Strange Questions.

Harriet's POV. "Are you saying I can't see him now?" I asked the servant at Devon's door for the last time. "I'm sorry my lady but he request that he isn't disturbed for the next hour" I gave a resigned sigh before walking away in defeat. Before I could come down the stairs, I sight Lady Beatrice marching up to his study. The servants at the door tries to stop her but she simply pushes them away and walks in. My brows raised in confusion. Where did she even come in from? And why did she look pissed. I ignored the curiousness dancing in my belly and stroll over to my room. However I became restless. I had wanted to ask Devon if I could take a look inside his study. I was done reading all the other books I took out and I wanted to return them and take more. I hadn't see him all morning since yesterday night. He didn't even come for breakfast, when I asked Penn, she said it was normally his routine if he was home. He hardly ate during the day and worked all through. The house was quiet and save to say boring, every one was carrying out their duties to the later, there weren't people lying around to gossip so I could listen. Everyone was fully aware of Lord Devon's presence even though he had been cooped up in his study all day. I walked out of my room again, making my way over to the kitchen to disturb Penn before I heard somewhat loud voices coming from the study. My head swivelled to it's direction and I joined eyes with the servants who stared at me nervously. I wasn't sure Devon would be foolish ad to put a door that wasn't sound proof but it was obvious that something unpleasant was going on there. I wondered about Lady Beatrice. She actually seemed as though she was a nice person only to people she liked, albeit the condescending stares she gave me at dinner which I didn't even find offensive. She was up there and I was down there, I didn't blame her for staring so lowly at me. What I wondered however was her relationship with Lord Devon. Penelope had said they use to date, but from Lord Devon's angle, it didn't even look like they were acquainted before. He spoke to her the way he spoke to any other person, no ex privileges. With the look of pure anger on her face as she marched to his study, I had a gut feeling it was as a result of the dinner last night. I don't think that anger would last long in Devon's presence though. I lingered around the hallway leading to the study, the servants by the door giving me curious glances but I paid them no mind. After what felt like hours, Beatrice came strolling out, her hand wiping the other of her eyes and she marched opposite me. Was there a door back there or something? I made my way over to the servants again, a tight smile spreading across my lips. "Do you think I could maybe see him now?" I mused. One rolled his eyes, and they exchanged eye contact before moving out of the way. I knocked lightly before a low "come in" was heard on the other end, making the hairs on my body stand. I pried the door open to see him slumped on his seat, his whole body occupying it and standing out in the whole room. I averted my gaze away from him, just now realizing that I didn't really have any reason for coming here any longer. "Is there something I can help you with Harriet?" I snapped my eyes to him, my name rolling off his tongue like honey and making a shudder rush through me. My heart was thumping fast under his intense gaze and I just wanted to disappear. Why did you come here in the first place you dunce! I cleared my throat before focusing back on him again. "I heard some noise coming from here and I thought to come check on you". Devon lifted his brows at me, an amused look on his face. He was smirking and I just realized how that sounded. He had taken me away from my family against my will calling me his own; his pet and here I was saying I wanted to check up on him. I guess I hadn't expected to be treated the way I had been ever since I came here. I had thought I'd be locked up in a dungeon, barely giving food and water or seeing sunlight. Instead, I've enjoyed food that I would have not ever tasted in my whole life. I stayed in a mansion like room and I wore the best dresses. Devon's attitude had not been the best earlier but it was better now. I wouldn't say I am comfortable with him, or I had forgotten all he put me and ny family through, but it could have been worse. I also think i could actually make the best out of this, who knows maybe I could help my family by being here. I focused my eyes back to him to see one of his eye lifted amusingly. "Is that so? Where did you hear such noise? Your room isn't even close by" Oh f**k! He'd know I had been lingering around the hallway if he didn't even know already. "Uh---" "Relax I'm kidding." I couldn't describe the relief that flooded me, bringing out a soft smile out of my lips. Devon's eyes watched me, the same intensity with which he stared. I didn't think I could ever get use to it. My eyes averted again from his gaze as I scanned the study. It was really massive as compared to the