CHAPTER 4 - Run Devil Run

1926 Words
Harper woke up in a king-sized bed. She realized that she was in Adam’s bedroom because she already went into his room last night before she fell asleep. She yawned sleepily as she stretched out her hands. Did Adam carry her last night into this bed? Where is he? She tiptoed towards the door and opened it slowly. She popped her head out first to check for the surroundings, but her nose smelled something burnt from the kitchen. She walked closer towards the kitchen to see Adam struggling to make some breakfast. She leaned at the wall while looking at him interestingly. “Good morning…” she said. Adam turned his head, and he was shocked to see her bottomless. She only wears her oversized shirt that reaches half of her thigh. With her messy hair, she looked even more irresistible. He dropped the slightly burnt pancakes to the floor. “Shoot!” he cursed out loud. She chuckled after seeing his clumsy side. “Do you need some help there?” Harper said as she walked even closer. Adam gulped down and went back a few steps. “What are you doing?” Adam asked as he kept his eyes on her. “Duh? Helping you making some breakfast…What else?” she said as she rolled back her eyes. Harper tied her hair with some elastic band, which caused Adam to droll over her slender neck. Damn it! This girl just didn’t know when to stop. “You can sit there…I’ll make the breakfast,” Harper said as she smiled at him. Adam quickly looked away and went into the living room. He turned on the TV and randomly picked some movie on what Harper called Netflix. He purposedly chooses some comedy movies to distract his pervert thought. “Breakfast readyy!!” Harper claimed excitedly as she brings two portions of pancakes into the living room. She sat beside Adam and handed him his pancakes. Adam looked at the perfectly shaped pancakes on his lap like a treasured gold. “What’s wrong, Adam? Why aren’t you eating your pancakes?” Harper asked as she continues to chew on her food. “Nothing…It’s just…This is the first time I ate pancakes.” He admitted. Harper widened her eyes in shock. “How come? Are you even from this country? What did your mom usually make in the morning?” Adam just smiled at her and started to cut his pancakes. The first bite was unbelievable to him. He never tastes anything this good before. It was sweet and warm…and it makes him happy. “How was it?” Harper asked as she worried that he didn’t like it. “I like this one better than that PB&J.,” Harper burst out laughing. He’s the most interesting man she ever met. “Can you teach me how?” he asked while pouting his mouth. Harper stopped laughing, “What? You mean making pancakes?” Harper asked. He nodded shyly. “I’m not an expert either. But I can teach you some basic techniques.” She then said. His face lits up like a ray of morning sunshine.  **************** Harper went back to her home by herself. Even though Adam insisted on taking her back, she firmly refused because she didn’t want to trouble him any further. She hurriedly went back to her home before her first class started in two hours. “Mom…Dad…I’m home!” she shouted. Not long after, she heard a breaking glass sound from the second floor. “Why you never listened to me? We will send Harper to another school!” Dad’s shouting voice suddenly erupted from her parents’ bedroom. Harper went closer into the door to get a better hearing of their fight since it was about her this time. Her parents are always arguing over anything, and she is never interested in eavesdropping. Still, at the mention of her name, she just felt like she has to know. “Why are you being so dull, Daniel? Can’t you see that your daughter likes to dance? You’re basically killing her dream!” mom shouted back, defending me. “Dancing is not a career, Matilda! It will bring her nowhere!” Dad roared in anger. “You’re such a selfish man, Daniel! I’ll bring Harper with me. We’re getting a divorce tomorrow!” her mom stated in a final tone. “No, I’m taking Harper with me out from this country! I’ll bring her back to England with me!” He talked back. Harper burst into their room without notice, just when her mother threw a flower vase at her dad. The vase hit the wall, and a piece of glass scratched Harper’s face. “Harper? Oh My God, Baby…I’m so sorry! I never meant to hurt you…” Her mom went into hugging her as soon as she realized that she just hurt her only daughter. Harper’s eyes were filled with tears right now. “Harper, you’re coming with me tomorrow! Go pack your things now!” Her dad yanked her away from her mom. His grip was tight that it was hurtful for her. Her mom won’t give up as well. She grabbed her other’s hand, trying to pull her back. ”She’s not going anywhere with you, Daniel!” her