Harriet's POV
I couldn't stop thinking about all what Devon had said during dinner few nights ago.
It had been six days since then and I had not seen him. I had just be lounging around, being treated like a princess. The downside of it all was I was never allowed to go out.
I had not fully wrapped my head around all the instructions Devon had requested from me that night. I had so many questions to ask but Penelope had been too busy lately with Ms Patricia. If she even came around to dress me, it was under Ms Patricia's scrutiny so we weren't allowed to speak much.
I was getting bored out of my mind with the same routine I was now keeping.
Waking up no matter the time of the day, getting dressed by Penelope and Ms Patricia, just like Devon said, I was allowed to choose my clothes since he was not around. Breakfast would be served and I'd be called down to eat, afterwards I had another time to myself to simply sleep, wakeup and sleep again. I was getting mad with boredom until Penelope had suggested I went down to the film house to watch movies.
I was blown away by the fact that there was an actual cinema in this house. That was where I spent most of my time until lunch is served, I go back to eat, even offering to wash the dishes but the look Ms Patricia gives me always sends me scrambling.
I go back to the film house or cinema depending on who you ask and watch a lot of movies I would never have thought I could watch in all my life. I was soon getting bored of watching movies all the time so I decided to explore each time I was free.
The house was massive, and the servants were always changed, the only constant was Penelope, Ms Patricia, Marcus, Jordan and the cleaner. Every other person that worked here was changed the next day. It was as though they worked in shift.
It still surprised me that everyone of them were humans like me, they looked content, satisfied and even privileged to be working for Lord Devon which somehow sparked my curiosity.
I wondered why that was. None of them looked as though they would rather be doing something else than working here, unlike me. I hated the moment I woke up to the moment I slept back in the middle of the night in this house.
Escaping had come to my head more times than I could count but it was always impossible. Not when they were over a hundred guards watching over the house. I couldn't even escape even if the gate was spread wide for me, I couldn't put my my family and Harvey in danger.
My exploring continued, I found the library that had lots and lots of books I would have only dreamt to have on psychology and the mind. It made me wonder what interest Devon had in psychology. There were alot of books on vampires creatures too. There was also a lot of books on science and mathematics, all the books looked well read and had either a writing with pen or pencil in them.
I smiled each time I encountered them, the writings looked old but it was still clear and neat. I wondered if Devon was the one responsible for all these. It made me curious as to what type of man he was.
I had picked few books to take to my room with Ms Patricia's consent of course and I had been reading them ever since. There were nice novels too.
I also took turn in going through the open rooms in the house, a few were locked and under guards watch causing a frown to spread across my face. I wondered what they were hiding but I never let it show.
The ones that were opened were simply rooms that were not used, there was a painting room, a room that had all the instrument in the world. That had fascinated me and I remembered spending hours in it.
There was a swimming pool also, one I didn't think I would use, not with all the men that were in this house. There was a gym as well, the gym been the biggest of all the rooms I had encountered.
It had all the instrument that you could imagine and I imagined Devon being in here 24/7 to get the shape that he had now.
I had been met with the garden as well, that had been where I spent most of my days here, reading, eating or watching movies in the pad Penelope lent to me. Of course I couldn't use it to make any calls because the network in this city was completely different from Sinda's. My parents also lost their phones years ago.
So here I was, in the garden again, my head deep inside vampire and human story. I didn't hear anyone come in until I heard Penelope's voice.
"Here you are!" I've been searching for you all day"
I turned my head to her, I shut my book, folding the page so I wouldn't get confused.
"You have?" I smiled happy that she was here.
Penelope had been the one that had helped me not loose my mind in this house. It was nice to have a girl my age, especially one as gorgeous as she was. She had soon become my friend and she made living here easy for me.
"Yeah. What are you doing?" She asked, her eyes glancing down at my book briefly.
I shrugged. "Just reading"
"You remind me of my Lord" she replied, a soft smile dancing on her lips.
"I do?" I parroted.
Penelope hummed before staring forward.
"He loved to read. Each time we found him, he was head deep in a book of some sort" she smiled at the memory.
