Devon's POV.
"You really embarrassed me last night Devon"
I lifted my gaze over to Beatrice, my eyes trailing over her with boredom.
I was going to punish the servants that thought they could let her in without my permission.
I continued what I was doing. "What do you want Lady Beatrice?" I asked formally.
A scoff escaped her throat and one look from me made her give a straight face.
"I demand an apology" she said.
It was my turn to scoff.
"An apology?" I parroted.
Beatrice frowned somberly. She always got like this when I scolded her in public. But I know she was even more embarrassed because I did it in front of my pet. Scolding her in the presence of Edgar and Timothy was no new thing, the only thing that infuriated her was that a human of low Calibre withnessed it.
"You embarrassed me my Lord. All I made was one simpy mistake--"
"A mistake?" She shut her mouth, swallowing hard and peering nervously at me. After all these years, it still surprised me how she fidgeted in my presence. I liked it, I liked it a lot.
"I'm sorry my Lord. That didn't come out right" she curtseyed.
I rolled my eyes when she wasn't looking.
"What is it that you want Beatrice. I really don't have time for this"
"You embarrassed me in the presence of your pet my Lord. Only the heavens know how she would be looking down on me wherever she is"
A soft smile spread across my face once I remembered Harriet. If anything Harriet would not even be thinking about her.
I quickly masked the smile before clearing my throat subtlely.
"So is that your problem? That I scolded you in her presence?"
Beatrice nodded and I wondered how she was over 200 years when she still behaved like a child.
"I can't apologize to you. It was a mistake you made. Just because we use to f**k doesn't give you the license to demand an apology from me"
She winced, her eyes glossed over but I could care less. She needed to stop acting like she owned me Everytime we were in a meeting.
"That's not what I'm trying to say-"
"Then what are you saying Beatrice?" I cut her short. "Pray tell me that it isn't because you feel that I'm entitled to you that you barge in here demanding an apology, or that you go around sniffing around my pet and seeking information. You know fully well that if it were to be anyone else, that person would be long dead by now, but you don't think I'd do that to you do you?" I asked calmly.
Beatrice eyes widened, her mouth was parted like she wanted to say something but thought against it.
"I'm sorry my Lord"
Of course she was. It would still happen again so I didn't even bother replying.
"If you don't have anything else to say. You can leave" I went back to my work.
I still felt her presence hovering over me and I peered my face over to her, my brows raised.
"I found some disturbing information about your pet and before you say anything, it was before you warned me against it. You might actually want to hear it my Lord"
My heart skipped but I feigned ignorance. I eyed her carefully, trying to feel her energy. There was no negativity there.
I stretched my hand out to her and she breathed a sigh of relief before placing some files I didn't even see her enter with on my palm.
"I found out that Harriet your pet isn't the real child of her parents. She was adopted when she was born but I still have no information on her birth mother" Beatrice began saying.
I knotted my brows as I studied the information on the file. There was no information of Harriet under her parents column, however there her information laid under the columns for orphans. I furrowed my brows in confusion.
"I have a suspicion that she isn't aware of this fact?" I asked, my eyes still reading.
Beatrice shook her head. "It's appears so my Lord"
My curiosity about her increased. Was that the reason I couldn't read into her mind? Because she wasn't a human? Or because she probably wasn't birthed by one.
My mind was a jumbled mess, but I didn't dare voice this concerns to Beatrice. I was going to ask Edgar to do some more digging into her birth parents.
I shut the files and placed them beside me, I glanced up at Beatrice.
"What do you plan on doing with that little information?"
She looked confused for a second.
"I'm Only trying to help you Devon. There isn't any ulterior motive"
"Hmm. Now that's were I don't believe you" I drawled, standing on my feet and walking across my desk over to her. Her eyes side glanced me but she made no move to shift.
"I know you too well Beatrice to know when there is something you want. And this is an example of those times. You can't fool me" I rasped now close to her ear, my body standing behind her.
Her back arched into me and her breath got caught up in her chest. If she could roll her eyes to the back of her head she would. I wasn't even touching her.
"So tell me. What is in for you?" I whispered into her ear, her neck tilted giving me more room.
"I'm not---" she let out a heavy sigh. "I'm really not after anything. I just--- I was just trying to help"
I tsk into her ear, my hands trailing slowly against her cold skin, goosebumps arising in it's wake.
"Devon" she whimpered. I hummed, my fingers still continuing their movement on her arms, and the other on her neck. She tried to rub her behind with mine but I shifted before she could do it, a frustrated sigh escaping her.
"Please" she begged, for what? I couldn't tell.
