Sky pulled into the lot of one of the largest companies in his territory. It required a new accounts manager and it had people he trusted to keep Kayleigh safe so it would be best for everyone involved.
She hadn't talked to him since the parking lot of the café. Once, he thought he saw her look at him from the corner of her eyes but he couldn't be sure. He knew it wasn't easy for her but when she brought up disappearing again, his wolf had gone full protocol. And his control on his wolf these days was shaky at best.
"We're here." He announced and she opened her car door and got out without sparing him a glance. "Okay." He mumbled under his breath before following her.
Kayleigh looked up at the building. It looked similar to the one in Chicago. About 20 stories, glass and blue walls. She wondered again where she was. The place didn't seem out of the ordinary. It looked just like any well flourishing town would. A well flourishing big town.
"Good morning, Alpha." She heard people chorus and turned to see a group of people bow to Sky. They gave her weird looks but nodded good morning to her too.
'Who do you think she is? I've never seen her before' She heard one of the women in the group whisper.
"Let's go." Sky gestured pretending not to hear them. She walked ahead of him looking around cautiously.
"You know you do that a lot." Sky commented and she threw him a questioning look over her shoulder as they entered into the building. "You are constantly looking around. Studying your environment?" He wondered "Even if you want to get out that bad, it is fascinating how you always to look around like you are waiting for something to jump at you. Do you really hate it that much?"
She paused mid-step and he stopped with her. She did not move for several moments so Sky side stepped so he could look at her. She looked like she was thinking about something deep. Her eyes were a little darker and she was not looking him straight in the eye as she usually did. The faraway look in her eyes did not seem like the dreamy kind.
"Hey," He frowned when she didn't reply. What was she thinking about? "Kay?" He put a hand on her shoulder and she jerked as if coming out of a trance. "What is wrong?" He asked and she shrugged off his hand.
"Apart from the obvious, nothing.”
“Sweetheart, you looked ready to have a panic attack seconds ago.” His voice was gentle, worried.
“I was wondering which way we were to go."
"Is that right?" It was an outright, obvious lie.
"Wesley, don't you have a job to do or something? You should show me where I'm going to work so you can leave." Was her quirky reply. He raised his eyeballs to the high heavens.
"A simple yes would suffice."
"Where's the fun in that?" She asked and started to walk again.
"You're going the wrong way." Sky told her and she turned to him.
"Whose fault is that?" She stopped to look at him. He just shook his head a smile playing on his lips and turned left. He moved slowly waiting for her to catch up to him before he increased his pace.
They got to the end of the large area where an elevator was located and Sky pushed the button.
"Why place an elevator in a corner?"
"It's a private elevator." Sky told her and she nodded.
"What am I going to be doing anyway?"
"We need a new manager for the accounts department here. I figured you'd fit perfectly." He explained and she answered after a moment.
"If you were not hell bent on keeping me kidnapped I might actually like you" The elevator opened then and he gestured for her to go in then went in after her.
"Incidentally, you will come to like me." He assured her "It's impossible for you not to."
"Oh really?"
"Do you know what matches made in heaven are? It's a belief that some people were created specifically for one another. That's what the mate bond is. A match made in heaven or at least an equivalent." Kayleigh scoffed at that. "Plus, who wouldn't like a handsome, smart and rich guy?" His voice was teasing and it took Kayleigh a minute to understand his reference.
She turned to him sharply mouth open.
"The F...." She trailed off "How did you...?" She had heard her coworkers talking about him and had whispered those exact words under her breath. And that had happened on a day he was not in so how did he know that? She narrowed her eyes at him but he just shrugged and when he turned to look at her, he grinned at her wide eyes.
"You look like a deer in headlights. Very adorable." He said "You're beautiful." He added seriously and he saw a faint blush appear on her cheek before she seemed to get herself and the blush disappeared.
The elevator pinged a moment later and they went off. Sky led the way through the impressive hallway. The walls were a brilliant white with a line of ash at the middle. It went all around. The floor was darker ash tiles. And was pretty even though still appropriate for a work place.
The people in the office froze when Sky walked in them started working double time. While keeping out of his path and saying their 'good mornings'. They didn't spare Kayleigh and gazed at her through the edge of their eyes.
