12. End of an era

"If I had asked you on a date then what would you have said?" Sky asked and she stared at him a moment. Of course, she'd have said yes. Who didn't want to go out with a roguishly handsome, deep voiced, young millionaire? But there was no way she was telling him that. She opened her mouth to give a tart response when she was saved from responding at all by the pretty blonde who had walked to their table. "I am so sorry, Alpha. I did not see you walk in. I was at the kitchen and..." She rushed to explain but Sky stopped her. "It's okay Hayley. I understand." "Thank you, Alpha. Miss...." She turned to Kayleigh. "Murray." Kayleigh answered quickly ignoring the question in the girl's eyes. "That's Luna Kayleigh to you." Sky corrected and the girl jumped, chocked and went wide eyed in the space of a second. "I am so sorry Luna. Please forgive my insult. I swear I did not know. I...." She was trembling. "It's fine." Kayleigh frowned at the girl who looked like she was about to pass out then glared at Sky for the way he introduced her. "Thank you, Luna." The girl bowed her head "W....W.....what shall i....ge...g....get you Luna?" "Um....you have toast?" "I'll make some immediately." Was Hayley's rushed reply. "Toast....buttery please and orange juice and latte to go." Kayleigh replied. "Yes Luna." Hayley replied then turned to Sky. "Tea and croissants." He replied and the girl all but ran to fulfill the orders. "Why not coffee?" She asked before she could stop herself "Never mind you don't have to answer that." But she wanted him to. He got tea the other day too at the office. "I don't need the extra caffeine." "Who doesn't need extra caffeine in the morning? Plus, you could get decaf." "I could but tea is better." "That's so English." "My great grandfather was English so it may be in the blood." "Explains the accent." She nodded and raised a brow at his smile. "What?" She questioned feeling a bit uneasy. His smile made her think of beautiful sunsets with both of them in each others’ arms. Which was weird. Who thought of romance just because of a smile? "You have been paying attention to me. The accent is too subtle to just have noticed offhandedly." He answered and grinned wider at her bewildered gaze. "See, you would probably have said yes if I'd asked you out." "We'll never know now, will we?" She shrugged "What's her deal?" She nodded towards Hayley who was struggling to control her shaking and get their order ready as quickly as possible. "She's a submissive wolf." Sky shrugged. "In a b**m way?" Kayleigh frowned making Sky chuckle. "Is that the first thing that came to your mind? You have some dark thoughts." He teased and her cheeks turned just half a shade darker. "There are 3 types of wolves." Sky explained "The submissive, the dominants and the ones that are somewhere in between. Dominants are usually from higher up in the pack. And the submissive are lower down the ladder. In some cases, though higher ups can be submissive and the down below could be dominant. It's more of the nature really. Hayley is a submissive. She'll probably ask how high if you tell her to jump." "Can I do that?" "What?" "Ask her to jump?" "Yea... But why would you?" He asked slowly. "So, I'm going to be like the queen of a wolf Kingdom if this," She gestured between them "becomes a thing." "You already are the queen of this wolf kingdom. And this is already a thing." "We'll see about that big boy." Kayleigh told him as Hayley brought a tray to the table and set out the food in front of them. "A...a...anything e...el...else Alpha?" She stammered. "No. You?" He asked Kayleigh and she shook her head lightly "That'll be all. Thank you, Hayley" He said dismissing her. The girl bowed deep and was already turning to leave when she stopped and turned to Kayleigh head lowered. "I.... I.... It's n...ni...nice....to...m...meet... you...L...Luna." She said sounding unsure. "Are you always here, Hayley?" Kayleigh asked and the girl nodded quickly "I'll come often. You make good orange juice." Kayleigh told her and the girl looked up slightly to see Kayleigh had already taken down half of the juice. She blushed scarlet. "Th.... Thank.... You. L... Luna" She bowed deep again and walked away briskly. "You're good," Sky commented when the girl was out of earshot. "I'm good at so many things you're going to have to be specific." She told him then took a neat bite out of her toast and moaned "Wow...this girl is good." The moan traveled through Sky like a power switch. He cursed under his breath. Ever since he met her, he found himself constantly having to bring himself to heel. Every move she made was turning him on. Especially the way she licked her lip to get the crumbs off. He wanted her to stop because it was driving him crazy. At the same time, he wanted her to continue. The fact that she was unknowingly seducing