CHAPTER 5: LET THE SEARCH BEGIN

2734 Words
For what felt like the thousandth time Nick covered his ears with his pillow, farmer Wilson was really not going to stop with his shenanigans until Nick gave in to his demands. The old farmer had had his speakers on blast for about close to an hour, trying to get Nick to come out of his house and he was not in the mood. The operation had worn Nick out so much that he had to turn some of his customers away, because he could not strain his body by getting under a car or bending beneath the hood of a car. Nick had finally had enough of the old man he did not know what he was going to do but he was sure not just going to talk it out with the old man. Nick got out of his bed and walked through his house, it’s been days since he’s walked out of his room, deciding to keep everything he would need inside his room. He got outside his house and walked onto his lawn and there farmer was on his own lawn looking at Nick as he exited his house. Nick watched as farmer Wilson walked up to the loud speaker and put it off. The smile on famer Wilson’s face angered Nick to the core, he stood on his porch, eagerly wanting Nick to react to his taunts, but Nick just stood there. “What’s the matter my boy, don’t you like the music!” farmer Wilson yelled out at Nick, knowing well that Nick did not enjoy the loud music. He could not understand why everyone else had farms that were so far apart yet he and farmer Wilson was so close to each other that they were practically glued to each other. “You’re enjoying this right?” he asked Farmer Wilson who simply just laughed it off, placing both his hands onto his large belly, trying to contain his laughter. Nick could not understand why he was holding onto this farm so much, the rivalry between his grandfather and farmer Wilson had begun long before he was born and it’s sad to say that Nick feared that it might escalate to hi children, something that he did not like one bit. “Of course I am, so are you going to give me back my land that that grandfather of yours stole from me” bile of anger rose up in Nick and for a moment he contemplated walking over to him and beating up the old man. But Nick stopped himself, he knew farmer Wilson too well and that old man always has something up his sleeves and there was no way that Nick was going injure himself further. “Well then you must be getting old farmer Wilson, because as I remember my great grandfather brought this land from your father” Farmer Wilson’s face changed from laughter to immense anger, Nick knew right then and then that he had hit a nerve, he also knew that once you hit farmer Wilson’s nerves meant that that the old man was bound to retaliate. “Listen here you fool, if I were you I wouldn’t continue fighting a fight that you would definitely lose!” The old man yelled at Nick from across the fencing separating their two yards. From the outside Nike did not look scared but deep inside he was terrified, he’d heard stories about farmer Wilson and how both he and his father dealt with competition. Nick knew that he was in no position to rile up the old any further but he just had to get his word across, although he knew very well that the old man was from changing his ways. “My great grandfather brought this farm from your father, who I might add just like you, your family isn’t so good when it comes to managing money” Nick walked and entered his house, from behind him he could hear farmer Wilson yelling out curses at him but Nick had no time for that. Nick took a peak at his fridge and his entire mood was spoiled, there was almost nothing in his fridge and unfortunately for Nick that meant that he had to go into town and but something at the super market. As much as Nick did not like the idea, it was that or he was destined to die of hunger even if that meant that he had to go out into town and deal with the endless questions about his health. ** Amber sat at the terrace of the coffee shop which overlooked the parking lot, which was not really much to see other than happy couples that walked hand in hand with their kids. Something in her ached and a piece of her wanted too just drive back to her sister and brother in-laws home and just tell them the real reason why she was here, added to that she would just take the first flight home and stay in her room till she felt better. She sipped on her cup of lemonade, which was the best that she had ever tasted in her life and that’s when her phone rang. Amber looked at the caller ID and Amber saw that it was none other than her sister, so she answered the phone. “They Amber, should we come and get you maybe?” Viola asked Amber. Her eldest sister sounded concerned and Amber was not surprised at all at her sister’s behavior. Ever since they had been young her sister Viola always watched out for both her and Scarlet. “No, I’ll make my way home” Amber responded, knowing quite well that she needed more time to deal with matters at hand and