I had just finished school and was heading to my room to get changed. I was going straight to the gym afterwards to work with Jason.
We had been doing workouts every other day ever since my 7th birthday, but I wanted more. I had asked if we could train every day, but Jason said that would be too much for my body as I was still young. He said we could try some tracking training today though, so I was happy, I loved tracking training.
Once I reached my room, I changed into sweatpants and a vest top. I grabbed my black hoodie as I walked out my door, as we would be out in the garden today. I ran out my room and down the stairs. I took two steps at once. I got down the stairs in record time this way.
I grabbed the banister rail as I hit the last step and swung myself round the bend. I was still trying to be careful not to bump into anyone as I did it. I had a good feeling for today. I ran all the way to the gym where Jason was going to meet me.
“You're not supposed to be running Adonis!” Came my mother’s voice.
“Sorry mum.” I shouted back. She must have seen me at some point.
I slowed down to a speed walk begrudgingly. I passed a few or the warriors as I headed into the gym.
“Good luck Adonis.” They said as I went past them.
“Thanks guys.” I shouted back.
I had seen a lot of them in the gym as I trained with Jason. Most of them helped me and encouraged me. A few were sceptical but Jason never let their negative comments last long.
I burst into the changing rooms where me and Jason normally met.
“I’m ready Jason…” I said happily looking for him, however he was nowhere to be seen. I linked him.
“Jason where are you?” I asked.
“Use your senses and you will find me!” He said with a snigger in his voice.
“Oh, you're on.” I said confidently.
I started trying to find his scent in the changing rooms. It was quite difficult as there were so many different scents today. It was as if someone had purposefully put extra scents in here.
After 10 minutes I found his scent and began to follow it, it led all around the room and out the back entrance.
That’s when it got even harder. Spring was in full force; the flowers were starting to open, and the trees were starting to flower and pollinate. There were so many different smells.
I stood at the door and closed my eyes, trying to concentrate on Jason’s smell. I found it after a few moments and focused on his smell alone.
It led towards the woods, rather than our normal route into the rose bushes. I looked out to the woods nervously; I hadn’t been near them for weeks, last time I did I was watched by someone, and it had scared me.
I took a deep breath and began to track Jason’s scent to the main path that led through the woods. His scent seemed stronger now and was pretty easy to follow, just then there was a breeze that began to carry his scent away from me. I picked up my pace trying to keep ahead of the breeze and keep his scent stronger.
I slowed down as I reached a thick section of the woods and began to listen. I stood perfectly still with my eyes closed. I could hear the leaves rustling and trees creaking. I could hear the breeze as it passed through the woods. I could hear the river in the distance, as it flowed. The water level was high due to the water coming from the mountain nearby. I heard some branch’s snapping to my left.
I remained perfectly still but began to survey my surroundings. I could see the path branch to the left among a few cherry trees. They were in full bloom and the smell from them was almost overpowering.
That’s when I put a plan into motion.
I walked towards the cherry trees and under the lower branches, making sure to mask my own scent with the smell from them. I knew Jason would begin to stalk me soon. I sprinted around the path and hid in some thick wild rose bushes. I thought their smell would cover me.
I caught my legs on the thorns and cut into my calves, I winced in pain but tried to remain as quiet as I could. As I crouched down hiding, I could hear Jason coming closer. I prepared to jump out and surprise him, but he jumped from behind me and scared the life out of me instead. I screamed out and fell right into a rose bush, cutting my arms too. Jason’s face went from surprised to be horrified.
“Oh my god Adonis. Are you ok?” He said worriedly as he reached and pulled me up. “I didn’t mean to hurt you; I am so sorry.” He spoke rapidly. I knew he was worried as he said my actual name not young master.
“It hurts Jason.” I said as a few tears began to fall down my cheeks.
He got me out from the bushes and began to check the cuts on my arms and legs. A gust of wind came from the east and a scent came with it, as the scent hit me the pain stopped instantly.
I whipped my head around and looked in the direction that the wind came from. Jason looked at me puzzled and then he sniffed the air. I saw him stiffen up in a split second out the corner of my eye. He looked confused. His eyes glazed over, and he stood up in front of me. He was in protection mode.
“Adonis, stay behind me!” He told me via mind link.
“What is it, Jason?” I asked naively.
“Keep quiet!” He scolded via the link.
I heard his wolf’s voice too. Before I could say anything, else there were 4 wolves approaching us. Two from behind and two from the side. They were our warriors.
Jason then shifted in front of me. I fell backwards as he shifted into his Wolf. I had seen his wolf and others, but I hadn’t been this close when anyone had shifted. His wolf let out a low growl and the 4 other wolves surrounded me.
“Go back to the pack house with the warriors Adonis.” I heard in mind link from Jason.
The Wolf to my left brushed her nose under my arm, signalling for me to follow her. I did as I was told instantly. The scent was still in my nose. I followed the wolf in a sort of haze, I knew what I was doing but couldn’t focus. I was trying to figure what the smell reminded me of.
The wolves walked me back to the pack grounds, my mother was waiting for me, Auntie Chloe was beside her. Once I caught sight of them, I began to run towards them, the wolves remained by my side and even when I reached mum, they stayed with us.
Aunt Chloe picked me up and my mum hugged me while I was in her arms. That’s when she smelled the blood.
“What happened?” She asked nervously.
“I fell over and cut myself when me and Jason were training, and then I smelled something, then Jason turned into his wolf and the wolves brought me back. What was it I smelled mum?” I said all at once.
“I don’t know Adonis. Let’s get you inside and cleaned up. We can talk inside.” Mum said turning towards the house. She gave a quick nod to the wolves, and I saw them all turn and run towards the woods again.
“Is Jason going to be ok mum?” I asked worriedly.
“He will be fine. He’s with your father and Arron.” She said as we reached the kitchen door.
I looked back out onto the grounds, but it was quiet. As we entered the kitchen a familiar scent hit me. Vanilla frosting.
“That’s it.” I shouted out loud. Chloe and my mum looked at me surprised.
“What on earth are you talking about?” They asked in unison.
“I smelled it outside mum. I smelled your vanilla frosting while I was in the woods.” I said happy that I had figured it out. “Does that mean you have been making cupcakes again mum?” I asked her excitedly.
“You will need to wait till supper time young man. You have to eat all your dinner up first.” Mum said with a puzzled look on her face.
“I bet you impressed I smelled that all the way outside, aren't you?” I asked her naively.
“I most definitely am Adonis. Now let’s take a look at all this cuts, shall we?” She asked me.
I nodded my head and held out my arm so that they could take my hoodie off and look. We counted all the cuts as mum and Chloe wiped them clean and made sure I was ok. After they had thoroughly checked me over mum sent me to get changed ready for dinner. I happily complied with the thought of a cupcake for pudding.