"You." Sky called and the middle-aged man Sky pointed at froze then walked briskly to him.
"Yes Alpha," he answered trying but failing to keep his voice from trembling.
"Get me Jo. Tell her to meet me immediately at the account managers office." He said and the man bowed before rushing to fulfill Sky's request. He moved faster than a human.
Sky walked on and Kayleigh followed taking in her surroundings.
They entered through a white door into a section of the office that had glass walls. The people in the office stood quickly and bowed as one as if on cue. They were all dressed formally. And Kayleigh started to rethink her outfit.
Sky waved a hand and they bowed again before sitting down and continuing their work.
"What, no 'good morning, Alpha' from them?" Kayleigh whispered at him ignoring the gazes of what felt like a million eyes.
Sky nodded then opened the door of an all glass office. It was what one would describe as average sized. It had a work desk at the end and a sitting area with two cream couches opposite each other. There was a cube table in-between them where fake fruits took pride of place. Everything in this office was interior design standard.
"Nice." Kayleigh commented.
"Your work space." Sky informed then closed the door behind them "Like I told you, there is a kind of hierarchy system here. The people who work in accounts are highly trusted and placed. They are closer to me in status so are more composed and opinionated." He explained and she nodded.
"So, what happened to your last accounts manager?" She asked and he stared at her for a while before crossing his arms.
"This doesn't seem fair." He commented suddenly.
"What?" She turned from the table she was tracing to frown at him.
"I keep on answering your questions but you never answer mine."
"Life isn't fair," she shrugged.
"Let's make a deal," he suggested sitting on one of the couches and crossing his legs.
"Shoot." She sat on the other couch and imitated him.
"I answer 2 of your questions and you answer one of mine."
"I have a bad feeling about the kind of questions you'd ask so no thanks."
"Chicken."
"What?!" She straightened on the couch.
"You're just scared I'll start doing things that you like and you'll fall head over heels in love with me."
"What?!"
"It's understandable. I mean girls are like that."
"Oh really?" She challenged "Well then we have a d..." She paused then smirked lightly before reclining on the couch and recrossing her legs "I see what you're doing."
Sky had to go past the tightness in his chest to reply. Her smirk made him think things. Dirty things. Damn it, it was just a smile. But he wanted, needed everything's about her. It was all so new and explosive to him. "What am I doing?" He asked her keeping his voice steady.
"You're trying to provoke me into accepting." She accused and he shrugged "You're not going to deny it?"
"Would you believe me if I said that wasn't the case?"
"Definitely not."
"Then it's a moot argument."
"Smart."
"You're liking me already."
"You wish."
"Alpha." One of the girls Kayleigh met on the first day greeted out of breath clearly from running.
"Does it take 8 minutes to get around an office?" Sky asked in a very serious tone not looking at the new arrival.
"I'm sorry Alpha. There was a problem I had to take care off and...." She cut herself off and swallowed when Sky turned to stare at her, hard, "It will not happen again." She bowed low.
Kayleigh blinked at the display. It was amazing how his voice went from teasing to serious and commanding. And it was also extremely sexy.
'Shut up' she told her subconscious. She pitied the girl Sky's hard stare was directed at.
"I should hope not." Sky stood up. "Miss Murray here will take over for Owen." He stated and Jo looked as if she was just noticing Kayleigh.
"Luna." She bowed quickly "I'm sorry I did not notice you earlier." She apologized and Kayleigh waved it off. She was getting uncomfortable with the Luna stuff.
"You seem to be full of mistakes today," Sky reprimanded with a sigh. "Did something happen?"
"No Alpha." She replied quickly then thought better of it when she saw Sky's raised brow. "I had an emergency with my kids this morning." She explained "Roy is in the hospital."
"Ah...that explains it." He nodded and his stern expression relaxed a bit. “Something serious?”
“No Alpha. It has been addressed. He is home now.”
"Good. As I was saying, Miss Murray will be working here. I expect you to show her the workings and everything. Stay by her side for the whole of today and take her to lunch some..." he was cut off by Kayleigh.
