Give it up for her

1786 Words
Nora's POV ''Greetings.'' I greeted him, slightly lowering my head with respect. ''Greetings.'' He responded and stared at me with a questioning gaze, like he was trying to read me. With a nervous gulp, I tucked my hair behind my ears and looked away. “Who is she?” he asked, his gaze still fixed on me. “She is the new library keeper,” Madam Emma responded, and she got a nod from him. “Has Alpha Leo met her yet?” he asked, sending an icy shiver down my spine. “Not yet; Alpha Leo is not in the mansion; he went to the woods,” she said, while I gulped, wishing I could leave immediately before he gets back. ''Alright.'' He said and stole one more glance at me before walking away. “Let's go,” she said, and led me out of the sitting room. “I'll see you tomorrow then.” She said, and I responded with grateful smiles before walking up to the gate. I left the mansion, got into a taxi, and arrived home. When I got home, I met Mom and Vera in the living room. It looked like they were both waiting for me. “What your father said, is it true?” mother was the first to speak. “What's true?” I asked, sitting on the couch. “That you were offered a job at the mansion.” Vera asked, “Yes, is there a problem?” I asked with raised eyebrows. I saw the big frown on Vera's face as she looked at Mother before looking my way. “I believe you were accepted.” She asked and got a nod from me: “With a huge salary.” I responded, “You have to quit that job.” Mom declared firmly, getting me confused. “And why should I do that?” I asked, getting to my feet. I knew Mother was up to something. “It will distract you from your studies; rather, why not let your sister take your place…” Before she could complete her words, I cut in, “How ridiculous of you to say that, Mother!” I yelled angrily, forcing my mother to get up on her feet. “Watch your tongue, young lady!” she warned. “I won't, Mother!” I yelled, not minding the consequences of my actions. “You know how much I need this job, and you know the good reference it will provide for me in the future, and you want me to give it up for my sister, who hates books?” I asked in disbelief. “Vera is studying to be a journalist, but she hates reading books. Why then do you want me to let her take my place?” I asked with pain in my heart. This is typically Mother, always handing whatever is mine to Nora. Since I was a child, she made sure Vera had the nicest of toys, the nicest of clothes, and the nicest of shoes. To her, Vera was her pride, and she would get married to a wealthy man or alpha who would change her life forever. I would have my doubts if I wasn't her child, but I knew I was; there are pictures to confirm that she gave birth to me, but it seems I didn't turn out to be what she wanted. “Listen, Nora,” Vera said as she made her way to me. “You saw how Alpha Leo looked at me a few days ago; it's obvious he likes me, but I don't know if I would have the chance to see him, but with this job, I'll get a good chance and reason to see him every day.” She spoke with a victorious smirk on her face, causing anger to run down my spine. ''Tell them.'' My wolf, Lolita, urged, “Tell them he is ours.” She urged, but I refused—at least not now. “If he likes you as you claim, then it would be very easy for him to find you, but you see this job, I'm not giving it to anyone.” “Not even the moon goddess herself can make me change my mind.” With those words, I walked away and stormed up the stairs with tears in my eyes. It has always been like this. Nothing has changed. I got to my room, locked the door, and lay on the bed on my back. Slowly, I shut my eyes and allowed the tears that clouded my eyes to fall freely. It hurt. It hurt so badly. I cried for hours until I got exhausted and fell asleep. The ringing of my phone woke me up from my sleep. With a grumble, I went for it and saw it was Dora calling. ''What's up?'' I grumbled as I picked up the call. “I've been calling you for almost an hour now,” she grumbled. “Maybe you could have done a mind link.” I gesticulated playfully and heard her sigh over the phone. Dora was a vampire by birth, which means she could eat normal food, walk in the sunlight, and age normally. But she can never mind link to werewolves. “Why are you calling me?" I asked, yawning tiredly. “Did you get the job?” she asked, curious. “Yes, I did,” I responded, and I got a loud shout of joy from her. “That's great news, Lucky you, you have the chance to see the hot and charming alpha Leo.” She gesticulated while I sighed within myself. I haven't told her yet, and I don't think I'll tell her anytime soon. “I went there to work and to get a good review, nothing else.” I lied and heard her scoff over the phone before speaking, “Well, you are lucky. I know so many girls that would kill to be where you are.” She spoke, and I knew she was right. Alpha Leo was the most eligible bachelor in the entire California. “Well, I called you to remind you of the party tonight.” She spoke, causing a heavy sigh to escape my lips. “Can I not come?” I pleaded, but she cut me off, saying, “I won't take no for an answer. Get ready; I'm picking you up by 9pm. With those words, she ended the call on me. With a grumble, I dropped the phone on the bed and stood at my feet. I checked the wall clock and saw it was just 3 pm. With an exhausted sigh, I pulled out a seat and sat behind my worktable. I put on my laptop, logged in to my private file, and continued writing my story, which had yet to be published anywhere. I have the dream of publishing my story someday, but I need a lot of money for that and the confidence to let someone else read it apart from Maxwell. I remember the day I allowed him to read a chapter. He was stunned by it and praised me. He told me I was an excellent writer, but I didn't take his praises to heart because he was my brother and would say anything just to make me happy. With a deep breath, I cleared my mind of all my worries and began typing on the laptop. I wrote for hours until a knock came on the door. “Who's there?” I asked, closing the file of my book. “It's Dad,” Dad responded. ''I'm coming.'' I stood to my feet, went to the door, and unlocked it. I opened the door and let Dad in. “Good evening, Dad,” I said, while he placed a kiss on my forehead. “I just came back from work and heard you were back.” “So, how did it go?” he asked. ''It went well. I was given the job with a salary of $2000 monthly.'' I spoke with a weak smile and sat on the bed, while Dad stood before me with a questioning gaze. “It's good news; why are you not excited about it?” he asked, worried. With a deep breath, I went into deep thought, wondering if I should tell Dad what was going on, but I didn't want the matter to get out of hand. Dad might decide to take the matter to the council of Wolfly, and I didn't want to be rejected openly by Alpha Leo. My wolf won't be able to handle it. “You still haven't told me why you came home crying that day?” he questioned. “I'm fine, Dad; it's just a normal bad day for me; you should already be used to it.” I murmured and heard a heavy sigh from him. He remained silent for a moment before sitting beside me on the bed. “My Nora,” he called, causing a weak smile to appear on my face. Remember, I'm your father, and I love you so much. Hide nothing from me," he pleaded, and got a nod from me. “I'm not ignorant of how you are being treated by your mother and sister, and I'm so sorry that I can't do anything about it, but I make a promise to you today that I will protect you and make sure to give you the love of both a mother and a father.” He assured me, and out of impulse, I fell into his arms and gave him a tight hug while hot tears streamed down my cheek. “Thanks, Dad,” I said with a grateful smile, and he responded with a kiss on my forehead. ''I'll leave you now, make sure you come down for dinner,” he said, getting a nod from me. I watched him leave my room while I went back to my laptop. I continued writing until it was time to make dinner. With a sigh, I stood to my feet and left my room. I took the stairs, and just as I was about to get to the sitting room, I heard voices. Two voices were those of Mother and Vera, but then I noticed a familiar manly voice, which made me curious. Curiously, I hastened my footsteps and got to the sitting room, only to see Beta Jayson seated on the couch, with Vera beside him, smiling happily. ''Alpha Leo really wants me to come see him in the mansion?” Vera asked, with so much excitement in her voice that my body turned numb.