mom shouted again. “Mom! Dad! You’re hurting me! Stop it!” Harper cried out. They both release their grip, and Harper fell to the floor, crying. A sharp glass pierced through her knees as she fell. She winched in pain. “Look what you did to your daughter, Matilda!” Her dad blamed his wife. “Shut up, Daniel! This is YOUR FAULT also!” her mom snarled back. “Can you both STOP IT!!” Harper screamed and ran out of the room. She went into her room and took out her luggage. She put all of her clothes inside while sobbing, she will leave this house for good! She can’t stand it anymore. She wiped her tears and dragged her oversized luggage with her. Now she has nowhere to go. She sat on the side of the street, sobbing for her miserable life. This life is unfair to her. Her dad is quite wealthy, and she never lacked anything financially, unless for love from her parents. ****************** Adam waited for her in front of the class door, but she never came. He looked at his watch, and the class will start in five minutes. He let out a deep sigh, “Are humans never appreciate punctuality?” she suddenly reminded him of his other brother sloth. He shook his head and entered the class before her. He even put an empty seat for her beside him. That’s why when a girl flirted with him and asked if the seat beside him empty, he instantly refused and said that it was taken by someone else. He must’ve gone mad. Why did he have to refuse such a beautiful woman for Harper? The class had started halfway, but Harper never comes. He pulled out his phone from his pocket and decided to send her a text message. Where are you? He then pressed send on his phone’s screen. He waited for fifteen minutes before she finally replied. Not feeling good today. She replied shortly. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. She was perfectly fine when she left this morning. Is human that fragile that they got sick easily? What should he do to make her feel better? He googled “How to take care of a sick person.” And the result came out rather boring. Bring some healthy food such as fruit. He nodded. He decided that he would buy some fruit for her on his way home. *********************** In his hands were two full bags of fruits that he personally picked for a sick person. He fished out his phone to call her. On the third ring, she finally picks up. “Harper, where are you?” he asked. “I’m at the studio…What’s the matter, Adam?” She said hoarsely. “I’m coming to your place right now…Are you crying?” he asked in shock. “No, I’m not…” She hasn’t finished her words, but he already hung up the phone. She let out a deep sigh. She curled up back in the cold studio by herself, sobbing. Mrs.Clara will not be coming into the studio, because today there is no ballet lesson. It only took him ten minutes to reach the gallery. He went panic as soon as he heard her crying on the phone. She is not sick. Something must be bothering her. As he entered the studio, he called for her name. The lights were off, so it was hard for him to search for her. “Harper??” he shouted. Harper went out and turned on the lights. Her eyes and nose were red. It was evident that she just cried. “Harper, what’s wrong?” he asked as he walked closer towards her. Harper unexpectedly ran towards him and hugged him tightly on his waist. “Adam, dad wants to take me with him to England!” He wasn’t sure that he heard her right. “What? But, Why??” He couldn’t possibly let that happened. He just met her yesterday! He wasn’t prepared to be separated from her so soon. “He never supported my dreams, Adam! He said that dancing is not a career. He wanted me to be a doctor like him…” she continues to sob in his chest. He put both of his hands on her shoulders. “Hey, listen! You’re not going anywhere, Harper.” Harper looked into his hazel eyes. And it almost felt like she could believe his words. “Thank you, Adam. But you shouldn’t be here. Just let me be alone for now..” Harper said as she wiped her tears. “I bring you the fruit…I thought you were sick…and I googled…” Adam hasn’t finished, but Harper burst into laughter again. “You did what? Did you actually google about that? And that was an excessive amount of fruit I might get diarrhea.” Harper laughs, holding her stomach.  Adam put both hands on his waist while raising one eyebrow at her. “You humans really don’t know how to appreciate a kind intention.” He scoffed. “I’m sorry, but you are very amusing, Adam. Thank you for making me laugh.” She said genuinely as she looked at him. Adam moved a strand of hair from her face and tugged it behind her ear. “Promised me you will stop crying…” Adam said softly. Harper couldn’t help but feel a stir in her heart at his gesture. This man is fascinating.
