Chapter 5: Coincidence (2)

Jennifer was reorganizing his desk as he noticed a figure passing by her. “Sir… you’re in the office so early?” He asked as she raised her head and glanced at the man.
“It’s surprising, isn’t it?” Pesco smiled somewhat mischievously as he replied, he seemed to be in a particularly good mood that day. Something that was by no means common for him and his personal assistant knew that better than anyone.
“Mostly because you don’t usually come up until around noon…” Jennifer said while withholding his obvious surprise at seeing her boss there so early.
“It’s a special day today, there are going to be a few interviews right?” Pesco said while tilting his head to the side and smiling brightly. If he was any happier one might think he’d taken some sort of substance.
“Yes… but you usually never come to those.” Jennifer replied with some amount of bewilderment. He couldn’t even put his own thoughts in order to speak on them.
“Well there’s a particular person I want to see.” Pesco admitted readily as he checked his near empty schedule for the day.
“I understand, should I organize a special meeting room for them?” Jennifer asked as he glanced at his employer who was in an unusually chipper mood. ‘I wonder what kind of person he’s waiting for… they must be an exceptional talent if the CEO himself is going out of his way to meet them…’ He thought to himself.
“No, the interview process will be the same as the rest of them. There’s no need for special treatment.” Pesco said with a smile that reflected the kind of excitement you’d see in a young child. And yet there was something more to it, it didn’t seem as pure as one might assume it should be, almost as if he had ulterior motives for the man.
“Understood.” Jennifer nodded his head in agreement as he continued rearranging his desk. ‘He says that but he’s acting all giddy and excited, I don’t think I’ve seen him ever act like that before.’ His thoughts trailed off quickly but were interrupted even more abruptly.
“Tell me, do you think my suit looks good? Should I change the tie?” Pesco who wasn’t as frivolous or as caring to his appearance, who didn’t pay that much attention to detail was suddenly asking for an opinion.
“Huh?” Jennifer looked stunned for a moment, so much so he couldn’t utter a word.
“I think a gray tie would look much better than this dark blue one…” Pesco thought out loud as he looked at his options he had quite a collection of them, each one more expensive and well made than the last one. You could tell at a glance it was one of the few things he seemed to care to collect.
“Umh… I think the same, sir… I was just surprised you asked, you usually don’t care about such things…” Jennifer once more couldn’t help but remark out loud as he found it incredibly odd. He felt as if any moment now an entire filming crew would pop out of somewhere hidden and admit to all of it being a joke of sorts or anything similar.
“It’s a special day.” Once more Pesco said as he settled on the darker blue tie after all and tied it confidently while the other stared at his back.
“Right…” Jennifer took a breath then focused on his own work once more. ‘He’s always been eccentric even on the best of days… but this is a bit much even for him… oh… maybe it’s a woman he’s trying to impress? Offering her a job isn’t really a flirting tactic though is it?’ He thought about it for a bit.
“Tell me when the interviews start.” Pesco asked as he leaned over the other’s shoulder and spoke in a low voice that slightly startled the other.
“It’s going to be another thirty minutes until the first arrival… but there are quite a few people already here waiting.” Jennifer said as he looked through the small window where the lower floors could be seem pretty clearly.
“Alright, let’s prepare then.” Pesco said as he adjusted his tie on a bit tighter and headed out the door, the other obediently following after him.
“Yes.” Jennifer agreed easily. ‘Well if it makes him do his job better, who am I to judge who he’s here to see. I think it’s a good thing either way.’ He thought about things from the positive side of things.
‘I wonder if I really should give this back to him…’ Pesco thought to himself as he looked down at the necklace he wore around his neck. He kept it hidden beneath his suit but the gemstone he could feel even through the fabric of his expensive white button down. ‘Gregory, let me be the judge of whether your son deserves this or not…’ His thoughts trailed off as the first person to be interviewed entered the room.
‘So unentertaining…’ Instantly Pesco lost interest after seeing the first person. He listened in on the interview process but didn’t interfere. Then it was the second person, and the third… he remained as still as ever only glancing at each candidate once before looking blankly somewhere else.
‘He seemed so interested just moments ago and now he’s acting as if this is a bother…’ His secretary couldn’t believe what kind of person they worked for. ‘Does that mean that the woman he’s waiting for isn’t here yet?’ He wondered to himself while waiting and carefully observing each person that entered as if he too had made this into a game of trying to figure out who his employer was so eagerly looking forward to meeting that day.
Yet no one of interest seemed to come and the interview process was more or less over as the other candidates had each taken their turn…