"Are you giving me a babysitter?" She questioned.
"No, I'm giving you a helping hand but you can call it what you want." He turned back to Jo ignoring Kayleigh's expression. "I'm leaving you and Raven in charge of her security. Nothing, nothing should happen to her." Jo nodded fiercely at that.
"Who shall I introduce her as?” Jo questioned.
“Yes, who shall she introduce me as?” Kayleigh turned a tight smile to Sky.
"Just introduce her as the new account manager and if there are any more questions, my special guest."
"Yes Alpha."
"Excuse us for a moment." Sky asked and nodding, she left closing the door behind her.
"You're giving me a babysitter?" Kayleigh repeated.
"You need it." Was his reply "Jo is a very trustworthy and efficient worker. She's been an assistant to the Accounts manager for 10 years. You can depend on her for anything." He explained.
"I have no idea what to say to you right now."
"You don't need to say anything." He sighed "I wish you'd have stayed at home though," he rubbed his eyes. "There's going to be a lot of gossip. Could you try to keep a low profile for a while?"
"Sure whatever."
"I have to leave now," he turned to go then turned back with a devil's smile. She eyed him cautiously and stopped herself once again from stepping back. But when he stopped an inch away and started to bend to her height, she bent back too. There was no way she'd let him kiss her again “Do you want to kiss me goodbye?" He whispered.
"Don't tempt me to turn you into a toad." She warned him and he quirked a brow as if to ask a question then just moved back a bit.
"Tonight." He seemed to promise himself then strode out waving at her as he reached the door before leaving.
Kayleigh watched him walk out and sighed. Putting a hand to her chest, she rubbed lightly to calm her beating heart. A moment later, Jo walked in and immediately let out a long breath. Kayleigh watched in amusement as she seemed to gather her breath before she looked at her and smiled a very polite smile.
Kayleigh was not really paying attention to their conversation during their last conversation but she remembered Jo was one of the quiet girls in the group. She looked to be around 30 with blonde hair in a bob. She wore a blue pencil skirt and cream button up. She looked like one of those strict movie business women with her small glasses.
"What would you like to do first, Miss Murray?" Jo asked.
"If you are going to babysit me, then we should be on first name bases."
“It is not babysitting, Miss Murray. I am simply helping.”
“Yeah, sure.” Like she would believe that. “Call me Kayleigh.”
"Of course.... Kayleigh?" She wondered and Kayleigh nodded.
"That's good."
"So, I would like a brush on the company’s activities and I'd appreciate a log of the books for the last year." Kayleigh asked.
"I will do that."
"Any meetings or events?"
"There were but they were all cancelled when Owen retired."
"Alright. Let's go over the company's.... everything. Fill me on and leave nothing out." Kayleigh asked sitting down and gesturing to the couch opposite. Suddenly she cursed.
"Is there a problem Miss Murray?"
"My latte..." Kayleigh started but shook her head. She'd left the latte in Sky's car. She hoped it tumbled over and stained his beautiful seat. Just to see his reaction.
"Miss Murray?" Jo frowned.
"Kayleigh.”
“Kayleigh?”
“It's nothing. You can start."
Almost an hour later, Jo concluded and Kayleigh had gotten most of the needed information.
"Can you schedule a meeting with all the executives in this department? I want charts of their sectional workloads, yearly goals, future expeditions and project data. I'd like to get those books as soon as possible too." Kayleigh asked.
"I'll get on it immediately." Jo assured standing up.
"One more thing." Kayleigh said making Jo turn back to her "This supposed war between the wolf clans, how long has it been going on."
"That's not a very answerable question. It's not a war yet. It's more a power struggle. And territorial disputes."
"Liar." Kayleigh muttered under her breath.
"But power struggles here are quite extreme. It's like silent battles, spies, kidnaps, framings...." Jo shivered "It's really lucky that the Alpha was able to get to you before anyone from a rival clan did. That would be disastrous for us." Jo concluded with a knowing look.
“Why do I matter?” Kayleigh tried to play it off but Jo just smiled politely and nodded her goodbye before leaving.
"What do I do?" Kayleigh sighed to herself putting her face in her hands.
