Rose POV...
Miles away from the house and the crime scene, I closed my eyes counting my breath as I tried to keep my nerves in check.
"This has finally happened, I am finally free," I said to myself as I picked at my fingers, nervously looking out of the window.
I never really thought I would be free from the chains Keith had put me in all this year, but here I am, free and far away from him, but there was still a little grip of uncertainty churning deep within me, and also so many unanswered questions hovering around in my head.
"Being married to Keith and being that perfect little wife for him was all the life I knew, so what would happen to me now that I don't have to play my little role anymore?
"Who would I be now that I am no longer Rose Richards, the elegant wife of Keith Richards? " I asked myself incessantly as I looked over at Zena, who was firmly focused on driving.
“Zena...." I whispered out her name.
“Yes Rose, " She answered with her focus still firmly fixed on the road.
"Zena, I'm scared, I'm confused. What would happen to me now? I asked, ignoring the piercing feeling in my chest.
"Zena's gaze drifted in my direction, as I could see a hint of seriousness with a mix of anger in her eyes.
"Rose, don't do that, don't speak like that, you are finally free from that beast. You should be all smiles and happy. You are free to live your life as you please, so start acting like that," Zena said as she immediately shifted her focus back to the road.
I sighed heavily, nodding my head in response to her words.
" She was indeed right, I am a free woman, free to live my life as I please. But why does my heart still feel otherwise, why do I still fear that Keith won't stay locked up for so long and will come back to take me into his crawls? Why don't I feel free," I asked myself as I tried so hard not to think about Keith and everything that just happened back at the house and also stop myself from thinking about the hooded figure with those eyes that still haunt and invade my mind.
Zena soon stopped the car and she turned to look at me with a hopeful smile on her face. She held my hand tightly in hers, comforting me with every single gaze.
“Listen to me, Rose. You are going to start a new life far away from here, in a place where no one knows who you are or knows anything about your past. You will be a new person," she said, smiling.
"But you know, you can't travel by air because that would expose you, so you are going to get to wherever you choose by road, and also here is some money to add to what you have gotten from that assbag. I know it is not much... Sister, okay, but I know it would go a long way.
“Also, here are your new documents. You have to change your hair color and also wear some contact lenses to change the color of your eyes so that you can go unrecognized passing the border," Zena said, handing me some documents in a paper bag.
I didn't know exactly what to say or do as I looked at the paper bag shaking nervously, my heart was beating so loudly in my chest and, for a quick moment, I was short of breath.
I took in several deep breaths, hoping no more, like desperate to free myself from this grip of anxiety because everything felt surreal. I never really expected that I had to go through all these changes.
So, with shaky hands, I looked at the contents of the paper bag and in it, I saw a different name.
"Do I have to change my name,' I asked my sister.
Yes, Rose... Because this..." she said, signaling to me," was just killed by her husband, so Rose Richards is dead," she said with all seriousness.
Shivering at the thought of it as the realization soon dawned on me.
"Soon everyone would hear of my demise, and Rose Richards would have died to the world.
I didn't know how to feel wiped off and forgotten from this very existence, but if it was going to keep me far away from my Monster, I'm willing to do it and more.
'Nodding my head, I looked at the documents more closely, reading out my new identity.
" Tyler Cain"... The name doesn't sound so bad," I said to myself, as I continued to memorize the name so as not to forget it.
Looking back up to meet Zena's gaze, I unconsciously swelled a huge lump. I didn't know what was in my throat. As I asked her something, I immediately knew I would regret it.
“Zena...What about Keith, what would happen to him," I asked, regretting my words immediately.
Zena just looked at me laughing hard, but I knew deeply that she was angry at what I had just said.
”Rose, don't tell me that you still care about what happened to that man," she asked, as her laughter turned into an angry look now on her face.
"No Zena... I don't care, but there is a little part of me that still wants to know," I murmured softly.
“Okay sis, if you must know when he wakes up, he is going to meet the worst surprise of his life, he is going to be accused of killing his wife and destroying her body, and that means he is going to jail for a very long time and not even his connections would save him from a murder charge," Zena said overly excited as she started the car again and drove off.
Nodding my head slowly, I still had some mixed feelings about all of this. I knew Keith was a beast and a terrible husband, but there was still a little part of me that prayed every night that he would change and become the man I fell in love with, but unfortunately, I lost every hope of that ever happening.
So, closing my eyes, I allowed the darkness to consume me as I tried to take in all that happened today, as my thoughts unconsciously wandered back again to that hooded figure that captured me with his words so smooth and its eye so captivating pulling me into an endless abyss.
