Chapter 5

Mom was beyond excited come Friday night. She fixed my hair and make-up. She kept complimenting that I look good in the black-sequinned halter dress that flows until my mid-thigh. It’s not too short and not that revealing. And upon looking at my reflection in the mirror, I look fine.  My hair is tied up in a high ponytail while my face is slightly made up. I did not want some heavy make-up because I don’t want the hassle of always going to the bathroom just to check if my eyeliner smudged or to retouch.  “You look gorgeous!” she beamed while standing behind me. “You’re really my daughter.”  I chuckled and shook my head. She always says that whenever she says I’m beautiful. Well, my father is handsome, too. I don’t think I only got it from my mother. I got it from both of them.  “Anyway, what time will Synne come and pick you up?” she asked.  I looked down at my wristwatch. “She’s probably on the way now. She said she’ll pick me up at eight.”  Mom nodded before fixing my vanity table. “You have fun, okay?” I nodded and smiled. I am excited and nervous at the same time. This is actually the first time that I am attending a party. I haven’t been to a birthday party much less a club, so this is a first for me. I believe this is also a first for Synne.  I checked the contents of my purse and when I am sure that I got everything, I went down to wait for Synne to pick me up. Dad was in the living room, sitting on the couch while reading some reports. He usually does not bring work home but he had to come home early today so this is understandable. He looked up when he noticed me walking down the stairs.  He raised his brow when he saw what I am wearing. “No s*x with a stranger,” he told me. I frowned and rolled my eyes. “If he’s not a stranger, then?” I asked, trying to sound sarcastic. He narrowed his eyes at me. “No s*x at all,” he reiterated. “And if you’re not home by two in the morning, I will drive to the party myself to pick you up. And when it happens, you better not be drunk or you’ll be grounded.” I rolled my eyes. Here he is again with his strict ways. He’s always acting this tough on me like I am going to be a wild girl. Mom was even chill about it. He’s the one that’s being so uptight. “I will be home before two in the morning, Dad,” I told him before hearing Synne honking at the front gate. “Synne is here. Bye, Dad!” “You’re going?” Mom shouted from the kitchen. “Yes, Mom. I’ll see you later!” I yelled back. “Okay! Have fun, honey!” she told me and that was my cue to go. I rushed out as fast as I can so Dad won’t have his chance to talk to Synne about his conditions. I don’t want Synne to be affected by my curfew. Besides, I have no plans of getting drunk. I was only going there to have fun and mingle with other people. I need to expand my circle of friends. “Wow! You look fab!” Synne commented in awe when I got into the shotgun of his car. I smiled at her. She’s wearing a red spaghetti-strapped dress and her hair is down with huge curls. She looked like a model. Between the two of us, she’s always the one who is fashionable. Sometimes, she even asks my mother what’s good to wear. “You look beautiful, too, Synne,” I told her. She chuckled. “I need to find myself a boyfriend,” she told me. “Keshia is already there and she said there is this handsome man from Chicago. He was invited to the party because his girlfriend is here.” I narrowed my eyes. “Who?” I asked even though I won’t know him anyway. I don’t even know the names of some of my classmates in high school. How would I even know someone who lives on the opposite side of America? “I forgot,” Synne replied. “I don’t know why he’s important though. I only know that he’s from Chicago and that he’s handsome. I need to see first to believe if he’s really handsome.” I laughed and shook my head. “Right. To see if to believe,” I seconded. *** And boy, he was really handsome. I don’t know if the person I am looking at right now is a human or a god. He’s tall, has thick brows, deep brown eyes, and a cutting jawline. His body built is a little on the lean side but no one can deny that he still looks sexy. He smiled at me—at me and Synne. “Welcome to the party,” he said in a low baritone. “My name’s Bullet.” Bullet. Even his name sounds so angsty. “Thank you, Bullet,” Synne said because she was the only one who could handle the visual shock between the two of us. I can’t believe someone as handsome as he has ever existed! Synne pulled me inside while squealing because of Bullet. “Oh, my god! He’s really handsome!” I nodded in agreement. “Too bad he’s already taken…” she added in a disappointed tone. I shook my head and laughed. “Don’t worry. There is a lot of fish in the ocean, babe…” And just as I said that, the door opened revealing a jam-packed house party. Familiar and new faces come and go. Almost everyone is holding a red cup. The house was huge. The living room has glass walls and so we could see the people by the pool area. There is also a huge backyard where some people are, too. “Where should we go?” I asked Synne because I am a little overwhelmed by everything. “We have to find Keshia first,” she answered. “She said she’s by the pool area. Let’s go and check.” I nodded and held her hand tight while walking in the living room to go out to the pool area. There were a lot of people laughing by the couch and I don’t know any of them until my eyes accidentally landed on two familiar orbs. I swallowed hard and looked away immediately. Xavion is here. He’s really here. I didn’t think he would be here even though he already told me that he would be attending. I didn’t want to believe it but here he is now. My heart started to beat fast because of the impact of his intense stare. He’s watching me like I am a movie that he enjoys the most. Usually, I wouldn’t even care but because of the stories that I hear about him, I couldn’t help but feel scared. Now, I have to make sure that I am out of his sight at all times.
