Chapter 4 - Present - Cassandra “… speaking of this! Where is my fluffy Bearwolf?!” "He had an emergency last night when you two were leaving, so he left you here and went straight to work.” Millen was the one who replied to Evelyn's question as he was also the only one who knew the answer to it, while reminding the women how he was there with them too. “And, about us… the world would surely end if it ever became true." However, instead of displaying any dislike for their talk, he merely played along with Cassandra’s words as he completed his answer to Evelyn before finishing his coffee as the reminder on his phone went off, and he left saying that he had a meeting that morning. ... Millen and Cassandra worked at the same design company, but once in a while, he would help his parents with their family’s business as well as he would do that morning… "I need to go now, or I'll be late.” As he put his mug at the sink, the man remembered something important that he should remind those two if he didn't wish them to miss it due to their poor conditions. “And don't forget about the pre-opening party at Southeast Resort tonight, you two. It's also a celebration for the finished restoration, so we must be there." The Southeast Resort had been the result of the combined work between him and Cassandra, and the last thing Millen would wish for was the woman to end up missing it due to the events from the previous night. She worked very hard on it and had a major part of the credit on that project that Millen wanted to make sure everyone knew about it, exposing Cassie’s name for the very first time to the small press present there as they all belonged to the right magazines, pages, and blogs anyone could know. * * * "You should definitely date him for sure. Or at least, someone like him instead of your asshole ex." In a rather grave tone that didn't suit her very well, Evelyn said it to me as soon as Millen closed the door behind him and left to work. “... Who? Millen? We both just told you five minutes ago how it wouldn't work,” I wouldn't say things had never gotten a little weird between us. However, I would tell Evie this to use against me as I moved around his kitchen as if it belonged to me, searching for the chocolate cereal box that I was pretty sure I had left here the last time I came over… A thing that had been less than a week ago, but who cares about it, right? “Yeah, I know. But that doesn't mean you two couldn't be together in the end. Honestly? Yeah, it would be weird as f**k at the first. Yet, at the same time, it would all be so natural after a couple of days, seeing how you two already act like an old couple with each other.” It wouldn't be Evie if she easily gave up, so, as she brushed her blonde hair aside, she left me without arguments as… she wasn't when I stopped to think better about it… “See! You don't have words to disagree with me either!” Catching me off guard, Evie went on saying amid my silence, happy about her little triumph. “C’mon! You need to agree with me on this, Cassie!” Evie had completely gone into Team Millen mode, and she didn't care to try to hide what she was doing now as she talked about my more than ten-year-old friendship that began when I was just a little girl. “Nothing that you had with the little freaking cheater could ever be compared with your relationship with Millen. You two are so different, yet so in tune with at the same time that it's like you were playing the same melody all along without anyone noticing it.” “… gosh! Stop, Evelyn! I know what you are trying to do, and it will not happen!” I wasn't sure if I was fighting back against her words or the silly thoughts in my head as I moved to the couch to eat my big bowl of cereal. "Don't be mad Cassie. But, you and my cousin… you two are always on the same page, so don't tell me that you never thought about it before? Besides, I don't know anyone else who would give their place's key to a friend of the opposite sex." "Neither do I, but that doesn't mean anything. We've known each other since forever. It was the perfect idea for emergencies when we moved here, and everyone agreed with it. Even, you!” ... I didn't know how much truth lay in my words as our families didn't live crazily away to give us the need to do something like this. Yet, as Evie had said earlier, it was just... natural for Millen and me… “It doesn’t matter the reason. It just proves once again how right I am.” If someone had told me that Evie won an amazing award because of this, I would have believed them, especially after seeing the big smile on her face then as if I wasn’t trying to disagree with her… … there was no win in that any time soon, so I could only agree with her… "... Think whatever you want to think, Evie." After taking a deep breath, I let it out, not wanting to wonder anymore about the odds of what it would be like to have a relationship with my best friend… or how wrong it all could go.
