Chapter Seven - Friends?

1626 Words
Scarlett I am so done sitting in the damn chair with people constantly coming in and out of this room. At least I have had some food, and PJ has been making sure I am getting water regularly. He seems to have changed his attitude towards me recently. I think it was ever since he saw the big guy in here threatening me.  I can hear footsteps and voices coming closer to the door. Who on earth is coming in this time? I don’t even know what day or time it is. I might ask PJ next time I see him.  “Look, it’s fine. I was told to take a turn and see if she needs anything. If you want, I can call my boss down here to tell you himself.” A male voice was saying just as the door was opening. “No, we don’t need to get anyone down.” Another male voice replied. The door opened fully, and a younger-looking man entered then closed the door behind him. He walked straight over to the side of my chair, opened a fresh bottle of orange juice and offered me a drink. “Who are you? How many damn guys do you need to keep one woman contained and under control?” I said, annoyed.  “Logan said you were a smartass. Sorry, I know you know him as Caleb,” he laughs.  This guy seems different. He seems nicer and doesn’t have the same evil look like the rest of them. Maybe that was the idea. I don’t want to fall into a false sense of security.  “You know nothing about Caleb and me,”  “Caleb is alright, but he is worried sick about you, Scarlett,” he said softly.  “How would you even know that?” I question. “Because I spoke to him,” he said, “He wanted me to come and make sure you are OK,”  Wait, what? Is he serious, or is this all part of some f****d up plan? I eye him suspiciously.  “I am a friend of Caleb’s. He is in London,” he said, “But you can’t tell anyone else that I have spoken to him, or I will be a dead man,”  “Who exactly do you think I am going to tell?” I laughed, and he also had a wee chuckle. “Can you please take a drink of this orange juice now? I will give you some sugar.” He asked me. “Name first, and then I will drink.” I looked at him with raised eyebrows. “Jacob.” He smiled, putting the juice closer to my mouth. I took a small drink at first to get a taste for it. I mean, just because he is saying all this stuff doesn’t necessarily mean he is actually on my side in any of this. The juice was amazing, and I moved my head closer to the bottle to have some more. “I will try and get put on this job to keep an eye on you, but I did just bullshit the guy at the door so that I could get in here just now.” He smirked. “Thank you for doing this for both myself and Caleb.” I smiled at him. “It is the least I can, after everything he did for me, back in the day,”  “Have you always known where he went?” I ask.  Jacob nods and smiles. That tells me just how much Caleb trusts him, so maybe I should too unless this is some bullshit story. Then Jacob will be getting added to my list when I get out of here.  “And he is OK?” I sigh.  “Yes, he is just desperate to get you back,” he smiles.  That made me feel better, knowing Caleb was OK. I was missing him like crazy. I wanted to hug him and not ever let go. I’m so grateful that he is trying his best to get me out of here. I hope he has more than just this one guy on his side, as the number of people I have seen coming and going is ridiculous, and I know PJ has a lot of people on his side. “How long are you able to stay with me?” I asked him. “I can’t stay much longer, I’m afraid, I’m not even meant to be here.” He said with sadness in his eyes. I didn’t have much to say after that. I just sat in silence. I didn’t want to be left on my own again, just waiting for someone to come in and start with more threats about me not being willing to talk. “I’m sorry Scarlett, I will try and get back soon, and I will bring you something to eat and drink.” Jacob smiled at me as he stood up from beside me, ready to leave. “Thank you,” I whisper, “Can you tell him I love and miss him,”  “I will do, promise,” he smiles, “Just hold on for a little longer,” he added before leaving.  I can do that. I can keep fighting for another little while. I need to. I know Caleb will be doing everything he can to find me and as quickly as possible. I should have asked Jacob how long I have been here because I have completely lost track of time and days. I closed my eyes, hoping to get a little rest before someone comes in. I hope Jacob can find a way to come back. At least with him, I know I am safe.  I am worried about Caleb, though. I don’t want him doing this alone! He will end up getting himself killed. I just want to close my eyes for a while and think happy thoughts. “Hello, sweetheart.” PJ’s voice whispered in my ear. “What the hell are you doing?” I asked angrily. “Just thought I would check in with you Scarlett, it looked like you were having a wee nap there.”  “I wasn’t napping. I was just relaxing,” I growled at him. I think he might have been right. I think I did fall asleep for a bit. It certainly felt like I had been sleeping anyway. Sleeping is something I haven’t had much of recently, so my body is tired.  “Well, you have checked in, so now you can piss off and leave me be,” I said as I turned my head away from him and shut my eyes. “Come on, Scarlett, don’t be like that.” He said, “What is wrong? Why are you so cranky, suddenly?”  “I am tired, PJ and I want to go home,”  “That isn’t going to happen, especially since you are not giving them what they want,” he said, shaking his head, “You have the rest of the day to talk, or the guy I scared off will be coming back first thing in the morning, and this time I can’t stop it,”  “Bring the bastard on!” I snap.  I am done with these guys. They are nothing but cowards! I would take every last one of them down single-handedly if I were untied. “Scarlett, don’t be silly. These people are here to hurt or kill. They don’t stop.” He said. “PJ, I’m done. I don’t care anymore,” I said as a tear flowed from my right eye. “Scarlett, please don’t cry,” PJ said as he wiped away the tear. I just sat and looked at him with great sadness in my eyes. I could see him looking at me like he did all those years ago. If I keep going like this, I hope he will feel for me and maybe release my hands for a while or let me have a walk around this damn room. He was still kneeling on the floor next to me, just staring at me. “Scarlett, can I get you some food or a drink?” He asked. “Yes, I would like both and maybe send the girl in with the bucket I need the toilet.” I groaned. “Charlene,” PJ shouted as he left the room. I hated having to go to the toilet in a bucket, but I don’t have any choice just now. The girl who comes in with the bucket seems quite nice, pretty quiet. “How are you doing?” she asked.  “Not so good,” I sigh.  “I am sorry they are putting you through this,” she whispers, “Logan made a mistake a long time ago, and this is too much for that mistake,”  “Do you know Logan?” I asked.  “Yes,” she states simply.  I had a feeling there was more to that story, but I wasn’t going to ask questions. She let me do my business, giving me a soft smile before going away.  I can’t take much more of this! It was degrading! I was angry, annoyed, sad and whichever other emotions. I was feeling them all at once.
