Chapter 17 

I decided after going home to shower and change that I would take Addie out for the day. We went out for breakfast then decided to hit the mall. Addie was excitedly checking out every store picking out new outfits and shoes. It was a perfect day with my girl. I haven’t told Addie about mine and Alex’s conversation this morning. I don’t want her to know that we are getting together right now. I don’t want to rush it incase things don’t work out. She has suffered enough without having to suffer through a break-up. I did tell her that we talked about them spending time together and him coming to school things and ballet recitals and this seemed to make her very happy. We had just sat down in the food court for lunch, so I decided it was a good time to ask her about her grandfather.  

“Addie, how do you feel about getting to know your grandfather Greg as well?” I asked  

After giving it a little thought, she says “I would like to get to know him maybe he can come to ballet recitals and school stuff too.” She says with a smile on her face. 

“I'm sure he would love too, I let your father know.” We finish up our lunch just talking about school and new friends. Wanting to give her a break from all the serious talk. After we finished lunch, I told her we could hit two more stores then had to head home so I could get ready for work. As we are walking out of the mall towards the car my phone buzzes letting me know I have a text. 

Alex: Hey I was thinking we could hang out, like a date just you a me. 

Me: I have to work tonight. 

Alex: Well I can meet you after work. 

Me: Ok, I'll text you when I'm home you can come over if that works for you  

Alex: That’s perfect   

My night at work seems to drag on. The E.R is extremely busy but all I can think about is my date with Alex. Life seems blissfully perfect right at this moment, Alex and I together with our daughter. I’m excited to get to know him again and start over as a family, Me Alex Addie and Liam. My heart swells with pride thinking about raising our family together. I’m brought out of my daydream by my pager. Unclipping it from my pocket (CODE RED ROOM 12). I take off running down the hall, the nurses are running in with the crash cart. The patient is a 12 year old girl who was hit by a truck 2 days ago. She has been going into cardiac arrest a few times a day since the accident. The nurses and I manage to get her stable again. I let out a sigh of relief. “Good job everyone. I'll go update her parent.” I say as I leave the room. Her parents are waiting just outside her door, tears in their eyes. 

“Mr. And Mrs. Hannity Jenna is stable again” I say with a smile on their faces. 

“Thank you Doctor, thank you so much” Mr. Hannity says hugging me. 

“Your very welcome Sir, but I Jenna needs a more extensive cardiac work-up. I am going to have one of the nurses put in a page to the head of our cardio department. The sooner we can figure out what is causing her to continue going into cardiac arrest the better.” 

“Of course Doctor whatever you need to do to make her better” 

“I’ll have one of the nurses bring you the necessary paperwork to sign.”  

I checked on Jenna before getting ready to end my shift. She hasn’t woken up since the accident but she is stable for now and I hope she stays that way. As rewarding as this job can be it is extremely exhausting and stressful. I head to my locker to grab my things and change my clothes. When I pull out my phone I see I have a new text from Alex. 

Alex: Hey Babe I cant wait to see you tonight. I’m forever grateful for you bringing Addie into my life and giving me a chance to be there for both her and you. 

Ready his message brings a smile to my face and butterflies to my stomach. I have waited for this for what feels like forever.  

Me: I can’t wait to see you be the amazing father I know you can be. I’m grateful that you have been so accepting of Addie and have welcomed her into your life. She is so happy to finally have her Daddy in her life. I am out of work now I’m exhausted but I want to see you. Meet me at my house in 20? 

Alex: I’ll see you there Babe 

I hope into my car and head for home.