little room my father had as his back home. There were various books, some well read, which was most and very few looked new. "Harriet?" My head snapped so fast I thought it was going to break. Each time he said my name, it made me weak at the knees, causing my eyes to snap to his lips, staring at it longer than usual. "Come sit" he demanded. He stood up from his sit and made his way over to his desk and relaxed on it, he was not in his usual tailored suit and coat today. He was in a similar shirt as he had on last night, a see through dress shirt that showed his bright skin, even showed where his tattoos laid. His toned arms and muscled peeking out of it in the sunlight. I blushed before making my way over to the sit now in front of him. Devon's eyes were watching my movement and I felt like crumbling there and then. Now sitting, Devon leaned over closer to me at the edge of the table, my breathing hitched and i was sure he noticed the slight change in the pattern of my breathing. I glanced up at him, his eyes meeting mine and causing my cheeks to flush. We were closer than we had ever being, I was certain he could count the number of freckles on my cheeks. Devon kept looking, his eyes sweeping over my features and making me squirm on my seat. I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking, was he thinking of murdering me, or he was looking for ways to suck my blood. I know I said his behavior had changed over the course of time, but maybe I was speaking too early. Maybe all his ploy was to suck me dry and actually throw me in a dungeon that he claimed he didn't have. Stop thinking stupid thoughts Harriet. His eyes didn't look dangerous.... Yet. They looked cold and empty but they also looked sad, however right now he looked extremely curious and I didn't know how, or why but I suddenly had an idea on what he wanted to ask me. "Tell me about your family" he demanded. If he was expecting surprise from me, he wouldn't get one, that was because the question had subtlety passed my mind like a flash. I didn't even know why. All that was on my face was curiosity. Why did he suddenly want to know about my family. Didn't he have like a file on every human they ruled over already? "I.... I don't understand" I spluttered. Devon leaned away from me only slightly. "I want to know about your family Harriet. I'd be asked at the next Vampire's meeting, do you want me to embarrass myself?" He asked playing it cool. I shook my head still dazed from his proximity. "No my Lord" He gave me a look and I quickly moved to apologise. "I'm sorry." He smirked again. "You have a little brother don't you?" A smile formed as I recalled my little brother Harvey, but as soon as that smile came, it was gone to be replaced with a new ache. I missed him so much. I let out a pained sigh, averting my gaze before they turned glossy. I gave Devon a subtle nod and he hummed. "What about your parents? What job do they do?" I wanted to snap at him and say they didn't have any job because of them but I refrained, he was asking with a gentle tone and I could probably find myself far away from the comfort of this place if I tried that. "My mother is a retired teacher and my dad worked for a construction company before he was laid out" "They didn't have any jobs beside those ones?" Devon inquired again. I shook my head, just now finding his inquisitiveness odd but I didn't question it. "And you?" I glanced at him again, almost toppling over with the look in his eyes. No wonder he was feared around here. One look in his eyes would have you begging at his feet. "Me?" I parroted. He used his eyes to answer me not saying anything else. "I um... " "Did you have any difficulty growing up? Any strange event happening at all?" Where was he going with this. "None that I can remember" I said, staring forward and trying to remember my childhood. It passed by me in a blur, me running to school in my oversized dresses as a kid, my socks sticking out of my sandals, mucus running out my nostrils. Or when I had become a teenager, hiding away in my room and applying all sorts of makeup just so the boys at school could notice me. My dad teaching me how to ride a bike severally only for me to fall down my a*s. There was absolutely nothing strange that happened when I was growing up. I peered over to Devon, a little gasp almost escaping me to find his eyes already on me. After a while, he stood up. His musky cologne hitting my nostrils again and fluttering my chest. "I hear that you have been sniffing around my study room pet" all the hairs in my body stood at his nickname. "I..." "I like that you are a reader Harriet. Makes things easier for me" his back was already turned to me increasing my confusion at his words. Making things easy for him? Before I could open my mouth to ask, a knock sounded on his door. Devon peered over at it expectantly. "I'm afraid I'll have to leave on another trip right now. But make yourself comfortable in my study room anytime" he smirked before taking some files and walking away leaving me staring dumbly after him.
