“Hey…” my seatmate called me.
I looked at her and smiled. “Hi!” I saw that her name is Keshia from the keychain on her phone case.
Sporting a long blonde hair, she smiled at me. Her blue eyes make her look like a royalty. She's cute and bubbly. “What's your name?”
“Anjelina,” I replied.
“I’m Keshia,” she beamed and extended her hand to me. “Nice to meet you, Anjelina!”
“Nice to meet you, too,” I replied while shaking her hand.
I didn’t know how to approach her. I don’t know how to expand this conversation. I feel like I am already done talking to her even though I still want to know her. Maybe we could be friends.
“What’s your major?”
“Business,” I replied. “You?”
“Same!” she beamed and got her schedule from her bag before showing it to me. “Come on. Let’s see if we have the same classes.”
I nodded and grabbed my schedule inside my bag. We began comparing our schedule and realized that we have four classes together. Now, I’m actually relieved because I know someone with four classes. I wouldn’t be scared anymore.
Well, not like I would be scared to go to class. It’s just that now that I know someone, I have something to look forward to.
“We don’t have the same lunch time today, though,” she frowned. “But tomorrow, can we eat together? I don’t know anyone yet and I am scared to talk to someone else.”
I smiled and nodded. “No worries, Keshia,” I told her. “When we have time, I might introduce you to my best friend. She’s taking up pre-law. We are classmates with her for two classes.”
She grinned excitedly. “Really? That’s great!” she beamed. “I really had a hard time adjusting here because I am from Canada.”
“Really?” I asked. “So, you grew up in Canada?”
She nodded. “Ontario,” she replied. “My parents got divorced. They agreed that I get to stay with my mother until I move in with my Dad when I am in college.”
I nodded. “So, your father is from Nevada?”
She shook her head. “He’s from California but I decided to go to Nevada so he wouldn’t be able to monitor every single move of mine.”
I stared at her, confused and questioning, but at some point, I get where she’s coming from. She has not been with her father because she grew up with her mother so she might not have had time with her father. Imagining it could already make me feel really awkward.
She chuckled. “Don’t worry. It’s not like I am affected by this,” she said. “Also, I am actually benefiting from this.”
“How?”
She grabbed her wallet and took out two of her credit cards. “See…” she showed me. “One from Mom and one from Dad. This is the only best thing that happened when my parents got divorced. They thought I would need a lot of money to compensate for not giving me a complete family. I never thought about its benefits until now.”
I laughed because that was totally unexpected. “That’s a good one,” I told her.
She has definitely showed me her personality seconds after meeting her and I would have to say that I actually like her. Her positivity despite not living with her parents is admirable.
I could only imagine how my parents would react when I tell them that I want to be independent. Mom would most definitely cry. She can’t even go on a project outside the state because she doesn’t want to be away from me for too long. She was excited with every milestone that I got and I believe that it’s because that is what her parents did not give her before.
But anyway, I am not complaining. My parents are not that strict to me and they still give me the freedom to choose and live my life.
After talking to Keshia about our lives, the door opened, revealing our professor for the subject and we both directed our focus on her.

“Are you done eating?” Synne asked me.
I nodded. I wasn’t really hungry because Keshia and I ate pizza during our free period a while ago. “Keshia and I ate a while ago.”
She nodded before drinking. She had already met Keshia yesterday and they clicked instantly. They both loved a band and they have been raving about them since they both have concert tickets for their reunion concert coming later this month.
It’s nice to see them bond well. At least I won’t need to worry about how they would get together. As a matter of fact, they would be going to the mall later today to buy something to wear for the party on Friday. I would love to come with them but I promised my mother that I’d go home early to help her in baking.
I don’t know if that would work, though. Neither of us have knowledge in the kitchen. I don’t know how they bake. I don’t think my mother knows how to do that either. She can’t even fix a nice steak.
“Did you tell your mother that you’re going to a party tomorrow?”
I nodded. “She is excited and immediately gave me options on what to wear.”
Synne nodded. “I bet your mother has a massive wardrobe.”
I smirked. “You bet,” I told her before looking at the entrance where I saw a group of men talking to someone.
I narrowed my eyes as that got my attention. They don’t look friendly at all. The group of muscular and tall men looked like they are ganging up on that small, thin boy. One man, seemingly their leader, pushed the poor boy.
“Oh, my god... “ I heard Synne gasping beside me. “Are they bullying the freshman?”
I hated seeing scenes like this. Back when I was in high school, there would always be girls who would step on others just to get what they want. I hated them for bullying the powerless just to make them feel that they are in control, that they are powerful.
I pursed my lips and clenched my fists, wanting to go and step up. “f*****g assholes,” I muttered under my breath. “Do they think they’re still kids?”
Synne let out a heavy sigh. “This really happens in the campus. We can’t do anything about this,” she said. “Just let them. Word’s out in the college of law that there really are fraternities going around here. It gets even bloody at one point.”
I turned to her. “What do you mean?”
She shrugged. “Do you remember Xavion Zachory?” she asked. “He’s one of the high ranks of a powerful fraternity that’s why he’s untouchable.”
I pursed my lips and nodded. I know that and that’s why I am still scared of him.
“Speaking of the devil…” Synne nodded at the direction of the group of men.
I looked and saw the bullies scramming away from the scene just by the sight of Xavion, leaving only the victim behind.
I watched as Xavion stopped and gave the victim a look before running away, too. He raised his brow before shaking it off and started walking towards the cafeteria to buy his food like he witnessed nothing. He just went on like it’s normal for him to witness something like that.
“See?” Synne began again. “He’s really untouchable. He hasn’t done anything but those boys ran away just at the sight of him. He’s that powerful.”
I sighed and my eyes went to where Xavion is. Is he really a bad man, though? Why do I feel like there’s more to him than what’s on the surface?
I sighed and shook all of my thoughts away. It should not concern me anymore. Besides, I have a lot of things to work on. Thinking about someone who is not vital to my college life is not one of them.