"You haven't answered my question" I growled.
A soft groan left her throat, she pried her eyes open before glancing at me over her shoulder.
"I swear----" I didn't let her finish before I was gripping her neck in a tight hold, her words dying in her throat.
"I won't ask again my Lady. What is in it for you?" I growled lowly into her ear, already getting frustrated at her lack of answer.
Her fingers moved to meet my hand wrapped around her neck, her breath coming out ragged.
"I swear----" I clutched tighter, causing her words to stop again. Her eyes shut tightly and she bit her lower lip, a groan sounding like a harrumph coming out from me.
"I just wanted you to look at me the way you use to one last time. I wanted you to thank me and be proud of me"
I released her immediately, taking some few steps back as she hunch over and began coughing, her fingers massaging her neck lightly.
I walked over to my seat, not fully believing her but not saying anything about it.
Her eyes peered over to me, her movements on her neck still there.
"You don't believe me do you?" She asked.
"I'm busy Beatrice, you have to leave" I said instead. My eyes looking everywhere but her.
"What do I need to do to get you to forgive me?" She whispered softly.
I eyed her briefly before averting my gaze back to my paper work.
"There is nothing to forgive" I replied.
She scoffed like what I said was incredulous. "I have apologized time and time again Devon, I have even showed you my loyalty---"
"You were the one who broke that loyalty in the first place Beatrice. There is nothing to forgive" I raised my voice only slightly and her shoulders sagged.
Beatrice was always persuasive and hardly gave up but right now, I was resisting the urge to request that she gets thrown out. I really wasn't in the mood for her bullshit.
"I'm really sorry---"
"Enough!!" I growled loudly. Her eyes shut tightly and she winced.
"Enough Beatrice." I replied more calmly. "I'm grateful for your findings on my pet but you should stop there. It doesn't concern you anymore and you shouldn't give her attitude the next time you see her. Don't go being that overbearing person you normally are especially to my pet, I won't condone it"
She stared at me, hurt evident on her face but I didn't find it in me to care, not anymore.
After what felt like a moment of ignoring her, she sighed heavily and walked out. Immediately she left, I growled audibly. My head hurting and my eyes stinging.
I hated having such conversations with Beatrice, it made me go down memory lane whether I wanted too or not.
A light knock sounded on my door and I had the urge to tell the person to go away but I perceived a very familiar scent, one that was both disturbing and calming.
I said a light come in to her and her head poked in through the door, a light flush to her cheeks. I raised my brows in surprise to her and she smiled tightly before walking in.
I locked my fingers in front of me, I looked up to her as she stood, her eyes scanning everywhere but me.
"Is there something I can help you with Harriet?" I asked when she wasn't saying anything.
I hadn't summoned for her all through the day, letting her do her own thing even though I knew where she was always.
Her eyes widened like they always seem to do around me before she cleared her throat.
"I heard some noise coming from here and I thought to come and check on you."
I lifted my brows again in amusement. She wanted to check on me?
"Is that so? Where did you hear such noise. Your room isn't even close by" I replied incredulously.
"Uh----"
"Relax. I'm kidding" I smirked, her eyes snapped over to me and she smiled lightly, my eyes dwelling on it for longer than necessary.
I kept watching her as she scanned the whole place like she wasn't just here yesterday. My mind going back to the file that was just sitting beside me on my desk and what was in it.
I couldn't understand why her parents had not told her that she was adopted all her life. She deserved to know but it wasn't going to come from me, I didn't even have my facts straight.
Maybe I needed to ask her.
"Harriet?" She stared at me again.
"Come sit" I instructed, standing up and making my way over to the edge of my table. Harriet's eyes widened again but she walked quietly over to the seat.
Once she was sat, I relaxed close to her on the edge of the table and her breathing patterns changed. I couldn't tell if it was because she was scared and nervous around me or because she was attracted to me. I didn't think it was the later, probably the former.
Her eyes peered up at me, the brown of her eyes holding many things that even her wasn't aware of. They were light and bright, the brightest brown eyes I had ever seen on a human.
Her cheeks had a permanent flush to them and she had freckles all over her nose side that wasn't easily seen until you stared this close.
It was the first time I was seeing her in a different light and I could not help but notice how beautiful she was.
Harriet was beautiful and I was just noticing for the first time.
Her curious eyes was scanning me too, I didn't know what was going on in her mind but her energy wasn't that of fear anymore. It was of something else.
"Tell me about your family" I demanded.
Harriet didn't look surprised, she only looked extremely curious making me wonder if she had been expecting my question.
