Chapter 4: Coincidence (1)
***
As George entered his apartment and slammed the door behind him, he felt a sense of confusion he hadn’t experienced before. He was felt baffled by the man he met that day and even more than that he felt like he’d seen him before but that he just couldn’t remember when that was…
“Yo, what’s that?” His roommate, Steve asked as he moved across the room and glanced down at the coffee table where George had left all his things.
“It’s a business card.” George remarked as he laid down onto the sofa and just face planted his head into the pillow. He didn’t feel right at the time.
“For TM company? Where did you steal it from? Or did you find it on the ground?” Steve asked with quite the surprised sounding voice as he carefully observed the card as if to figure out if it was real or not.
“As if… It was given to me, I was offered an interview.” George finally admitted although he was somewhat reluctant to do so in the beginning.
“WHAT?! WHAT KIND OF CHRISTMAS MIRACLE IS THAT?!” Steve basically yelled out, dropping the card to the ground as he asked. He stared wide eyed at his friend as if he couldn’t believe his ears.
“It’s October…” George replied with a less than impressed sounding voice.
“Still… are you going to go? No, where did they even meet you? Was it a gorgeous lady? I heard their employees are as beautiful as supermodels, and celebrities!” Steve asked a series of random questions as he moved back and forth into the chair with such speed you’d think he’d either fall off it or it would break beneath him. He couldn’t contain his excitement.
“As beautiful…” George thought back to the man he met that day, the image of Pesco became somewhat engraved in his memory. “Yes… that much is true, their employees are really beautiful.” He admitted, although he didn’t particularly want to. He hadn’t been left with the best first impression of the man he met.
“Wow, that’s amazing! To think you’d have the opportunity to work at a place like that! What a lucky dog you are!” Steve remarked as he finally stopped shaking his chair violently back and forward.
“I still haven’t decided if I want to do it or not.” George said as he moved aside and grabbed the business card off the man’s hand. He stared at it for a while as if contemplating.
“What? Are you stupid or something? Of course you’re doing it, do you have any idea how much they get paid, it’s insane to refuse!” Steve spoke with a much more forceful voice than ever before as he crossed his arms, he glared at his roommate as if the man had said the most stupid thing in the world.
“I don’t like being forced into these things. I want to make the decision for myself-” George was cut off mid sentence by his less than pleased friend.
“Stop with that bullshit, you’re sounding like one of those hippies… You’ve been struggling with money for years now. You owe me over a thousand bucks, remember?” Steve said while planting his ass near the sofa as if he was going to jump at the man were he to say another stupid thing.
“I will pay you back-” George was interrupted once more.
“I know you will and that’s not the point. You’ve been taking money from so many people and have been barely making ends meet. I’m the only one that doesn’t care if you give them back or not. But the others?” Steve was a no nonsense kind of man, he had a more serious outlook on the world as well, unlike the more careless go with the flow attitude that George showed every time.
“…ugh… way to remind me…” George looked unhappy but better than anyone he knew that his friend was only saying it because he needed to hear it.
“I don’t know what interaction you had with the girl from that company but be kind and go to the interview, give it your all and pray to the Heavens you’re going to get an offer.” Steve said as he shrugged his shoulders and took the business card off of his roommate’s hands again and headed to the kitchen. “I’m going to frame this, it’s the closest I’m getting to touching anything from TM…” He said in a half joking and half serious manner.
“……..but it’s…” George still wanted to deny the offer.
“Stop being such an ass will you? This kind of opportunity is once in a lifetime. Imagine you refuse it now and end up struggling the rest of your life!” Steve repeated from the kitchen with a loud voice making sure the other heard him well.
“You’re always so blunt…” George sighed as he turned to his side and closed his eyes.
“I need to be since you’re the way you are…” Steve remarked. He didn’t hate the general carelessness of his friend but he could never understand it either.
“Fine, I’ll go to the stupid interview… besides the interviewer has something of mine.” George finally made his decision.
“What does she have?” Steve asked as he tilted his head to the side, he came back to the livin groom of their two bedroom apartment.
“The necklace my father used to wear…” George said as he slowly sat up straight.
“What? Why is it in her hands? Isn’t that stealing? Or… wait so she took it so that you’d show up?” Steve asked, his emotions changing from panicked to interested quickly.
“Yeah, I guess so. They said they’d give it back after I get interviewed.” George tapped his fingers on top of the coffee table he was still unsettled by the thought of the man he met being familiar. Although no matter how much he searched his memory he couldn’t find out from where he knew him if he did.
“Isn’t that kind of romantic? It feels like she was flirting with you.” Steve assumed by what he’d heard.
‘Right, I never corrected him that Pesco isn’t a woman… well whatever…’ George thought to himself, he couldn’t be bothered to fix his mistake now. “I don’t think it was flirting.” He said with a straightforward face.
“It totally was, man! Like maybe even the job offer was a way of getting your attention. I’m sure she’s very interested in you if she’d go this far just to get your favor!” Steve remarked with certainty and even more excitement as if he’d heard fresh gossip just now.
“Maybe…” George didn’t really want to agree with his friend but he wasn’t in the mood to argue either. He just sat there staring blankly into space with thoughts still racing through his mind. ‘There was something about that person… I can’t really understand it… but he stared at me so longingly… it was strange…’ He thought to himself before his friend snapped him out of his daze.
“Come on, what are you waiting for? Get dressed and let’s get to work!” Steve said as he urged the other to get up. He was already in his uniform.
“f**k…” George didn’t feel like going to work that day again but he stood up none the less.
“No complaining, take it as motivation to succeed in the interview.” Steve said as he pushed his roommate off the sofa and threw him his work clothes when left the room…
