. Opening the door and shoving Rebecca inside, I walked over and took a seat on my bed, resting my head in my hands. Rebecca just stood there by the door, still shaking in fear.
“Sit down, Rebecca.” I ordered, and she complied by walking slowly to take a seat next to me. She was still shaking when I placed my hand on hers. I sighed, taking a deep breath and began to explain my frustration.
“Rebecca, if you want to be Luna so badly, why not try acting like one. Show my father that we deserve it.” I told her.
“It isn’t fair, you are the firstborn son, you should be, by birth right, be his heir. Why does Christian get the spotlight when he is only the second son?” She inquired, with teary eyes.
“Because, my dear mate, my mother was a mere omega, the bottom of the chain, she was nothing. My father only slept with her to have an heir, because his Luna wasn’t able to get pregnant. Unfortunately, three years after my own birth, his Luna was able to successfully give him a true heir. I was only a back-up, if she was never able to produce an heir.” I said, with my fists balled up.
“We still have time to change his mind, right? I mean the founder's ball is coming up, and with any luck Christian may not even show up.” Rebecca said, with hope.
I had almost forgotten about the ball coming up. It would be the perfect opportunity to show my father that I had what it took to lead the pack and run the business. I kissed Rebecca’s forehead, before turning to take a shower. This was the perfect plan to show my worth and prove myself. I just had to pray it would all work out in the end.
