Chapter 5

1407 Words
“So why did you run away?” “None of your business,” I scoff. “Alright, fair.” I turn to keep walking down the path I’m on. “Where are you going, Kaya?” “Away.” I say bluntly. “No sh*t.” “Humph.” “Getting sassy, are we?” “Shut up!” He stays quiet, but I can feel him following me. Why won't he leave me alone? I stop and face him. “Why are you following me?” “To keep you safe.” “I don’t need your protection!” “Yes, you do.” “No. I. Don’t!” “So, you can handle a vampire who wants nothing more than to drink your blood without a second thought?” “Well, I'm handling you just fine, aren't I?” “That's different, Kaya, I'm not like the rest of em’ i have self-control.” “Good for you, bye!” I say giving the peace sign and walking away, again. “It’s not safe in these woods at night.” “So what?” “So, you need my help. That is if you want to survive.” “Well, what do you suggest I do hmm? Going home isn’t an option, and obviously, staying here won’t do me any good.” “Well, you could come stay with me.” “Seriously?” “Yeah.” “And how is that any better?” “Because I know you.” “And what happens if you get hungry hmm?” “I go out to hunt.” He says with a straight face. “So, you won’t be tempted to suck my blood?” “I’ll be tempted, but I won’t do it, not without permission first.” I sigh. Is this really what my life has come to? Running away from home, running into my old best friend who I thought moved away but actually died and became a vampire, to having the option of either trying to survive the night in the woods that could be crawling with vampires or living with one? F*ck me! "Well, if that’s my only option." “It's not your only option, it’s just your best one.” "Well, to be honest, I don’t know what I want to do. I just left my family, I can’t go back to school now, my life is honestly over!" I say about to cry. "Well, Kaya, your life isn’t over till you die, then die again...” And just like that he disappears. "Great, so now I’m in the woods alone with nowhere to go." I fall onto the ground and bury my head in my hands. What the actual f*ck just happened? I thought he wanted to help me! I mean, I know I was being a bit of a b*tch but what did he expect? I haven't seen him in literal years? Did he really expect me to just treat him like nothing had happened? Like he didn't change? He literally left me all alone, back then and now. If he offered me to live with him, why did he run off? As*hole! I get up and start walking again. No point in staying in one place, he was right about one thing: it's not safe in the forest at night. It’s been a few hours since I left my house and the sky is getting much darker. If I had to guess, I’d probably say it’s around 10 o'clock at night. Wonderful. I keep walking, always checking behind me to make sure I'm not being followed. It's a little hard considering the lack of light, but it is what it is. I continue looking around trying to find a nice spot to lay down and get some sleep. If that bast*rd left me in the woods, then I might as well make it work, prove to him and everyone else I can survive on my own. Just as I'm about to give up, I see a nice little clearing. I head into the clearing and find a beautiful willow tree in the center. I take off my bag and start searching through it to try to find the blankets I packed. I put the thinner blanket on the ground with my jacket and placed my bag against the trunk of the tree to use as a pillow. I never once thought that this would be so comfortable, yet when I lay down and look at the sky through the branches of the willow tree, I feel a sense of calm wash over me. I close my eyes and slowly drift off to sleep. ***Next morning*** I wake up to the sound of birds chirping and footsteps... I quickly get up and put everything into my bag as fast as I possibly can and book it into the nearby bushes. "Kaya, I brought you some food! Come out from your little hiding spot, I know you're here, I saw you run!" That voice. I know it, yet I can’t exactly place it. "Kaya it’s me! Do you want food or not?" With that I hop out of the bushes and scared the living sh*t out of Xavier. "Yes, I'm hungry and how did you know I was here?" I asked him to take the food out of his hands. "Well... I sort of followed you here to keep an eye on you. Wanted to make sure no other vampires came after you. When I saw you sleeping on the ground, I decided to get you food. I know you were probably too p*ssed off last night to even think about packing some." How can he be both a ginormous jacka*s and yet so sweet at the same time? "What? What did I do this time?" "You f*cking left me alone in the woods! I could have died you, a*shole!" “Didn’t you hear when I said I stayed here to make sure that didn’t happen?” “Last night you said I could stay with you! Then you disappeared! What the hell?” “Sorry, you seemed so unsure, I didn’t want to force you into anything.” He says while running his hand through his thick black hair. "I don’t deserve to have you here supporting me like you are! I left all my friends behind, yet you're still here." I say sobbing. "Well, you could take up my offer and start new." He says. “You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.” "No.” I say wiping my tears. “I want to see where this takes me, how far I can make it on my own." "On your own? Really? But you just found out I'm still here! Don't you want to see what life could be like now that we are back together? We were best friends once. We could still be if you gave it a shot." "Well fine, I want to see how far I can make it with you helping me. Better?" "Yup now let’s go find you a nice place to stay." "But I like it here!" "You could get found here!" "True...” "How about you stay with me at my place?" "You know what? Sure, why not?" "Seriously?” “Yup, staying with you is better than dying in a forest.” I say flatly. “Gee, Thanks.” “Welcome!” I say with a smile. “You were planning on following me the entire time, weren't you?” He sighs. “Yup.” “Alright, let's go, but I'm warning you my place isn’t much..." "I'm not too picky at this point. Considering the alternative, I'll take my chances." "Good. Let's go." I look over at him, then at my bag. “What?” “Can I change before we head off? I’ve been in this for a full day and I don’t feel like staying like this for long.” He laughs. “Sure Kay. Go change, I’ll wait here.” I stop for a second. “What did you just call me?” “Kay… is that not ok? I used to call you that all the time. I guess it's just habit.” “It’s fine.” I laugh. “I just haven’t been called that since you left.” “Oh,” He says as he chuckles.
