I found myself a corner in the cell and sat there. I had no strength to fight, not with my baby outside there with God knows who.
Jade and lorna seemed to be okay and now I was beginning to think that this is something they had planned for sometime. The lies Jade told the police was so convincing that now I doubted if my story even made sense to them. Ndegwa said he would help and I didn't know how he was going to do that.
Elsewhere...
Ndegwa after Benta and the two women got arrested, he went to the hospital where Melvin was to check on him. He didn't know his condition but he sure was the only one that could help the situation.
He got to the hospital reception and asked to see Melvin but he was asked if he was family and since he was not, they could not allow him to see him.
Ndegwa was frustrated. He tried to call Melvin but his phone was not going through. He thought that maybe if Melvin could talk to him, he would convince the doctors to see him but that was not possible.
The reason why the hospital didn't allow just anyone to visit was because they had received cases of patients being illegally taken out of hospitals when others were suffocated to death..
Ndegwa left and went back to the police station. It was late but he thought maybe he could get the police to release Benta because of her son. When the police went inside Benta's house, Ndegwa was left out but he was listening to the conversation and he heard everything that Jade and Lorna had to say. The truth is Ndegwa drove Jade and Melvin to the airport alot of times and so he did know that Melvin had been cheating on Benta but he could not admit that to her. He was trying to be loyal to Melvin but then again he was trying to protect Benta from Jade for he had seen just how broken she was to have learned about them being together the night of the accident. Ndegwa hated Jade. He hated her presence and he hated how ill she spoke of Benta. He got to the station and found one of the officers that had arrested the women and he asked if it was possible to bale Benta out but the police asked him to leave.
Ndegwa: officer please, I know that woman. She is telling the truth.
Officer: are you her husband?
Ndegwa: no.
Officer: then get out of here before you join them in there.
Ndegwa: I carried that woman to the hospital when she was going to deliver that baby boy. She is the mother of the child. Don't separate the child from his mother. He is too young for that.
Officer: do you now want to teach me how to do my job?..
Ndegwa: no officer.
Officer: there is nothing I can do about that right now. You can present yourself at the court as a witness.
By the way the police was talking, he was not ready to listen to anything and Ndegwa had to leave the police station.
Melvin woke up from his sleep and when he was told no one had been there the rest of the day he got so worried that he wanted to leave the hospital immediately but the doctors couldn't discharge him, not just yet.
He got his phone from a drawer of a small cupboard that was just next to his bed. His stuff had been kept there. He called Jade but even though the call was going through, Jade was not responding so he had to call Benta who was not also picking her call.
He tried to get out of bed but he could not as the moment he started throwing tantrums saying he wanter to leave, the doctor asked the nurse to sedate him so that he could rest for In his condition, it was not okay to release him without an assurance of proper care.
Melvin fell asleep once again and his phone dropped on the bed.
Later that evening, just a few minutes after Melvin had fallen asleep. Leo called from the airport in Nigeria but his call was not picked. He wanted to talk to melvin and inform him that things had blown out of proportion and he needed to find a way to fix that mess.
Leo: damn it Melvin!
He said trying Benta's number but nothing. Leo was forced to suspend his trip and go back to Nairobi. He was afraid of what Benta would do especially after the question she asked and he hesitated to answer. Leo loved Benta so much that he couldn't stand the fact that she would not want anything to do with him anymore.
His flight was finally called and he made his way to the boarding area.
Jade: look at you, did you think Melvin was going to love you and forget about all this?
Jade said flaunting her body to me and I sat there quietly watching. My mind was halfway into what she was saying and half way on where my baby was. Ethan didn't cry like alot of kids did. For him, as long as he was full and his diaper was changed, he was good but the officers, were they going to take care of my kid?
What if we were taken to court and Jade won the case with the lies. What was going to become of me and my son? Of cause Jade was going to take Ethan away from me and I would be locked up in prison. I had to do something.
I looked around but in the police cell, there was nothing that could help. I thought of a sharp objects, maybe cut myself and get my way out hoping they would rush me to the hospital.
Lorna: you are stuck on my son like a parasite that you are but believe me it's going to stop. You either leave him or we will make him. You are very shameless. How could you get me arrested?
Who did Lorna think she was, if it were up to me, I would arrest her ass over and over again. Nowonder Melvin's father left her. She ran her mouth and interfered in people's lives way too much.
I got up from the floor where I was seated and walked to the door. I looked around but there was no officer standing
by the door.
Jade: you better get used to this place darling, it's going to be your home for a very long time.
That woman just didn't know how to shut up. Jade was trying my patience and had Ethan not been in my life, I would have strangled her right there because the betrayal from her was so hard to digest. How could she destroy my life like that?.
