My house had no other exit so I had no where to go. The windows were grilled and so I definitely couldn't jump out. I had to find a way to defend myself against the two men. I rushed to the kitchen to look for a weapon but what could I possibly get that would beat a gun with bullets? As I was still trying to find a weapon, they were banging by the door and trying to find their way in. I ran to the store, I remember seeing some metal rodes there that were used in the building of the house. I checked and found a good one that could leave a dent in someone's head. I didn't know what was going on but it's obvious that someone wanted me dead. Not someone but Lorna and Jade. How did they even plan all these behind jail? I got the rode and before I could run back to the door, I heard the door kicked in and the two goons walked in. From the store I could hear them talking and dividing themselves so that they could easily find me. I peeped on the key hole and I saw both of them head towards the bedrooms, I wanted to slowly open the door and take off but then again if the door made any noises, I would definitely be dead because for starters I couldn't out run a bullet. "She is in not here" I heard one of them say after he missed me in one of the bedrooms. I thought of calling the police but why would I call the same people I was running from. I was in a fix and I didn't know what move to make next. I was afraid for Ndegwa and I was just hoping that he was not dead. What reason would those people have for killing him anyway?.. I heard them go to the kitchen and that was way close to the store. I strongly held the rode in my hand waiting to break the head of whoever walked in first and before they could, I heard one of their phones ring and one of the guys received it then talked for a while and told whoever was calling that I was no where to be found. I could not hear what the person from the other end was saying but it's like they were told to abort the mission and leave the house because the next thing I heard was the guy who was on call telling the other one that they had to leave. I took a deep breath and after I heard the door close, I dropped the rod and was a bit shaken. desperate times call for desperate measures they said and even though I was holding that rod in my hand the entire time, I didn't know if I could really bring myself to hit anyone. I quickly got up and rushed to the window to check if the guys were gone and their car was not there. We lived in such a funny neighborhood, these rich guys fear gunshots that when the guys fired shots, everyone locked themselves in thinking there was a robbery and what's shocking is no one really cared to call the police. Not that I wanted them to but how ignorant could people be?... I opened the door and ran out and the first place I was going to check was ndegwa's car, I wanted to know if Ndegwa was alive, he had to be alive. When I got there, Ndegwa was lying there almost lifeless. His shirt was soaked in blood and he was having a hard time breathing. He was still in my compound so despite people hearing gunshots, no one was out there.. Ndegwa: I need to tell you something.. Me: I need to get you to the hospital.. I tore his shirt to see if I could put pressure on his wound but the wound was already swollen and there was nothing I could do about it. I couldn't drive and I didn't know how to help Ndegwa, I couldn't call anyone because me being there was illegal in the first place. I didn't have friends. Ndegwa pulled my arm and I looked at him. He was struggling to breath and I don't know but I smelt death in him and he reminded me of my father on his death bed. Before my father died, I had a face to face conversation with him and he died in my arms. Ndegwa: you need to get out of here. Right now.. Me: why what's going on? Ndegwa: Melvin is not who you thought he was... That woman Jade.. Me: what about Jade? Ndegwa: get out of here.... Do it right now. Me: I can't leave you like this.. Ndegwa was getting mad, and he was pushing me to get away and I didn't know why until I heard a car coming towards me. I turned around and I saw the same car that I had seen a few minutes then. I saw one of the guys pull out a gun So I rolled on the ground then got up and ran behind ndegwa's car and the bullets hit the car instead... The windows shattered and before they could stop and come at me I found my way out of the gate and raced down the road. Ndegwa had been asking me to leave because he was warning me of the guys that had been in my house earlier. I heard the car turn around and I knew they were definitely trying to catch up with me.. Back at the police station Lorna and Jade were seated in the far corner of the room having a discussion about Benta. Lorna pulled out a phone from underneath her skirt and handed it to Jade then she got up to go and check if the cops were coming and it was all clear, she went back to hade who was going through the messages on the phone. Jade: they didn't find her at the house. Lorna: I heard the cop say she had escaped from the hospital with the help of that guy who usually drive her around. Jade: ndengwa? Lorna: yes. Jade: how did Ndegwa know about her being taken to the hospital, do you think she made plans with him to escape by cutting her wrist?.. Lorna: that witch can do anything but it's a good thing she is out there alone. When she get killed by your guys, we will have not played any part in it. Do you think they have killed her by now? Jade: I don't know. They would have texted already. Let's wait and see. It's just Benta, it can't be that hard to put her down. It's two well trained men verses a poor orphan. She gave the phone to Lorna and she hid it