Devon's POV.
The deep crunching of the dry leaves under our feet was all that could be heard as we made our way over to the forest. It was the early mornings and it was evident by the subtle chilly wind and the chirping birds.
I had travelled all night only to receive another news that caused me to return immediately.
Another vampire had been killed.
The body had been found last night by the security and I had requested that it be left there until I could see it.
Vampire killings had been a reoccurrence for months now. Of course humans were ruled out seeing as vampires were more powerful than they were but I was still yet to find out who was responsible.
We got closer to the body and I took my time to examine it, myself and Edgar while my men searched the place for anything else.
"Looks recent" Edgar noticed.
I hummed. I bent over, my elbow resting on my knee as I searched the body. It was burnt from head to toe making it difficult to tell who the vampire was and what exactly killed them. That was obviously the killers plan, burn the body and it would be hard to trace the cause of death.
I used my power of energy to look into the deceased life but I saw nothing. Over the cause of the time, I had been able to see events and strings of activities that took place in the lives of the dead Vampire's bodies up until their death.
This however was strange, I couldn't see anything and I was as though it's energy was blocked. One thing I could tell was this was a newly turned Vampire.
He was a human before who just turned to a vampire and also happened to be killed. It was obvious as well that the deceased vampire didn't know the kind of power it had, it shouldn't have been this easy to kill him.
"Do you see anything?" Edgar asked me.
I stood back on my feet.
Shaking my head, I twisted my tongue in my mouth as I thought.
"His energy is blocked" I replied.
"Blocked?" Edgar parroted.
I glanced over at him, his face was set into a tight frown.
"Yeah. Blocked. But he was a newly turned Vampire. Didn't have too much strength" I replied.
"Well all the more reason why you should see into his energy" Edgar argued.
"I know that. But this wasn't done by the killer. This look as if it was a simply mistake made by someone and the person decided to burn him just like the other bodies to shift attention and make it look like the killer" I was sure of that.
This killer was a vampire. A vampire killed his fellow mate and made it look like it was the other killer that I was sure wasn't a vampire.
"Wow" Edgar exclaimed.
"How do you know that!"
I scoffed. "Are you really asking me that?" I smirked.
Edgar simply huffed finding my triumphant smirk amusing.
"Only vampires have the ability to suck energy. The killer of this body was frightened that he would be caught, he must have been more powerful to be able to suck his own energy and clear his memories. It also look as though it was from strangulation which is quite confusing....." I trailed off.
"Confusing? Why?" Edgar questioned.
"If it's from strangulation then calling it a mistake might be an error. It's possible he was dragged out here to be killed" I replied, my face set in a tight frown as I thought.
"Well this was helpful mate. I'll tell all I've found to the security in charge" I nodded at his words, still staring at the body.
"Who is in charge of this turf?" I asked, shifting my eyes from the body over to the forest.
"Lady Palmer"
"We might want to question her first"
____
I was drained and exhausted.
I had sent words to Ms Patricia through my bird that I was coming over. I hadn't taken my phone out with me, I never did when I was going for business trips. It always seved as a form of distractions to me and I didn't want that.
"Lady Patricia requests your presence my Lord" i nodded at him and he curtseyed.
I found Patricia in the kitchen and she gave me a soft smile, her two hands resting on her stick.
"My Lord" she greeted.
"Ms Patricia. Is my bathe ready?" I asked taking an apple from the fruit bowl.
"Yes my Lord" I nodded and turned to leave but her voice stopped me.
"My Lord"
"Is there anything else?" I asked.
"Lady Harriet awaits in your Chambers"
I raised my brows as I remembered actually telling her to wait for me in my Chambers when I was coming. I let out a heavy sigh. I wasn't in the mood to see anyone today.
"Let her know she can leave. I don't need her services anymore"
Ms Patricia pursed her lips and I squinted my eyes in confusion.
"What is it Patricia?" I growled.
"I'm sorry my Lord, but lady Harriet seemed to have encountered a problem and is trapped in your Chambers my Lord"
"T-Trapped?" I parroted.
Ms Patricia simply curtseyed not replying me any longer.
I scoffed before walking away and striding over to my Chambers.
Harriet never ceased to surprise me. How was she even trapped. I don't even understand.
Ms Patricia has a spare key to my room and would have easily let the door open to her.
