The pups adapted remarkably well to their new way of life. It took a lot of talking and a lot of explaining but they eventually got use to the vampires that lived among us. They absolutely loved the dragon shifters. They were always asking to ride them or even just to see them. There were some that were still scared of the dragons, sticking close to their new family or the wolves in general. We tried getting them to mingle among the other races that lived among us but it was futile.
Lyra and Hunter were always together and always making their way around to the many people that lived here. They had no reservations about anything, no bias, nothing. They seemed to love everyone, and everyone loved them. Them being the adopted children of their Alpha's had a little to do with it, but it was their open and caring personalities that won the entire pack over.
Mason has completely turned things around. The new beta's were now competent and confidant in their new positions and could take care of their work without the help of myself, Klaus or Mason. I was impressed with how well he had done with them, and I felt more comfortable now about leaving for Klaus's home now. The pack would be in good hands with the new Betas and Gammas.
"Mom! mom! mom!" Hunter's tiny voice called from behind me. I smiled and turned just in time for him to jump and collide his little body with mine. "Hello to you too." I chuckled. "Mom, Lyra said we are going to see our new grandparents, is that true?" He beamed. "You've already met one of your grandfathers." I reminded him. "I know. But papa Gabriel is always busy." He whined.
I furrowed my brows. "Busy? What do you mean? What's he doing?" I asked. Hunter just shrugged and wiggled around in my arms until I set him down and he took off running back to Lyra. Why is Gabriel busy? He was retired now and should be resting. He should have plenty of time to play with his grandson. "Gabriel, what's going on? Hunter said you were too busy to spend time with him." I linked. I heard his heavy sigh. "There are just some things I need to take care of. I will spend more time with him soon."
He cut our link before I could respond. What was that about? Why was he acting so weird? I shrugged, though not giving it too much thought. He may be having a hard time adjusting to being a retired alpha. I never asked him to merge the packs, I knew he wasn't ready to give up his position and yet he had. I shook my head, I'm sure he will be fine.
"Willow are you ready for tomorrow?" Klaus asked me through our link. I smiled "You know I am. I can't wait to meet the woman who raised such a wonderful man." I could hear him laugh before he responded. "Be sure to tell her that. Oh, and be ready, the entire clan will want us to stay. I know we can't but just be ready for when they ask." My chest tightened at the sudden change in Klaus's tone. He so badly wanted to be home, to stay home. "Don't feel bad my love." He said. "I knew what I was doing when I came back with you. I may not have known all of it, but neither did you. I will be alright."
I didn't answer because I knew he was telling the truth. I could feel his sincerity through our bond, and yet keeping him from what he wants just didn't feel right. He should be able to do whatever he wanted, not be stuck helping me with something he knew nothing about, it just didn't seem right.
I stopped when a young lion shifter approached me. I recently learned how to tell all the feline shifters apart. it was the birds of prey that were almost indistinguishable. "Alpha" the young man said bowing his head. "What can I do for you?" He lifted his head and looked everywhere except in my eye, I sighed softly. "Uh..Um.." The young man stammered. "I'm not going to hurt you child." I sighed "Just calm down and speak clearly."
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Our people have been training very hard, and working round the clock to build homes and stores and anything else the pack needs." I crossed my arms and nodded, urging him to continue. "Well, I was wondering if there was something that could be done to show appreciation for what they've done, everything they have accomplished." I quirked my brow at him. "And what makes you think I don't appreciate them? Does it take some grand gesture in your eyes to show appreciation?" I questioned.
His eyes widened "N...no. Of course not." He quickly back peddled. "Listen close child. Just because I have not shown some grand gesture to show my appreciation for everything this pack has done and still is doing, dose not mean I don't appreciate them. Our numbers, amount of skilled warriors and diversity is what keeps us safe. We are by far the largest pack in the world, with more coming everyday. Do not question my character again. Do I make myself clear?" I demanded. He quickly nodded his head. "Very good. Now go."
He took off running in the direction he came never looking back once, I just shook my head. "Not very good with children I guess." Lyra chuckled from behind me. "Oh, no. I am good with children. I'm just not good with people of any age questioning my character or loyalty. I have given everything I have to this pack. To rebuild it, help it grow, to bring it back to its former glory. And now, it has become so much more than I ever could have imagined.
We have shifters of all kinds, vampires, fae, nymphs, goblins. We even have a few unicorns running around here somewhere. Unicorns who were meant to be extinct has entrusted me, us with their safety. They have come out of hiding to live among our pack, our people. They do not trust easily and are very cautious and shy, but they are here. Always watching us from the shadows of the forest."
When I looked back from the forest to Lyra her eyes were bulged out of her head and her jaw was on the ground. "Lyra dear close your mouth, you might catch a fly," I laughed. She quickly composed herself and looked at me. "Unicorns are real?" She gasped. "Oh yes. As are mermaids. We have a few of them within our pack as well. Some will come onto land from our shores and walk among us for a while before returning to the water." I told her.
"Wait, wait, wait. You mean they are near OUR shores? Like where our boats are kept? Where we fish and swim?" I laughed and nodded. "Then why haven't we seen them? Why have they not come and swam with us?" I shook my head. "Like with unicorns mermaids are not supposed to exist. If people knew, even some supernaturals, they would be hunted and killed without hesitation. So they only show themself to people they completely trust. Try this, go to the shores, make sure you're alone, and talk to them."
"How can I talk to them if they won't show themselves to me?" She asked. "Just go to the water and talk to the water as if you were talking to another person. I promise you, if one is near, they'll hear you." Lyra nodded and took off for the shore. I've never seen her more excited than she was in that moment. I hope at least one of them will reveal themself to her.