him added to the appeal. He'd never had a problem calming himself down before but this simple act seemed beyond erotic. It felt like years of longing was piling up in his chest to form an inferno of need. She snapped a finger in front of his face effectively drawing him out. "Earth to the Wolf king." She stated, "What are you thinking about?" "You'd regret asking that question if I tell you." "Fine. What did you say I was good at?" She asked and he had to do a manual rewind to remember what they'd been talking about. "Oh... You're good at being powerful." "It does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out. But, I'm good at lots of things." She shrugged, ate the last bite of toast, and all but downed her juice. “Orange juice?” "Apple juice is better but I already had that last night. It's like the diamond in the middle of a pile of money." Her analogy, Sky decided, was quite revealing. So, she liked diamonds and dreamed of piles of money. He could do that. But with how stubborn the woman seemed to be, it'll take hell to get her to accept things like that from him. He wanted to ask when she had dinner since she had been asleep when he arrived but he kept his question to himself. Then he saw it. Her smile. He had only seen her smile a few times and they were professional. Now she smiled lightly. Like she was reliving a good memory. Her lips raised and her eyes a little dreamy. She looked almost like a teenager. "Beautiful." He whispered under his breath. And then it was gone. Just as simple as it appeared. He wanted it to come back. He promised himself he'd figure out how to make her smile like that more. "You done?" Sky asked her noticing she cleared her plate. She clearly wasn't concerned about putting on weight. "Yeah. You seem to not have touched your croissant. Aren't you hungry?" A mental image that was not at all related to food popped into his mind. He shoved it away at once. He was going crazy. Probably needed a psychiatrist. "I'm fine. Do you still want your latte?" "I need the caffeine." She shrugged. She watched him wave Hayley over. The girl rushed to them holding the latte in a very fancy-looking plastic cup. She had a pack of napkins with it. "Y...y...yo...our latte L....l....lu...una" She presented it. "Thank you" Kayleigh collected it but left the napkins "Never mind those." "Hayley, keep this quiet. The Luna's arrival is not up for official announcement yet." Sky instructed and the girl nodded quickly. "Y... Y...es....Alp....Alpha. Off... Of course A...Alph...pha" She bowed. "Good." He said then stood up. Kayleigh was right beside him. "Have a...a...g...good d...da....day Al... Alpha Lu... Luna." Hayley stammered and Sky nodded once and walked out with Kayleigh beside him. "That was smart," Kayleigh commented when they reached the lot. "What was?" "Keeping me quiet. I mean I'll probably disappear soon. It'll be better if people didn’t know about me. Less messy for your politics." She stumbled when he rounded on her blocking off her personal space. He held her wrist and put her back on the window blocking her personal space. "You really should stop talking about leaving in front of me. It's not helping your case on why I should let you leave and honestly, it's pissing me the hell off." He warned her in a low tone. Kayleigh didn't register anything he said immediately. He was so close. He was usually kissing her when he was this close. But now, she saw his beautiful eyes. A little green with temper. His nose was so straight, had he never fought? She highly doubted it. But Lord was he beautiful. The first thing she realized when his words registered was that he swore. Oh well, so he could do that. Wait what did he just say to her? "How do you think I'm feeling being here against my consent? This is k********g. Look, Wesley, I do not like my free will being messed with. I do not like my life being dictated by some laws or because some higher power somewhere I don't know wants it to be so. While I believe in destiny, I also believe we make our own fate. And right now, the fate I want is not to be here." "And here I thought we were making progress because we shared a meal in peace. But in the end, we are still going in circles." He sighed then moved back. "Let's go." It went against everything she believed in to enter the car. He just manhandled her and now he was commanding her to go with him. If she were where she had a choice, she'd turn around and never speak to him again. Sadly, she sighed, she couldn't do that. Yanking the door open, she slid in, folded her arms in front of her, and looked out the window. It was childish but she was allowed to be childish. "When we get there let's try our best to be as courteous as we were in the restaurant," Sky asked looking towards her. She didn't turn or reply so he just sighed and started the car. It was going to be a long day.
