Chapter 6: Lucifer’s Curiosity “Wow!” A voice full of rapture leaked out from my still open lips because of shock and amazement. How can one create such masterpiece? Looking from above the cliff, numerous ethereal clouds dotted its surroundings that serve as a backdrop to a land of towering mountains filled with streams, rivers, waterfalls and the spirit of nature. The deep blue sea seems never-ending, and the growing civilization of humanity keeps on moving like a tireless machine. All of this grand and magnetic creation of the creator can be clearly seen from up here. It is like the whole world is just beneath our reach. I stared at the mortal world with growing interest and curiosity. This dazzling scenery makes me unable to take my eyes of off it. Unconsciously, my wings began to spread with the intention of gliding down. “Wait, what are you doing?” Michael’s startled and alarmed voice froze my movements in midair. What am I doing? I looked at my position and bewilderment filled me. Why am I about to descend down? “I-I don’t know.” My voice came out in a breathless quiver. Michael stared at me for a minute before shaking his head. “Get down here first.” Michael sternly ordered, startling me a little because he never once used this tone of voice on me. Landing next to Michael, who currently has a very serious face unlike his usual self, I peered at my wings and gently stroked them. “What are you thinking? You almost broke a rule of the second heaven.” Michael solemnly said and gazed at the far reaching sky. “Nothing, I was not thinking of anything else other than pure interest to the mortal land that is in front of me.” I glimpsed at the scenery once again and the numerous bright lights that seem like little fireflies from here suddenly enraptured my entire being. Pure and bright souls that are supposed to be hidden by the mortal skin of a human being and can only be seen in heaven are now unhidden and crystal clear before my very eyes. What is happening? Why can I see the inner souls of a living breathing human? Questions and confusion flooded my mind as to what I’m currently experiencing. “Souls, can you see them?” I asked Michael in a pleasantly surprised tone. “What do you mean? I do not see anything other than the mortals busying in their daily lives.” Michael gave me an incredulous look before observing the humans on earth. “Are you sick and started seeing things?” Michael gave me a once over making me let out a sigh at his nonsense thinking. He might have forgotten that we are archangels and we do not get sick. “Never mind, I must be hallucinating or something.” I dropped the subject before he goes crazy on me. “Anyway, do not ever do that again, do you understand?” Michael quickly adorned his serious bearing earning a smile to almost paint my lips. I nodded with equal seriousness to relieve him of overthinking things. “I think we should leave, I almost panicked because of your stunts.” Michael patted his chest in exaggeration. “Okay, let’s go.” I agreed and gave one last long look at the stunning bright lights of souls before taking off and flying to the direction of my abode here in the second heaven. “Hey! Wait for me!” Michael’s loud shout prompted me to enhance my speed and escape his clutches or else I’ll be doomed to listen to his nonsensical stories and lectures. Ditching Michael is easier said than done with how stubborn he is, fortunately he was obstructed by some other Chief Archangels. Arriving at my simple home, a smile made its way into my lips. It is never wrong to have a home to return to. I entered my place and scanned the familiar design and furniture inside, though they are all white in color to conform to the mandate of heaven. Sitting down on the bed in my room, I remembered the scene earlier on the Heaven’s Edge and it stirred up my curiosity. Why am I the only one who can see the souls? Is it because I tried flying down the cliff? The recollection of the mysterious scene raced through my head. What secrets lies in what I saw? What answers will I learn if I descended at that moment? Michael’s stern face surfaced in my mind like a sudden blast of cold air putting out the accumulating embers inside me. I shook my head with force and closed my eyes to rest and to hopefully forget what I saw. Scattered lights poured in the opened window of my room and woke me up from my slumber. Unfortunately, as an archangel with excellent memories, forgetting what I saw is practically impossible, especially in just one night. Stretching my body for a couple of minutes, I let my wings to freely stretch in its full glory. As an archangel, I do not need to consume food or water but I will not make it if I don’t absorb the spiritual energy. The memory of the millions of bright flickering lights of human souls in the mortal land appeared in my mind like an eternal mark that will forever haunt me. “Why do I feel like this? Why do I feel like I need to see it in front of me with my very own eyes?” I muttered in utmost confusion. With my confused mind, my wings unconsciously drifted to that same place, the heaven’s edge. Feeling the rush of strong baleful winds cleared my mind. I sighed at how my wings can take me to the place that I long for. Standing in this steep cliff that connects the heaven and earth gave me an unprecedented feeling of peace and excitement. I feel like something is calling for me in that land. Something that I do not know and I want answers. Staring off in the distance, the scene of yesterday overlapped with what I’m currently seeing. “Lucifer, What are you doing here?” Michael’s voice resounded in the surroundings. I turned and faced him. I did not even notice his presence until he called for me. “I’m watching the human beings on earth.” I responded and looked down again. I felt Michael gave me a weird look. “Why do you like to watch the human down on earth?” Michael asks curiously as he hovers next to me, who is totally enraptured observing the humans. “No reason.” I answered plainly without taking my eyes away from the millions of human beings busy living their daily lives. In my peripheral view, Michael scrunched his brows and also looked down on the human beings on earth but his reaction shows he finds nothing interesting. “No reason? Why waste our break in a hundred years only to watch how human beings struggle to live, especially that the ones you are watching now will be long gone by the time another century comes?” Michael sounded confused. I faced Michael and gave him a smile. I do not want to hide anything from him. “I love their light, the brilliance of their souls.” My voice came out so soft that prompted Michael in a daze, but he quickly came back to his senses and was suddenly filled with solemnity. “Lucifer, do not joke around, love? No angel created by him is allowed to feel love for anyone other than him, we are not allowed to feel anything for others and only be loyal to him.” Michael’s voice came out stern with no space for discussion. I shook my head hearing Michael’s warning. “Why are we not allowed to having feelings for another being other than him?” I whispered in the air, as if I’m talking to myself. Michael heaved a deep sigh while gazing at the endless clouds of heaven. “We are only created to follow the duties of heaven, to follow his bidding without asking anything.” Michael said flatly, like it was drilled into him to think like this. I smiled, so softly that Michael dazedly looked at me with confusion. “We are his creations, so are the human beings, but why are they allowed to be free to feel and reach for anything, while we who he created with wings can’t even fly freely on this stretch of heaven and earth?” I asked while gently stroking my wings that shines brightly like the soft morning star.