I got to my Chambers and the room doors were opened, not locked. I walked in but I didn't find anyone here.
About to walk out back to Patricia, I heard screaming and cussing.
"I swear Penelope, if you don't open the door right now, I'll break it and make sure to tell Devon to give your salary to the birds. ..... f*****g hell" I snorted out laughing, quickly going to cover my mouth so she didn't know I was outside.
I moved to pry the door open but she continued making me stop,
"Penn. I'm really sorry, you know I could never do such thing. I can't even stand before Devon more or less speak about your salary to him. He freaking scares me. Just open the door alright? Devon will soon be back, c'mon"
I always knew she was scared of me but hearing her say it didn't make me feel good. I liked when people say they were scared of me, especially in the vampire world, fear was one major weapon you could use in getting whatever you wanted. I didn't know why hearing her say she was scared of me didn't make me feel that satisfaction.
I also realized she had called me by my name. i didnt feel angry only intrigued. My name sounded different coming her lips.
I had heard enough of her whining, I twisted the handle of the door with my powers without touching it and the door pried open.
"Oh thank f**k. I owe you one. I swear, I almost died in there Pen---"
A gasp so loud came out of her throat, her hands moving to cover her mouth and her eyes were wide opened.
"I want to know how you found yourself locked in there but I'm not even going to ask" I said before turning and marching into my closet.
A soft smile was pulling at my lips and no matter how much I wanted to control it, I just couldn't stop smiling.
I wished I could read her mind, I was fully convinced she would be swearing heaven and Earth on herself and wishing the ground would swallow her. I knew I would have had a filled day once I saw it.
I pried my coat off my body, going for my suit jacket next, my tie followed and then I unbuttoned my dress shirt.
About to pry my shirt off my shoulders, I heard another tiny gasp. I snapped my head to find Harriet's eyes shut tight and her lips pursed in a tight line.
I smirked before placing the shirt back on my shoulders, but not making any moves to button it.
I walked over to her.
"Is there a reason you are in here?" I drawled
She opened her eyes slowly before staring me down and then shutting her eyes again. I had never seen a woman as bold and shy at the same time as she was.
"Are you going to speak?" I growled. She snapped her eyes open and kept it on my face.
"Yeah sorry Dev- s**t sorry my Lord" she curtseyed and her eyes glanced over to my bare stomach again before shutting her eyes.
"Do you have something to say?"
She raised her head up.
"I wanted to apologise for finding myself in your bathroom, it wasn't intentional. I had been cleaning and didn't know when Penelope left the room, I was singing until I found out the door had jammed and couldn't open it again, Penelope and Ms Patricia tried, but they had said they were going to find the key and no one returned until you came home." She took a deep breath after she had finished rambling.
"You were singing when you ought to be cleaning?" I was messing with her at this point but she didn't need to know that.
Harriet's eyes widened.
"I'm sorry my Lord. I'm really sorry" she chanted bowing down and up three times.
"You know what? Just leave" I replied, sounding angry even though not feeling it. I needed her to leave so I could laugh properly. I was holding it in and it was getting harder to stand staring at the cuteness of her face with a straight face.
"What? No. I'm not leaving" I raised my brows to her. "No I mean-- I can't leave like that, I need to know you have forgiven me. Please I don't want to be thrown in a dungeon"
"Dungeon?" I muttered.
"Huh? I thought--"
"Ms Patricia!" I bellowed, Harriet flinched, slight fear passing her eyes.
Patricia answered with her large ears and before you could tell, she was in my presence.
"Yes my Lord"
"Can you kindly let Harriet here know that we have no such thing as dungeons? What are we? The 1900s?"
Ms Patricia stared at me puzzled, I gave her a nod towards Harriet's direction. She cleared her throat and then turned back to Harriet that was staring flummoxed at me.
"My lady. There is no such thing as dungeons in this city"
"Really?" Harriet whispered, her cheeks had tainted color and she looked highly embarrassed.
"Please take Ms Harriet and leave. I'll like to be alone right now" I didn't wait for them before I was turning and walking back into my closet.
I could feel Harriet's eyes on me but it didn't stay long before Patricia was pulling her away.
Once they were out of my sight, I let loose the laughter I had been holding. An eye crinkling, belly tumbling laughter.
Who knew I would ever find someone to make me laugh after all.
Harriet was something else.