again. When the police were checking them for any dangerous weapons before they were allowed inside the cell, the police did not get the phone or maybe they just knew about it but they looked the other way. I ran and found myself behind some tree on someone's gate.. I hid behind that tree and when I heard the car pass, I peeped and saw the guys, they were looking around with their guns pointed outside the window ready to gun me down. After they passed I called Ndegwa on his phone and he was not picking and as much as I thought of going back, I could not because by the way the guys were patrolling. I knew they would be back. They knew Ndegwa's life was in danger and being human I had to go back. I found my way away from the estate and I needed to get to Betty's house. Ndegwa must have been dead by then because from the look of things, he was not going to survive. My worry was what he was trying to tell me about Melvin. What did he really know that he couldn't tell me when I asked and could it be that Jade had a connection to the guys who were following me? What did Ndegwa know about Jade. I couldn't stop asking myself all these questions and the more I did the more I got a throbbing headache. My head was light and my body was in pain. Should have been the fact that the medication administered in my body was done and I needed some more painkillers. I don't know. I got into a cab and instead of going to Betty's, I decided to go to the hospital where Melvin was. I thought that if the guys knew my house, they could easily trace me to the orphanage and they could easily kill even the innocent children. I didn't want anyone's blood on my hands. I checked my phone and I had so many missed calls from Leo then again I had a text from Ndegwa. The text had been sent over an hour ago. Should have been when I was still in the store. Ndegwa said if he didn't make it, I should go to his house and stay there. He told me where to get the keys and I didn't understand why he was doing that but from the talk we had earlier, he just wanted to make sure I was safe. I called Ndegwa again just to confirm that he was still alive but he did not respond. I got to the hospital gate and got off then paid the cab guy and found my way in. I needed to get into that hospital and see my husband. He still was even after Jade said all those things. I didn't care what business they had without me.i just wanted to find out from him what was really going on. It was now past visiting hours and the people who were allowed in were either patient's or the hospital staff. I didn't care because nobody in that hospital knew me except for the doctors who were not even around. I passed by the reception and found the receptionist and before I could tell her who i was, she called me by name and when I looked at the budge on her chest, the name read Lillian. Me: you know me? Lilian: yes, you are the wife to the patient in ward 3B? Me: yes. Lilian: doctor Mila told me to allow you in if you came to check on Melvin. We thought you would come yesterday as Melvin was supposed to get discharged. Me: I know, I have not been around but I'm here to take him home. Can I do that right now? Lilian: the doctor already discharged him and all you need to do is clear the bills. Me: that will not be a problem but can I just see him first? Lilian: yes you can though it's not visiting hours. I had no money on me and I intended to leave with my husband that very night. I had a plan to get him out of that hospital and I didn't care if I had to push him out the window and jump after him. I got to the ward and opened the door but when I walked in, Melvin's bed was empty though the bed was not spread. I looked for him inside the room, in the washrooms but he was not there. I called him but he did not respond. Where the hell was he?.. I went back to the reception and told the receptionist that Melvin was not there and she was surprised. She went with me to check on him but Melvin was really not there. Lilian called the nurse that was in charge of Melvin to come to the ward and Lilian told me that maybe the nurse could know where he was sometimes the patients who have already been discharged go to watch news and socialize in some room inside the hospital and maybe Melvin was there. I waited for a few minutes then the nurse showed up and when the receptionist asked her about Melvin, she had no idea. She said she had left him there over thirty minutes ago when she last attended him. When I heard that, my knees grew weak. What the hell was going on?. I called Melvin's number but it could not be reached. No one had seen Melvin check out and then I realized I was not the only one those guys were after. They were after Melvin too. I couldn't wait for me to be found in that hospital again. If they had captured Melvin then that meant they were still on my trails. I excused myself from the ward and left in a hurry. It was late in the night so I thought of going to ndegwa's home then maybe start my search for Melvin the following day. I got out of the hospital and got a cab again then there was a text from Leo telling me he would be in Nairobi by 5:00am and the first stop would be my home. I didn't answer him and just as I was about to pocket my phone, a call came through and it was Melvin's phone. It had been eventually turned on. Me: Melvin? Voice: it's not Melvin, it's the guys you have been running from all night. Me: what do you want? Voice: we want you. You have one hour to show up to the address I'm sending to your phone. You either show up and keep him alive, or not and we kill him, then we will find you.. After telling me that, the caller hanged up. And now I had to save Melvin or have us both killed......