I wondered how they all saw him. While I saw him as a ruthless, unforgiving and unkind person, here was Penelope smiling as she remembered something that had to do with him.
The other day two other ladies were gushing about how their Lord looked ravishing in the tabloids, Patricia when dishing out work to the servants always spoke about him in high regard.
It made me wonder if I wasn't seeing the real Devon or he was just that way to me. The thought pang my heart, I didn't know why.
"Why is it in past tense?" I asked after wards.
Penn looked down to her fingers. "A lot of things happened to him since then. A lot of duties and responsibilities fell unto his lap and he hardly had time for himself nor time to do what he loved doing anymore" she had a sad smile on her face making me wonder what she felt about Devon.
Was she in love with him or something?
I didn't ask though. It wasn't my business.
"Anyways. I was told to call you" Penelope stared over at me, her usual bright smile now present.
"Call me?" I reiterated, my heart already thumping with nerves.
Penelope noticed. "Lord Devon is on his way back my Lady." She didn't need to say much, I was already up on my feet and walking in. My shoulders were tensed and my heart was beating rapidly.
I was expected to clean his Chambers and be there before he comes back. I hadn't even gone there all these six days. I didn't know what I was supposed to do in there. I was a nervous wreck.
I walked briskly through the back door and over to the kitchen where Ms Patricia was.
She glanced at me over her shoulder and I gulped hard. She never smiled at me, her face was always set in a tight frown making her even more scarier than Lord Devon sometimes.
"I suppose Penelope has told you? Lord Devon is on his way and his Chambers ought to be cleaned. But because it was an impromptu call, Penelope will assist you in cleaning it. You have just two hours" I let out a grateful sigh, my lips smiling. I opened my mouth to say thank you but Ms Patricia stopped me.
"What are you still doing here? Get moving!" I scurried away immediately, Penelope jogging behind me. I let her lead the way seeing as I knew not where the Chambers were.
The room was the amongst the few on the third floor, the highest floors in the house, a floor I had not been allowed to go on. There were just three doors on it, the other two were locked according to Penelope and the one in the middle was his Chambers.
Penelope fisted a key from her chest and unlocked the room. She entered and I followed after her. I let out a gasp at the beauty the room had.
It was gigantic. It was as though this was a house of its own in here. The bed of course took the majority of the space, it's size to be kinged. There were cushions of several designs all in black color, the handles were golden and it looked quite expensive I wondered if they were real gold.
A huge chandelier much like the one in my room was hanging far above the bed, the ceilings took my breath away, it was made of glass, several glass and I stared up to be met with my reflection staring up at me.
There were three stairs leading into the room, the tiles were reflecting too but they weren't glass. There was a floor to ceiling window behind his bed and the view was amazing. You could see almost the whole city from here. I took steps into the room and there were so many other beautiful things, just so many things.
His closet was bigger than the one I had in my room, way bigger and there were different arrays of well tailored suits there in different colors, but all I had ever seen him wear was black or grey. Another thing to be curious about.
"We should start cleaning my lady. As you can see, the room is massive and would take more than two hours. We also need to get you dressed before he comes" Penelope pulled me out of my daze.
"Yeah of course" I replied absentmindedly.
"Who was cleaning this room before though?" I asked as Penelope and I began dusting some places. It wasn't even dirty, everything was squeaky clean making me wonder why he demanded I cleaned it.
"Lord Devon cleaned it himself" Penelope replied.
"What?" I shrieked. Penelope jerked up, she stared up at me with wide eyes.
"What is it?" She asked
"No! I mean. Sorry, I didn't mean to shout like that. But why does he clean his room himself?" I asked.
Penelope let out a heavy sigh.
"He just doesn't like people entering his room"
"Then what are we doing here?" I asked confused.
Penelope left me and began cleaning, she changed the bedspread and the duvet.
"I have no idea why he asked you to be in charge of his room my Lady. Ms Patricia doesn't know too. We all found it strange. Even Ms Patricia hardly enters here when he's around to clean. He always insist in doing it himself, it's only when he isn't around that Ms Patricia takes over" she explained.
My head was spinning with so many questions but just like Penelope said, we didn't have time.
I sighed, shoving my questions down for later and joined her.
