Chapter 5

1712 Words
We make it to our meeting spot before the Silver Lake wolves. I shift back, not caring about my own nudity. I’m among our warriors, they are used to this. We don’t always have a change of clothes close by. I will need to be in human form to talk with the Silver Lake wolves. I can’t mindlink them as they are not part of our pack. My own wolf, Blaze, was feeling anxious, pacing in my mind while waiting for me to give him control again. He’s never been like this before. Maybe he's worried for his Alpha? Blaze, can you reach Chase and Thunder now that we are close by? No, I can’t. It’s like they are sleeping? He says, unsure of himself. My wolf is a lot of things, but insecure isn't one of them. His behavior is really weird right now. I don’t have time to dwell on it as I see the Silver Lake pack wolves approaching in the distance. “I would like to get everyone’s attention.” I waited a minute before continuing. “First, I would like to thank Silver Lake for lending a helping hand with our mission today. We have strength in numbers. Four of our men are being held in an underground hunter's lab. Our men have been keeping an eye on the place. The entrance looks like a shed in the middle of nowhere, guarded by 50 or so hunters. They are equipped with Tranquilizer guns. I am unaware at the moment if they have regular guns. Be careful. I wouldn’t put it past them to have silver bullets. Watch your back, and your team’s back. I will split you up in five teams. Silver Lake, I want you to approach from the south and the east. Golden moon will be taking the north and the west. I also want a team guarding the road. If our men are not in any shape to move on their own, wait before transporting them outside. I have a nurse ready to check up on them and make sure they are ready for transport. Your main task is to secure the area. I will give you a few minutes to get in place. At my signal, you may make yourselves known to the hunters and neutralize the threat.” I shift back into my wolf and let Blaze lead our team to the western side, the furthest from our meet up location. Once spread out and ready to attack, Blaze howls to the sky. It’s go time! Blaze is focused, honing in on his prey. As we approach the first hunter on our path, Blaze sneaks up behind him, crouching low before pouncing into the air, latching onto his throat. The man didn’t even have time to s¢ream before he was dead at our feet. With the element of surprise going against them this time, the hunters didn’t stand a chance. They held up for a little bit, shooting at us from afar once they spotted us. It made us retreat temporarily but then we came back with a vengeance. It took us just around an hour to make it to the shed and secure it. I was busy rounding up all of our men, making sure we had no casualties. Luckly, no one from either Golden Moon or Silver Lake got severely injured. We have a few who got hit by darts and would have to sleep of the tranquilizers, but otherwise we made it out scotch free. Beta, Alpha Jackson, Alex, Fred and Julien are here in the cells. There's also one more prisoner. What would you like us to do? Make sure the doors are all unlocked and stand guard; nurse Kenzi is on her way to check on them. Uhm...are you sure Beta? Isn't she mated to Alex? He’s in really bad shape. Alpha Jackson and Alex seem to have taken the brunt of the torture. It’s not pretty. She can handle it. Let her through when she arrives. Luna Marie is with her. I doubt we'll be able to keep her from Alpha Jackson. Just let both of them through but stay close to them and do what they ask of you. Ok, what about the other prisoner? We can bring them with us for treatment until we know more about them. Is he a wolf? I don’t know what she is. It smells pretty bad down here and the girl’s unconscious. Alright. Once Kenzi has checked her over, bring her to the truck. After my conversation with the warrior, Blaze started to pace around the shed. What’s going on Blaze? I don’t know yet...I just feel like something's going to happen. We killed all of the hunters. There are no more threats for miles. Blaze shuts me out and continues his pacing. That’s enough Blaze! Shift back! We need to search the tents nearby and see if there are any clues. We need to know how they found out about the Alpha’s trip and why they would take him. Blaze didn’t say anything but did let me take control again. The tents the hunters were using were set up in a clearing not too far from the shed. I grab a few warriors with me and we start sifting though the tents, trying to find anything that could give us a clue on how this happened and why. Suddenly, Blaze starts howling in my head. Mate! Mate! Mate! I take a second to smell the air around me, and sure enough, a light smell of citrus hits me. I run off, following the direction the scent is coming from. I’m approaching the shed when I notice one of our warriors exiting, carrying an unconscious woman in his arms. Mate! Mate! Mate! Blaze screams in my head. I take the last few steps towards the warrior and gently grab her out of his arms, cradling her against my chest, carrying her bridal style. “Mine!” I can’t help but say out loud so everyone would know who she was to me. No one would take her away from us now. I make my way to the pickup truck. The truck's full but there's some space left in the box along with Fred and Julien. I gently lay her down before hopping up. I sit with my back against the tailgate before bringing her gently onto my lap, her head resting against my chest, my arms wrapped securely around her. I only just now notice how skinny and pale she is, with multiple scars all over her frail body. I close my eyes for a second, trying to reign in the anger I feel seeing my mate like this. How could anyone do that to MY mate? “What are you waiting for? Let’s go home!” I shout to the driver, not quite in control of my anger yet. The ride was long and bumpy, the bed of the truck not the comfiest place ever. I should’ve had more than one truck come along. My mate shouldn’t have to ride in the back of a truck. She should be comfortably settled on a plush seat. I close my eyes and focus on her heartbeat. I could feel some very light sparks against my skin where we were touching. Feeling her against me and listening to her light breathing and consistent heartbeat helped me relax somewhat. We are stopping so Kenzi can check up on everyone and make sure they are all okay. Part of me wanted to get up and move around a little as my legs have gone numb, but I don’t want to move my precious little mate from my lap. “Kyle, I need to check up on her. Could you come lie her down on the grass over here please?” Kenzi says in a soft voice. I do as she says, wanting the best for my mate. Once I settle her in the grass, I take a seat beside her and look up at Kenzi. “Is she going to be okay?” “I don’t know. She seems extremely dehydrated and severely malnourished, without counting all the scars on her. I don’t even want to imagine how long she has been there for. Is she a wolf too? You guys heal faster so maybe she has a shot. ” It got me thinking. Is she a wolf? I can’t sense her wolf, but then again, she’s unconscious so maybe if she is a wolf her wolf might also be unconscious? Blaze, can you sense if our mate is a wolf? I... I’m not sure? Maybe? I can’t seem to reach her at all. It’s like a wall is stopping me from reaching her. Fred must’ve heard our conversation as he turns towards us “She’s a wolf. She told me her pack never found her.” “Then I guess she has a fighting chance” Kenzi adds as I turn my attention back to her. So, my mate's a wolf. I wonder what pack she’s from? I notice Kenzi connecting a pouch of liquid to a small tube poking out of her arm. “What’s that?” I ask “It’s just Saline with Dextrose. It’ll help rehydrate her and give her body a little boost of energy to start the healing process. It’s all I can really do remotely like this. She will need more intensive medical care when we get to the clinic. Now stand up and hold this, I need to check up on Fred and Julien.” She says, handing me the bag of Saline before heading towards Fred. After about thirty minutes, she disconnects the bag, leaving the tube in her arm in place. I was so focused on all her scars and how skinny she was during the first section of the drive to even notice the catheter installed in her arm. Now that I was aware of it, I was extra mindful of how I was holding her, making sure I didn’t rip it out accidentally. We stopped a few more times on the drive home and repeated the same process. Finally, I see our boarders and sigh in relief. We're home!
