Dining Together.

Harriet's POV. I can not believe I said all I did in Lord Devon's room. I was going to freaking kill Penelope, I know it wasn't her fault but still. She was the reason I found myself in my Lord's bathroom, I had been wiping the cushions when she suggested I cleaned his bathroom instead. I got slightly distracted for a minute, just slightly and i didn't hear when she left the room because I was singing. When I was then ready to leave, the door refused to bulge. I yelled and screamed before Penelope could hear me, after which she promised to get the key but I didn't hear anything from her or Ms Patricia again. I didn't even want to imagine what Lord Devon would have thought hearing me say all I did and finding me in his bathroom. The thought made me want to scream out in embarrassment and disappear. Dinner would soon be served and Penelope was yet to come dress me. Of course I was eating with Lord devon today and for the rest of the week. I wasn't happy in the slightest. I felt a little sense of freedom in his absence, but now that he was going to stay for a week and beyond, I already felt caged. I guess I would have to get books to read in my room after all. No more gardens and sight seeing. "I'm sorry my Lady. I got caught up" Penelope said upon entering my room. She looked exhausted and sweaty. I stood up Immediately to walk over to her. "Are you okay?" I asked her. "Yes" she let out a heavy breath. "I'm fine, we just have a lot to do" "A lot? I thought it was just Lord Devon and I having dinner" I inquired. "Yeah, about that. Lord Devon is having some guest over. He asks that you remain in your Chambers until he calls for you" she said eyeing me warily. "What?" I asked, I didn't know if I was to be excited or worried. "Yeah. Just some of his friends are coming over and he doesn't want them seeing you yet" Penelope explained as she walked around my bathroom already preparing a bath. "Lord Devon has friends?" Penelope glared at me before scoffing. "I'd have you know that my Lord is very much interactive with people and a lot of people want to be his friend" she hissed amusingly. I huffed. "Whatever you say Penn" She scoffed before continuing what she was doing. "How many of them are coming though?" I asked, untying my hair and wrapping it with a towel. I wasn't in the mood to wash it today, the hair kept turning more grey after each wash. "Just three. Lord Edgar, Lady Beatrice and Lord Timothy" "Why did you say her name like that?" "Huh?" Penelope asked confused. "When mentioning Lady Beatrice, you made a grimace" I smirked. "Oh. Her" "Yeah her" I parroted amusingly. Penelope rolled her eyes. She soon began pouring hot water into the bathtub for me. "I just don't like her" she shrugged. "Why?" Penelope sighed tiredly. "She's just the worst female Lady Vampire I had come across but she doesn't ever see anything she does wrong because she and Lord Devon use to date" "Date?" I shrieked out. Penelope silenced me turning left and right as though anyone could hear us in this large house. "I wouldn't really say date. They were more like a fling of some sort" she clarified. I hummed. "And that upsets you because?" I mused. Penelope scoffed. "It doesn't upset me my lady" I hummed dryly and she rolled her eyes again causing laughter to erupt from me. She gave me to go ahead to lay in the tub and I did. "So aren't they together anymore?" I asked further, for some reason I suddenly felt interested in the conversation. I didn't know why, maybe it could explain more into who exactly Lord Devon was. "No. They had a fall out and Lord Devon gets bored of people easily" Penelope replied, her hands palming my shoulders as I scrubbed. "Mhmm I see." There was silence between us before I asked another question. "Do you love Lord Devon?" Penelope's movement on my shoulders ceased, I was certain that if she had something in her mouth, she would have coughed it out. "Of course not!" She replied incredulously. "Took you a while to answer that" I teased. She nudged me lightly making me chuckle. "I'm not in love--" she paused before leaning closer to my ear and whispering. "I'm not in love with Lord Devon" "Okay let's say I believe you. But you are always protective of him, you smile when you speak about him and you don't like when he's sad, how do you explain that?" If I wasn't facing back, I was sure Penelope was rolling her eyes. "I just care about him very much. Contrary to popular opinions, Lord Devon has done a lot of good things for people, me inclusive. I'm grateful for him everyday" There it was again, people talking about him in a different light compared to the way I see him. I didn't dwell on it too much because it would only raise questions that I know I couldn't ask Penelope in my head and it would make me remember my family. I didn't want to cry. "Besides it isn't him I'm in love with anyway" that seemed to clear all thoughts I was having as I peered up at Penelope. A genial smile on my face, our eyes met and she blushed. "Would you look at that! Who is it then?" I asked already excited. "It's Lord Devon's brother. Lord Luca" confusion arose in my head again. "He has a brother?" Penelope hummed. "Where is he then!" "Out schooling" she replied without missing a beat. "Schooling?" Penelope didn't get a chance to answer because soon a knock was sounding on my door. "You have fifteen minutes to get ready. Lord Devon awaits your presence" it was Ms Patricia. My stomach sank. Penelope and I increased our speed. She helped me find one of those obnoxious gowns I was