Gaia POV
My mother gave me a last hug and took her position in front of me. Leo’s voice poured out of the speakers as he called out the names of the council invited to the function and lastly, my father and mother. There was an echo of chanted praise as my mother stepped out through the doors that led to the garden. All people had their heads bowed as they chanted a prayer:
‘HAIL TO ALPHA DANTE AND LUNA RHEA,
THE GODDESS SENT TO OUR BRETHREN;
BEHOLD THOU ART FAIR;
THOU HAST DELIVERED THY PACK FROM THE HANDS OF ENEMIES
….’
They chanted repeatedly until my mother and father were both seated at the far end of the garden, on their thrones which were sandwiched between thrones of the other pack leaders from all across the world. Once they were settled, the chanting stopped. It was mesmerizing to watch the people giving respect to their alpha like that. The spokesman— Leo began uttering the familiar chant. The whole garden was eerily quiet as Leo continued the enchantment. I was growing antsy from all the noise in my head, created by my wolf-Silvanus. Butterflies flattered my belly causing my palms to sweat. I slowly took deep breathes which always worked like magic and succeeded in calming her down.
All thoughts flew out the window when Leo called me out; I breathed a sigh and whispered:
“It’s time!”
My feet took the very well-manicured and practiced steps as I slowly descended down the pathway that led to the paved cement path in the middle of the garden. My breath hitched as my eyes landed on millions of people who swarmed up for my birthday, but mostly, my coronation. My people were seated in an arch form, leaving most of the front of the garden to the guests. In Jukon, guests were gods. Leaders from the infamous packs, from all corners of the earth, were present, in their glorious plaschi, seated in their ranks of power and wealth. My parents' thrones were the third, which portrayed that they ranked 3rd. As usual, the first throne which belonged to the leader of Kratos Pack was empty. I ignored the pang of disappointment that was gnawing from deep inside me. I snorted when my wolf whimpered and replied:
‘It’s not like he is something eye-catching.’ in response, Silvanus cut off the mind link- dismissing me. b***h.
I continued my polished strides to the head of the garden where Hermes and other council leaders were awaiting me. The whole garden had eyes on me and as much as I was excited, I was really nervous. Today was going to be the turning point of my life. I was going to make nature “play” in front of million eyes so that they knew I was deserving to be the next Alpha of the Jukon Pack. I had no problem summoning, but I haven’t done it in front of the whole world. My strides to the head seemed to be taking forever, but soon, I stepped in front of Hermes whose hand landed on my shoulder, a gesture which commanded me to kneel, and that is what I did. Then it began!
Hermes clapped his hands which resulted in a loud clap of thunder. A gust of wind from nowhere began swirling around us until we were cocooned by what felt like a bubble. My hearing became sharper. My senses were more alert, and my wolf came to the front of my mind, letting me know that she was ready for whatever came next. A murmur from the crowd told me that they all felt the change in the atmosphere. I raised my head to look at Hermes. His hands were clamped at his back as he waited for for the murmuring to quiet down. As soon as the soft hushes turned to an eerie silence, he took a step in front of me.
My head bowed as he began chanting over my head, calling onto the Moon Goddess and all the gods. His voice was growing louder every second, and with every pitch, tremors ran through my body. One of my gifts. As an alpha born of two true alphas, Moon Goddess gifted me and my wolf with special “powers”. My tremors caused earthquakes, my hands summoned nature. Plants, earth, and water. Above all, I talked to light. Hence my name- GAIA- GODDESS OF NATURE.
I was told from a young age that I was no ordinary wolf, that I was a GODDESS. My gifts just happened to be the much-needed proof of that!
The tremors in my body increased, causing the ground I was kneeling on to shake a bit. Hermes’s voice grew louder, the bubble around us began to move, and his chanting pitched higher than I’ve ever heard and the crowd clamped their ears in reaction. All of the sudden, he stopped and dropped his hands from my head. The swirling wind and the bubble stopped as if they were all paused.
Time seemed to have stopped, the crowd was utterly silent. Hermes took a few steps back, leaving room for the priest to finish the work. The priest also called out to the Moon Goddess, but this time the prayer was softer, milder than the previous one shook me to the core. The moment Hermes stopped, my tremors also stopped, and the ground stopped shaking. The priest continued his prayer and howled, as a signal that all was done. That it was time to show who I really was.
Hermes took a step forward and held out his hand. I placed my tiny palm in his large one and stood up from the kneeling position. I turned around to take a good look at the crowd. Millions of eyes looked at me expectantly. And right there and then, I knew I had to do what I had to do. A shuffle of movement behind me caught my attention. Hermes moved beside me and in a loud commanding voice said:
“Behold, the Alpha of all Alphas,
Birthed of two true Alphas,
Blessed by the Moon Goddess;
The child of the heavens;
The giver of life;
And the Goddess of Nature!
Her name is Gaia!”
With that, he walked to the far side of the podium, leaving me all to myself. I took a small breath and looked around. I clapped my hands lightly, and all the plants around the garden began humming; playing. There were “aaahs” and “oooohs” from the crowd. My wolf swelled with pride. I relaxed my hands and control the summon with my mind. The flowers began moving around, rearranging themselves according to how my mind desired. People were wowed by all that. And I thought:
‘Oh, you have seen nothing!’
With a loud growl that had all their attention, I jumped 5 feet high and let Silvanus come to view. By the time I touched the ground, I was no longer standing on two feet, but on 4 paws of dazzling white fur. I slowly surveyed the awestruck crowd. I heard their thoughts, I sensed their emotions. I caught fear, awe, amusement, envy, adoration. But the one that caught my attention came from the middle of the crowd. Satisfaction! Pure and utmost satisfaction! I focused my golden eyes on where the emotion was brewing, but I couldn’t quite make it. As soon as I looked there, the emotion shut off, and I was left with nothing. I refocused my gaze on the crowd. Slowly but surely, people began falling to their knees, bowing their heads in respect and honor. Bowing down to me. Their future rightful Alpha.
When all heads were bowed, including betas and omegas of other packs, I braced my ground and howled. My howling ran deep. Penetrated through the fencing walls of the castle. Tremors caused through Silvanus, causing the ground to shake. I howled and howled. And after a stamping roar, I stopped. I glanced where the leaders were seated; they were all watching me adoringly. Some had fear written all across their faces. But mostly, they admired what they saw. I shifted back to a lady in an emerald green dress.
The crowd began to worship:
Hail to the child of heavens;
Birthed of two true Alphas;
Blessed by the Moon Goddess;
And crowned the God of nature;
Thou hast doves’ eyes;
Thou hast heart of gold;
And Thou shall defeat the enemy with an iron sword;
Long live Alpha Gaia
With a huge smile, I commanded them to rise. And they obeyed. It felt like magic.
It was done.
