Chapter 6: Interview (1)
***
‘He didn’t move a muscle for a single candidate…’ Jennifer thought to himself as he stood there watching from the side. He felt somewhat conflicted but knew he didn’t have the right to say anything to his employer.
“I guess he decided not to come…” Pesco mumbled under his breath so quietly nobody was able to hear them. It was a few moments as the rest of the high ranking employees and HR’s representative that decided to stand up preparing to leave, and then.
“I’m sorry I’m late for the interview… work got me caught up…” Then entered Gregory, as sweaty and tired from running as the first time he met him. Almost in a comedic late fashion as well.
“I’m very sorry but the interview process had ended just now so we can’t-” Before one of the HR team could even finish their sentence the CEO interrupted them with a smile.
“No, we can take him. We’re all still here, yes?” Pesco glanced back at the rest of his staff who sat back down each in their own chair after hearing their orders.
‘What about no special treatment bullshit you said before?!’ Jenifer stared wide eyed at his employer then changed his expression to a more calm and collected one. ‘So this is the person? I thought it would be a sexy woman, not this plain looking sweaty dude, he didn’t even bother to dress nicely for this.’ He thought to himself somewhat disappointed by the person he saw.
“I heard you came here straight from your current workplace?” Pesco asked as he crossed his arms and looked at the man with a pair of discerning eyes as if he was carefully observing and analyzing his every moment.
“Yes.” George replied, his chest still heaving from running there, he smelled of sweat but he wasn’t too concerned about it as if he couldn’t care less. Even with a single look into his eyes you could tell he wasn’t even remotely interested in this position.
“What brilliant work ethic, it shows how diligent you are.” Pesco suddenly remarked with incredible enthusiasm he hadn’t showed before towards any of the other interviewees.
‘Diligent? It shows that he has horrible time management skills and he can’t even be bothered to put on deodorant before entering a room filled with people!’ Jennifer thought to himself he couldn’t believe his ears, listening to his employer give such high praise to a man that couldn’t even be bothered to shower or dress the part was ridiculous.
“You work at a construction… that must mean you have good leadership abilities as you have to manage a team and work together with others.” Pesco continued, as if he was making up positive attributes he desperately wanted to assign to the man in front of him. He spoke with such confidence that if the rest of the HR team didn’t have eyes to see what was actually in front of them, they might have actually believed each word said.
“Uh… yes?” George was somewhat conflicted but agreed none the less as if out of sheer confusion.
‘What kind of bullshit is the boss saying? That’s insane… and that other guy isn’t even sure?!’ Jennifer was seething, had he been any angrier his eyes might have popped out of his skull and bounced off the ground in an ugly manner.
“How interesting, you’ve been working ever since you turned 18, that must mean you have quite some experience. You’ve also never been late to work which is really reassuring…” Pesco continued as he looked down at the barely filled out resume that the man had send them earlier that day.
‘Boss has really lost it, you can’t tell me he’s trying to spin all this guy’s faults to a positive? There’s no way… is the boss stupid? Did someone pay him to do this? Or maybe he’s hypnotized? Yes, I’m more inclined to believe this shady looking, messy haired, stinky guy is some world class hypnosis expert much more so than a competent regular employee.’ Jennifer was no more than angry he was baffled, he was amazed it was even possible for a single man to come up with that much bullshit and speak it with a straight face none the less.
“I’m very interested in your resume.” This time it was solely Pesco that spoke, the rest of the interviewing staff didn’t dare utter a word as they too stood there in disbelief as they listened to their employer spout such nonsensical blabber.
None of them could interrupt him however, it wasn’t their place and none would enjoy risking their job either over something like this.
“Listen the truth is I don’t even want this job, I came here because I had to. Now if I can have back what’s mine I will leave.” George said as he sighed heavily and stood up from his seat and walked straight to the CEO without hesitation.
“You’re also very honest and you speak without fear. Those are some brilliant qualities.” Pesco continued, completely ignoring the man’s previous statement.
‘HUH?! HE JUST OUTRIGHT SAID HE DIDN’T WANT THIS JOB, WHY ARE YOU STILL TRYING TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE HE’S A PERFECT FIT?!’ Jennifer was now more or less left feeling as if he’s in a horrid nightmare that felt far too real.
“No, none of that, I just don’t like your company and I won’t be lured in by money. It isn’t who I am. I may be struggling, and I may be dirty and sweaty… but I’m happy the way things are and I won’t run to you for a corporate job that I don’t truly deserve.” George continued while looking directly into the other’s eyes. It was something even Jennifer couldn’t allow himself to do, and most other people were too afraid of speaking to the CEO directly as well. It was only George that seemed to hold no fear of anything.
“…….” Pesco was quiet for a bit as he looked up at the man.
‘There’s no way he can ignore that, right? Such blatant disrespect even though he’s offered such an opportunity… come on boss tell me to kick him out of here!’ Jennifer was already folding up his sleeves ready to drop his notebook he held onto and rush the disrespectful man outside the office.
Then before anyone could move Pesco spoke up again. “I see… I will be happy to welcome you on our team starting Monday. Please make sure to quit your previous position until then. I will be glad to pay the fees of you quitting for you.” He spoke in a mellow and sweet sounding voice which as well wasn’t typical of him at all.
“S-sir… did you listen to a single word he said to you this entire interview?” Jennifer couldn’t take it anymore and whispered into his employer’s ear his question in a panicked and flustered manner.
“Yes, and I gathered he was the one we’re looking for. Although I do understand him not wanting to be given such a high position outright. So let’s start him as an entry level employee under my direct supervision.” Pesco said as he corrected the documentation in front of him and handed it to his assistant to re-print.
“But, sir will you have the time to supervise him?” Jennifer stumbled over his words as he caught the sheet of paper in his arms and looked it over. He questioned the man’s judgment.
“Of course, it’s my job after all…” Pesco said with certainty as he turned to the man one more time and extended his arm for a handshake.
‘Technically it’s not your job at all… this is so tragic I don’t even know what to do anymore…’ Jennifer sighed heavily as he felt like there was no trying to reason with a man unwilling to listen to anyone’s advice.
“Prepare his documents, and see you soon.” Pesco retracted his hand as he noticed the other wasn’t willing to shake his. He simply smiled and bid the man farewell. With him outside followed all the rest of the staff that sat there and watched it all happen silently.
“Huh…?” Only George was left there even more surprised than before as he looked around and felt somewhat scammed…
