Matthew’s POV-
When I saw the name of Eilith Clarke on the list of applicants for the Executive’s Personal Assistant, I almost screamed. Due to the position being an Executive’s Personal Assistant, I had ultimately the final say on the matter. This is because this position would be in many meetings with not only all the executives but me as well, and we will be discussing many business statics, strategies, products, policies, and even things said about us in the news. So, these interviews are extremely tough. They ask a lot of personal questions, so I can get a measure of the individual who I am going to be allowing into such important and highly confidential meetings. I was going to be watching these interviews from my office, as always. I suspect that me being in the interviews, would throw most if not all interviewees. That is why a webcam is set up, so I can watch without them knowing I am watching. I selected five of the best on the applicants' list, including Eilith’s name. Eilith was by far the most superior in academics, even in work experience. She would be far better suited for an Executive position, but I understand she is likely trying to keep things as low-key as possible to hide from my nephew, given the fact that he has been released on bail, and my friend’s superiors are putting pressure on him to close the case. So, this is going to be a hard one to fight. I will be speaking with him again about the case tonight.
Today is the day of Eilith’s interview. I was eager to watch this, to see if it was obvious that she was hurt. But something tells me that she will be putting on the toughest face that you have ever seen. I was surprised to see her name on the applicants list, so she was properly preparing to leave him and move on with her life. It shows me she has a strength in her, especially considering I know what my cousin is like. I was in my office with Cameron Jones, my best friend and personal assistant. He has been working here with me since I began building the company. He even gets paid more than my executives, something they are not aware of. He deserves it though, he works hard, never questions me, and always offers me his help and ears when I need someone to talk to.
Cameron chuckled at me, shaking his head, “Aren’t you a little too antsy for these interviews? Who is on that list of interviewees that you are eager to see?”
“Eilith Clarke,” I replied.
“Why? Do you know her,” he inquired?
“She was my nephew’s girlfriend, until a week ago, which is when he attacked her and put her in hospital. She lived with my nephew, in another city. She has just moved here, and applied to work here,” I told him.
“The nephew, who keeps committing crimes and getting away with a great deal of them, because your half-brother, and his father, have been covering them up,” he said.
I nodded, “Yes, that one. I always thought she was too good for my nephew.”
“You like her, don’t you,” he stared at me.
“Honestly, I do not even know. I am not sure whether I am doing this because I like her, or because I need her help to make sure my half-brother and nephew both get punished. I only met her a few times, and when I did, I thought she was the perfect woman for me. She was beautiful, graceful, well-mannered, intelligent, and funny,” I told him.
“Well, are you considering hiring her? I looked over the applicants who had interviews earlier, and she has by far the best academic standing and work experience. She is certainly overqualified for this position, but I am guessing she is choosing this position to hide from your nephew,” he said.
“I am considering it. But I wish to ask if you would keep an eye on her, once I give her the job. Make sure she settles in well, and does not get bullied, or pestered by others. I do not know how well she has healed from her injuries, so she may not be able to do any heavy lifting, make sure things are put in place, so she does not need to lift anything heavy,” I asked him.
“What were her injuries,” he inquired.
“She had a bruise on her face, a concussion, cuts on her back from a whip, and a few cracked ribs,” I responded.
“Your nephew did that to her,” he said, his mouth hanging agape.
I nodded.
“Damn, I can see why you are so against him, and want to try to keep her close,” his eyes widened in shock, as he spoke.
“Even so, the other interviewees have not been amazing so far. They have been good, some with a lot more experience with receptionist work, but they haven’t wowed any of the executives. There hasn’t been any impressed look or even shocked looks from any of them,” I said.
“Is that her,” he said, pointing at Eilith on the screen, as she took a seat in front of the executives for her interview.
I nodded. He chuckled, “I can see why you like her; she is very beautiful. As you said graceful, she is doing well at concealing the wounds that she sustained.”
“I agree. Now, let’s be quiet and listen,” I said.
We sat in my office, listening to her being interviewed by my executives. They were asking her some personal questions mixed with professional ones. Honestly, the professional ones were extremely tough, compared to what was given to the other interviewees, but she answered them as if they were nothing. I had honestly never seen professional questions and ones about our company being answered so perfectly. I could see the surprise in Cameron’s eyes. Not even he could answer them that perfectly. I could see the reactions of my executives, including the one who she would be working with. Unfortunately, I did not like one of his reactions. He licked his lips while staring at her. Even Cameron noticed that reaction. But all the other executives were a mix of impressed and stunned. The interview ended on a high note.
Cameron said, “She was impressive, compared with others. Did you catch the way the executive, who needed a personal assistant, looked at her?”
I nodded, “I think she will be a definite hire. Among others, her knowledge and even the way she holds herself is better than any other interviewee. I did. Keep an eye on Mr Hicks. He had already received a verbal warning for his actions towards his last assistant, when it all came out.”
“I will speak with security. I can have the CCTV cameras from his offices routed to a second location, so they are not only on the main servers but a laptop as well, so that you can keep an eye on them while you are working if you like,” he suggested.
“Do that! If he puts one toe out of line, then we should give him a written warning. He already knows that,” I said.
Cameron nodded, and I turned to look at him, and asked, “Do you know how to clone someone’s phone, or infect it with a virus to track and record everything?”
“Thinking of doing that to your brother’s phone,” he responded.
I nodded, “No idea how to do it though.”
“Give me his details, and I will see what I can do,” he said.
One thing not many people know about Cameron, is he loves to hack and write code. He is known throughout my company for being incredible with computers, but he is only incredible because he spent his teenage years hacking and writing codes. So, if anyone can do it, it is him.
“I am already receiving emails from the executives, and they all say that Eilith is the best candidate, so I will say yes to them, and have HR sort out the necessary documents and inform her first thing tomorrow morning,” I declared, before writing down my half-brother’s information.
I gave it to Cameron, and he got to work on it. I replied to the emails I had received, and then drafted an email with her documents and application that she had sent to us, to my Human Resources Department. I told them to offer her the job, with the hours and pay, and give her a start date for one week's time. I figured the extra rest would help her heal a little better before she starts working her, as I suspect she might panic a little when she sees that I am the CEO. I kept my image hidden from the world as much as I could, mostly because I did not want to have overwhelming ties with my family. Once I had done that, Cameron came back in with some good news. From his personal laptop and his own wireless internet hub. He was able to put a virus inside an email which he sent to my brother, and he stupidly opened it. The virus had given us access to his entire phone and laptop, every call, every text, every email. Cameron explained that the virus will track everything and record everything from now on, including passwords, and phone calls he makes. This is going to be intense. I decided to text my friend and wait for him to call me. I will have to ask him if he thinks it is time to send the report about corruption to the newspapers, distract his superiors for longer, so he can keep investigating without hindrance from them.
