Getting a reward

All of the people inside the castle hall are surprised. It is not because they feel that Lance’s request is too much but on the contrary, Lance’s request is harder to achieve but it is overall easy to fulfill. If someone normal is looking for a mana technique, they might find it hard and challenging. However, for the kingdom’s royal family, they have a lot of them in the royal treasury. Finding the best one is hard, but if they just need to pick any mana technique, it will be easy. However, since Lance specified the mana technique that he needs is for an elf, the kingdom treasury might have it. They don’t have to give him the best one, just any mana technique for an elf.

The king and Elmer exchange gazes as if waiting for confirmation. After waiting for a while, the king gives his command.

“Elmer, go to the treasury and find if there’s a mana technique for an elf. Meanwhile, Lance can wait here with us.”

“Royal father, how about we have Lance tell us more about him while we wait?” The one who is suggesting the idea surprisingly isn’t princess Alicia but surprisingly the crown prince.

“Oh, that’s a good idea. Do you mind sharing your story with us?”

Lance didn’t know about the circumstances of the owner of his current body but he could easily made-up stories about it. And so, he starts to tell fake stories about his childhood, and when the monster starts to attack the village, he synchronized his story with Clyde’s as he heard about what Clyde told in the hall yesterday.

Hearing that the story that Lance told them is basically the same as Clyde’s the suspicion on the king’s eye lessened. Not to mention when he told them that he is at the church yesterday because he is walking around the city is making sense. If he is already familiar with the city, there’s no reason for him to visit the church that is clearly out of nowhere.

Just when Lance finished recounting all the experience so far, Elmer comes back to the hall, bringing with him three worn-out books.

“Your majesty, the treasury has three mana techniques for an elf. However, I should confirm it once again with Lance, is this really the reward that you want?”

Lance was confused and nodded but then Elmer explains it to him why he asked.

“The mana techniques for an elf that we have is actually incomplete. Not to mention that they are all only of low quality. There’s no guarantee that you will be able to practice it since there’s also a big chance that they are fake mana techniques.”

Although the mana technique is stored in the kingdom’s treasury, there’s no telling whether it was a valid mana technique or not. After all, the kingdom is made up of humans and there’s no way to check whether it is a real mana technique or not. The kingdom itself probably managed to get the mana techniques from an elf captive or an elf village that they raided a long time ago. Even Elmer couldn’t be sure as to where the kingdom gains this mana technique. That is also why previously the people inside the hall are surprised when Lance is asking for this.

“May I know first why are you asking for this? From what I see, you are a halfling but you’re clearly not a half-elf.” Elmer asked curiously.

“To tell the truth, I have a childhood friend which is an elf. She has just lost her mother recently and I hope that if she knows that she got the chance to learn about mana, her spirit will be reignited.”

Hearing Lance’s explanation, Elmer couldn’t see anything wrong with it. After all, Clyde also tells him about Lance and Milla’s relationship before. The princess however thinking about it from another point of view.

“As expected of mister Lance, he doesn’t use this opportunity to take advantage of the royal family or asking for something that could benefit himself. He is using this to cheer up his childhood friend. However, is the person that he wants to help is only a childhood friend? I have seen some half-elf and indeed, they are beautiful. Does he like her?”

Of course, princess Alicia didn’t say that out loud. She is muttering that inside her heart.

After hearing Lance’s reason, the king allowed Lance to take the mana technique. He didn’t look into them as if there’s nothing that he could discern even if he looks at it. so, he just took one mana technique book randomly and gives his thanks to the king.

“Thank you, your majesty. If there’s nothing else, can I go back?”

The king gives his permission but surprisingly, princess Alicia called out to him.

“Wait, mister Lance. If you’re free, would you like to have lunch with me?” Even princess Alicia herself couldn’t believe that she is so bold to ask Lance out. The queen is smiling seeing this but the king and the crown prince have a different reaction. The minute changes in their expression couldn’t escape Lance’s eye but already have a plan to take princess Alicia for himself so he wouldn’t let this opportunity to escape.

“Miss, no, princess Alicia, can you first let me go back and give the mana technique book to my friend? After that, I can accompany you for the whole day.”

“Then, how about I go with you to meet with your friend? I would like to meet her too.”

Lance looked a bit surprised but then he nods as there’s nothing wrong with it. There’re also several reasons as to why Lance does this. Firstly, the reason he asked for an elf mana technique is to mask the technique that Milla is learning. It gives a justification to how Milla is able to handle mana later on. With the princess as a witness, the credibility of Milla learning mana can be proven.

Secondly, as Lance is planning to take the princess for himself, he kind of wanting to give the princess an illusion that Milla liked him too. To give the princess some kind of pressure and justification that there’s nothing wrong in liking him since there’s already another person liking Lance.

Thirdly, he wanted to see the reaction of the king and the crown prince. He could feel that the king seemed to want to arrange a marriage for Alicia and send her away from the kingdom for political advantages. As for the crown prince, he just wants to get rid of the princess. Either it was through killing her or arrange her to be together with someone with some requirements as if relieving her rights to the throne for pursuing her love. For example, if Alicia wants to be together with Lance, as his status is of that halfling, it wasn’t on par with the royalty status. She either needs to not become royalty anymore or gave up the throne.