After Jade got me a job at Melvin's office, I used to bump into him alot, at the photo copy machine, at the water dispenser point, in the lift and most of those times he would say hi then flash this charming smile that somehow caught my attention. I thought Melvin was attractive but I didn't go there to find men attractive. I went there to work and better my life. I wanted a different life from the one I had at the orphanage and just like Jade had taken me out of there, I wanted to work hard and send the girls to boarding schools, I needed to give back to the orphanage what Betty gave to us..
In the process of bumping into each other several more times, Melvin asked me out for a cup of coffee after knowing my name and my department and when I declined the coffee, I would get a rose flower on my desk with a note saying "please have coffee with me". I would smiled and ignore though it felt nice for someone like Melvin to have noticed me among the other beautiful women in his office.
The roses grew from one, to two, four I mean every day that I said no, a rose was added and finally I decided to give in. It was just going to be coffee right?
By the door to the cell there was a rough metal that could cut one so bad, I'm not sure why they never bothered to fix it but I thought that was the only way I was going to get myself out of there.
I held on to my wrist and brushed it against the metal and it cut me so bad, yes that's what I wanted but I was hopeful I could get to the hospital before I could actually die. I stood there for a short while watching the blood ooze out of my wrist then dropped on the floor and I'm not sure what happened after that...
"How is she?"
I heard a voice and when I opened my eyes, I vividly saw someone standing there staring. It was a doctor and Ndegwa was there too.
Me: what happened?
I said in a very low tone trying to get up but the doctor pinned me back to the bed.
Doctor: you fell unconscious after the cut on your wrist.. it's a good thing you got here in time.
I remembered what I had done then checked my wrist and it had been taken care of and the other had been curffed to the bed. These cops really treated me like a criminal.
Doc: get some rest. I will be back to check on your progress.
The doctor left and I was left with Ndegwa. He pulled a chair and leaned in staring at me.
Ndegwa: how are you feeling?
Me: I'm okay... Listen I need you to get me out of here.
Ndegwa: what?
Me: you have your car right?..
Ndegwa: yes, but we can't leave. Not on this curffs and not with a cop standing by your door. You are not well Benta
Me: I need to see Melvin before it's morning.
Ndegwa: how?
Me: lure that cop in here, I will show you..
Ndegwa looked at me as if I was speaking some language he couldn't understand. I was in pain yes, but nothing was going to compare to the pain of loosing my son to a woman who knew nothing about giving birth. She had no idea what I went through in that labour ward and if me being a surrogate for them was their plan all along then they had no idea just what I was capable of doing...
Ndegwa was hesitant but he knew I was serious when I took the drip off my hand.
Me: do it. Get him in here...
I said with a serious look and a commanding tone...
He got up and walked out of the ward. I lay there making my calculations and I don't know what Ndegwa told him but a few seconds they made their way inside.
Officer: what?
Me: where did they take my baby, I want to see him.
Officer: you are are criminal at the moment
and you can't make demands.
Me: I'm not making demands, I'm requesting. The boy needs me. Please, just have him brought here so that I can..
Officer: shut up madam and don't waste my time again.
Ndegwa looked at me then just as the officer started to walk away he hit him from behind and he fell on the bed by my feet then Ndegwa hit him again and pushed him off and got out of the bed with Ndegwa's help.
I was feeling a bit dizzy because of the drip but I had to get out of there and fix the mess Jade and Lorna created. Ndegwa made my work even easier when he hit the cop.
Ndegwa had the police lie on the bed and I quickly fixed the drip on him, we needed to keep him asleep. Ndegwa got the keys from the officer's waist and took the curffs off me then I curffed the officer to the bed and took the keys with me.
Getting out of the hospital was quite a hustle as the nurses were still roaming around and I could easily be spotted.
If we were going to make it out of the hospital we needed to do it fast so that by the time the police were realizing I was gone, maybe I would have seen and talked to Melvin.
Ndegwa was on the lookout as we made our way through the corridors and and when we got to the reception, there was no one and the guard was on a call so we left without being asked anything.
We hurried to ndegwa's car as dizzy as I was and when we got in, he drove off without anyone noticing us...
Ndegwa: I can't believe I just did that.
Me: me too, take me home I need to get my phone before we go to the hospital.
Ndegwa did as I had asked. The truth is, I had no idea why he was being so obedient and why he didn't mind getting in trouble for me. I got to my house after close to 20 minutes drive and Ndegwa said he was going to be on the watch as I went inside to get my phone.
While up there I searched the bedroom, got some money just in case and I also got my phone but just as I was about to get out of the house, I heard two gunshots and I froze. Could it be that the police had traced Ndegwa and I?.
I rushed down stairs and slowly got outside the door and just as I stepped out I saw two gun men looking around and when they saw me they fired a shot at me but it missed and shattered a flower pot that had been by the door so I quickly ran back inside and locked the door. They were coming at me as they had already shot Ndegwa. They looked nothing like the cops and infact, I had never seen any of them before..Who were they and what did they want?...
