Chapter 3 - Present
Cassandra woke up the following morning with a horrible headache.
Her body seemed not to belong to her, and everything she tried to think about was a new wave of pain through her mind. However, what else could she expect after drinking so much with her friend the previous night?
Both Cassandra and the other woman had gone far past their limits, and there was no doubt about it as she slowly sat in bed, not wishing to get up… Although she eventually left the bedroom.
"How are you feeling?"
Millen didn't waste a second to ask her that as soon as her feet stepped into the living room. As usual, he knew she was there, even if his back was turned to her while he cooked something in his open kitchen.
"Like I've been hit by a truck several times, and I don't even know why I got up," Cassie answered him, laying her head against the countertop, showing she meant every single one of her words, “I am not even hungry.”
She finished saying, although her stomach soon disagreed, begging for food at the very same time.
"I made you some toast and coffee since I know you don't like to eat anything when you have a hangover,” and like her belly, Millen also ignored her comment, placing the food before her along with a cup of coffee, served in the perfect way she liked it… filled with ice cubes, unlike the other mug with the still-warm drink that he did for himself as he went to her side.
"... Thank you, Millen. But I’m not really in the mood for anything, not even coffee."
As if she had turned into someone else other than his friend that he had known for long years, Cassandra lifted her head briefly to refuse the food her body so desperately begged for before lying it down again, feeling the coolness of the marble against her skin.
... Her fiancé's betrayal was still hard for her to accept, and it was what made her feel so bad, other than the hangover...
“He was a d**k. You know that, right?” But back at her best friend's apartment, the man spoke without looking at her... In fact, his attention was wholly on his phone, paying attention to something else but her. “So, don't even try to blame yourself for that.”
However, it didn't stop Millen from figuring out what Cassandra had going through her mind amidst the growing silence between the two of them.
That was an old bad habit of hers which, more than once, he had mentioned to the woman about before.
Every single time something went wrong, either in her work or romantically, she blamed herself for it, looking for a solution that didn't exist among her faults...
... As if she could have prevented the paint from being delivered in the wrong color or her fiancé from accepting her friend's invitations to the bedroom if she had paid more attention to the little details between them…
“He could have done something early or told you about it and ended things up, but he didn't do that,” speaking as if he was much older than her, Millen went ahead with his words. “He could have rejected her, but he didn't.
And it was little details like this that always made Cassandra think that her best friend was quite different from other guys their age.
“Instead, he preferred to enjoy his time with her and keep you in the shadows as if nothing was wrong,” honestly, Cassie had no doubt he was right.
Yet, the thoughts in her mind kept telling her otherwise, and that was the worst thing about the whole thing. “In other words, he was a dick.”
"I know that! You don't need to state the obvious to me!"
Thus, annoyed, she eventually answered back to him, taking the mug from Millen’s hand as if it was hers before the bitter hot taste filled her mouth, just as she realized that it was his coffee.
“MY GOD!” Cassandra’s tongue burned with the unfamiliar sensation, “MY MOUTH!”
However, her friend was very calm among it all, while he only thought about how he would need to clean his floor again after having spent the whole morning cleaning the mess she made with Evelyn the previous night.
Millen did not even seem to care when she ran to the sink until he saw Cassandra with her head under the faucet, trying to quickly cool down her mouth with the cold water.
“Don't laugh! It wasn't funny!” Of course, it was natural for her to get angry when she heard his giggles, and even if it just left a minute, Cassandra went speechless when Millen approached her while apologizing.
“Are you fine?” His hand touched her skin, turning Cassie’s face to him, inducing her gaze to move up too, leading their eyes to meet.
... She could be easily called tall, but the height difference between her and Millen was extremely different from the one with her ex that if she didn't do so, she would find herself staring at her best friend’s lips...
“Hmm… Sorry, but… am-am I interrupting anything by any chance?" Evelyn's voice was a complete surprise out of nowhere.
It was still drowsy as she had barely got up, matching her messy hair and oversized clothes borrowed from her boyfriend, who was nowhere close by.
"O-o-of course not, Evelyn! What the hell are you talking about?!” Cassandra would never call Evelyn by her name, it would always be Evie, and it was proof of how embarrassed she was in that situation that meant nothing. “Are you still drunk, Evie?!"
Nevertheless, as she joined the other woman at the counter, she thought that nothing could be more impossible than THAT. Millen and her? There was nothing in those words from Evelyn besides drunk madness.
"You remember it is Millen we're talking about, right? Don't say another word that would make me more nauseous this earlier."
Quickly, trying to talk about anything else, Cassandra added as if Millen wasn't right there with them as she took another sip of her own cold beverage and him of his coffee in silence.
"Who knows… I mean! The world is a little box full of surprises, and we can never know what will happen next, like I didn't see myself ending with Ahren at all, but here we are! Dating for almost two years now… speaking of this! Where is my fluffy Bearwolf?!”