always requested to wear. This one was better than the rest and it was black. It wasn't a ball gown to which I was grateful for, it was shiny and was straight cut. It had a little slit that rested on my left thigh and it had a corset neck and waist line. It looked pretty but it was making my chest almost spill out of my dress. I had complained to Penelope how I couldn't wear this but Ms Patricia suddenly bursted in to the room, just one single look from her made all my words fly out of my head. My hair was fixed again in a high ponytail, my root hairs were still black so leaving it to fall was making it looks worse. Penelope then suggested tying it up which looked better. I was shitting bricks as we made our way out of the room and into the dining halls. Dining with Lord Devon was already nerve wrecking, then add his friends with him and I was almost passing out. I didn't know what to expect and that was causing my stomach to churn. I soon heard laughter as we got closer to the halls, Ms Patricia stood out and spoke out. "My Lord. Lady Harriet is here!" After which I was asked to walk in. Pin dropping silence was all that was heard as I walked in. I didn't make contact with anyone until I had my a*s down on the chair a servant had pulled out for me. I could feel eyes watching me, especially that of Lord Devon. His was the most nerve wracking of all. I could hear the ringing of my heart and my hands were trembling. I didn't know why I was this nervous. "Are you lots not going to say anything? You are making her nervous" Devon growled out, Immediately, the Lords and Lady began talking. I snapped my eyes to him to find him already watching me, his face set in a tight frown. After some few minutes, he released his eyes from me and faced his food. I used my eyes to scan the room, two Lord were sitting on his left, and the lady who I assume to be lady Beatrice was sitting by my side. She was extremely gorgeous and had lovely skin, she looked caked on her face and I assumed it to be too much makeup. She didn't need it in my opinion but it wasn't my business. The other two Lord's were handsome but I wasn't expecting anything less, they were vampires after all. They all seemed to be in some sort of close circle. I stared at the food before me, seemingly not finding the appetite in me to eat anything, not with how loud my belly was screaming in nerves. I wished to be anywhere but right here. My name was soon called causing me to lift my eyes to find that of Lord Devon. His fingers were locked together on the table, causing his rings to shine under the chandelier. He looked really good. I remembered what transpired in his room, how he found me in his bathroom and how I almost saw him undress. His bare chest and the tattoo I saw poking out from his unbuttoned shirt. It caused a slight blush to appear on my cheeks but I shoved it away. "Meet my friends. Over here is Lord Edgar and Lord Timothy" he pointed to the two men by his left side. I sent a shy smile to them. Lord Timothy smiled back but Lord Edgar winked at me, my blushed cheeks increased. "This is Lady Beatrice" Devon's voice pulled me out causing me to turn to the lady beside me. She eyed me with a straight face for a few minutes before a tight smile spread across her cheeks. "Nice to meet you" she stretched her hands to me. I eyed her, her hand and Lord Devon. He gave me a subtle nod causing me to swallow nervously before taking lady Beatrice hand in mine. Even her hands were soft. We released each other and I turned back to my food but Beatrice didn't stop staring at me. I turned back to her and her face was set in a tight frown causing me to raise my brows in confusion. "Do you have a problem with my pet lady Beatrice?" Devon growled. I lifted my gaze to him and he was staring languidly at her. Lady Beatrice removed her eyes from me and plastered a fake smile over to Devon. "Of course not my Lord. But I do have a question" Lord Devon almost rolled his eyes but he disguised it as a twitch. "Of course" "May I ask in what city your pet was bought from?" Lady Beatrice turned to me again and I averted my gaze immediately. "Her face is a strange one, seeing as I know all the ladies faces in every city. I'm surprised how hers hadn't come to me" If I didn't know better, I'd say Lord Devon looked frightened for a second but it only lasted for a second before he relaxed in his chair and turned to her. "Do you think I would have brought in a pet you knew Lady Beatrice?" There was a snicker and i turned and it was coming from Lord Edgar. Beatrice clenched her fist tightly. "I'm only asking because---" "You are only asking because you searched and you didn't get any information on her, now you want to find out her city so you could do more digging isn't that right Lady Beatrice" Devon asked coolly. Beatrice looked red in the face, she opened her mouth to say something but Devon stopped her. "The information on my pet is no one's concern but mine. You need to stop forgetting that cos I won't remind you again." He growled lowly, a signal to end the topic. Beatrice swallowed, her hands clenching and unclenching beside her. I couldn't even explain how she must be feeling, Lord Devon wasn't speaking to me but I was shaking on her behalf. He didn't even look angry. He looked as though he was having a conversation. Just the way he did over at my house. What if he was indeed angry? "Now enough of my pet. We ought to be discussing business here" And I couldn't have been more grateful that I wasn't noticed anymore for the rest of the night.
