*Quick note and trigger. There is a emotional trigger regarding loss in this chapter and may not be suitably for some people. Also everything in this story is fiction.*
Kate's point of view (Emma's mom)
For the past five hours Emma has been having some weird vital signs. Her heart rate would rise and then fall very quickly. The doctors have been monitoring her closely, preforming test and yet they are still stumped on what could be causing this. I'm so afraid I will lose her.
My husband had to return to work today despite what is happening to Emma but he has his phone close. I wish he was here but he is working on a big project for work.
As the hours tick by I can't help but to feel alone. For the past two hours Emma has been stable and sinc I have not eaten I decide it's time to go and get coffee and a sandwich. I stop by the nurses station and inform them were I was going. I decided I would go to the small shop on the main floor since the cafeteria was a bit of a walk and the little shop was right next to the elevator. I ordered a large coffee with two creams and two sugars and an everything bagel, toasted with cream cheese. Then I made my way back to Emma's room.
As the elevator doors open I walk down the hallway and turn left. What I saw caused me to drop my coffee and bagel and mad dash to Emma's room. Doctors and nurses were rushing into her room and the light above was blue. When I saw the light I felt my heart sink and fear rose in my body. As I approached the room and stood in the door way I saw the doctors trying to revive her. The heart monitor no longer showed signs of a beating heart but it was a straight line. My Emma, my baby is dead.
I fell onto my knees and screamed her name as tears pooled down my eyes. I watched as one of the doctors started using paddles on her to try and get her heart to beat but it did not start. He did it three more times and then he looked down.
"Time of death eleven thirty am." He said as he handed the paddles to the nurse next to him. My baby was gone.
Tears were falling down my face and I felt dead inside. Levi had tried for years to have a child but we could not and decided to try adoption.
We were watching the news one night when Emma's story appeared on the local news channel and I just knew she was meant to be are child. We contacted are adoption case worker and she made it happen. Emma was ares in less then two months and just like that she was gone. I began to sob harder and I felt one of the nurses trying to help me up off the floor. The young nurse helped me over to Emma's bed and I just stood there looking at her. She was perfect.
"How?" I asked the doctor and he looked at me.
"I'm sorry for your loss. All of are test came back normal. What caused this I am not sure." He said.
"She was a healthy seventeen year old girl. I need to know what happened." I screamed.
Beep, silence, beep I quickly looked over at the monitor and there were small lines indicating a heart beat. "What the." The doctor said and he took out his stethoscope and placed on her chest. The doctor began to shout orders but I just kept looking at the monitor. Her heart was beating and getting stronger. I heard a large gasp for breath come from Emma and I looked at her. All of a sudden her emerald green eyes were looking around the room.
"Emma. Emma. Emma." The doctor said but she just kept looking around the room and then all of a sudden she looked at me.
"I remember" she whispered and then she began to have convulsions. She began to have a white foam coming from her mouth as the doctor and nurse rolled her over to her side. The heart monitor was going crazy.
"Help her." I screamed. I did not want to lose her again. I backed away as the doctors and nurses began to work on her. I pulled my phone out and texted Levi.
'You need to get to the hospital NOW!!!!' Several seconds passed by and I felt my phone buzz.
'On my way. What is happening?'
'She flat lined but after they called a time of death her heart began to beat again. Now she is having a siezer. I can't do this without you. '
'Be there in ten.' He texted back.
I just stood there and watched them. Just as Levi arrived they had her stable and the doctor walked over to us. "Kate, Levi she is not out of the woods yet. As for what is causing this i have no clue. I will be having a meeting with several other doctors to see what they have to say." The doctor said.
"Thank you doctor. Will Emma be transferring rooms or wards?" My husband asked.
"Yes she will taken to the icu. Unfortunately you guys can not be with her for more then an hour here and there." I felt more tears in my eyes. "This ward has more staff on call and she will receive the extra care she needs."
"Thank you doctor " my husband said.
"If you have any questions please let the nurses know. Ill be meeting with my other colleagues in about an hour." He said and walked away.
I grabbed Levi's hand. "I'm scared honey."
I felt him squeeze my hand and said " I am too honey but we are in this together." And I looked up and smiled him, he was right.