that meant that she had to find her donor quick. “But—“ “Viola please do not worry. Look if I need anything from you I promise I’ll call you” she heard nothing from the other end of the call for a few seconds, until Viola finally decided to respond to her. “It’s okay, I’ll see you when you get home” she said goodbye to her sister and ended the call, the coffee shop was almost empty and no waiter was around so Amber stood up from her chair so that she could order another lemonade from the counter. As quick as lightning someone knocked into Amber sending the remainder of the lemonade spilt onto her baby blue dress. “What the—“ Amber yelled but she did not finish her sentence because she finally looked up from her stained dress and she saw who it was. “You?” she yelled out at the person who was the cause of the spill on her dress and it was none other than Nick, he was the same man that caused the first spillage on her designer outfit when them two had first met. “Hey Amber, I did not know that you were in town” Nick told her but Amber was not interested in hearing anything that Nick had to say. All that Amber cared about at the moment was that her dress was stained. Amber could not understand why it was that Nick and she would always meet in the worst situations possible. She listened in anger as Nick babbled away, forgetting that he had ruined her dress. “Just stop it!” she yelled at him, causing Nick to stop talking. Nick knew that he was babbling and saying pretty much anything to keep Amber from walking away. He did not understand how every time he spoke to Amber, his mind always wondered away but yet stayed in the same spot to admire her beauty. “I’m so sorry for ruining your dress… again” Amber irritably placed her hand onto her hip, trying not to burst out of anger. “Nick, why is it that when whenever the two of us meet it’s always you spilling something onto me” Amber asked Nick, sounding serious and making sure that Nick knew that. Nick said nothing, instead she looked at both his hands, and she saw that he had shopping bags in his hands. This time before Nick could get anything out of his mouth Amber walked away from him, leaving the glass of lemonade onto the counter, and leaving a few bills onto the counter. Nick smelt Amber’s fragrance as she walked past him, he shut his eye’s and all he could see was here in his mind. He smiled to himself; he knew what she did not know. Amber did not know that she was carrying a piece of himself in her. Nick limped towards the counter and he turned to look behind him and he saw that a few town’s people were looking at him and whispering, that was exactly what Nick hated about small towns. He hated the fact that everyone always had something to talk about and today he was on everyone’s lips. “Excuse me sir but what should I get you?” nick snapped out of his dreaming state, he looked up and saw the clerk, and he smiled at her. “Sorry about that. I actually want some spring rolls please, two dozen” He told the lady at the counter. She handed him the rolls and he paid her with a smile on his face. He limped out of the coffee shop with a smile plastered on his face, although he had just been insulted by Amber yet again that did not bother him. She did have a piece of him inside her, whether she knew it or not. ** The ride home in the taxi was a slow and silent to top it off the ride Amber was stuck inside her own head. She did not know what had happened to her in the coffee shop but the connection between Nick and her was stronger. She lashed out in anger but this time it was different, this time there was an unfamiliar pull towards him. She could not believe that she even yelled at him differently, holding back her anger because she was afraid, afraid that she might hurt his feelings. When have you ever cared about Nick’s feelings? She mentally asked herself, worrying that maybe her new kidney had been affecting her brain or even worse, she was getting softer and that was not good for her as a business woman who demanded respect from her workers. “Ma’am we have arrived” The driver called out to her, causing her to snap out of her daydream that was going South with every second that passed by. Visions of Nick holding and caressing her made her neck warm and her mouth water for I kisses. What are you saying, Amber? She mentally asked herself, because she had no idea what was happening to her. The driver called out to her again and this time she smiled and apologized to him, she handed him a few notes and she stepped out of the taxi that stopped right in front of both her sister and brother in-law’s ranch. Amber found herself right in front of the door, not knowing how she had even walked to the door, because her mind was everywhere else except where she was walking. Amber reached out her hand to unlock the door but before then her sister unlocked the door, looking relieved to see her. “Hey, you’re back” Viola told her sister, not hiding the excitement in her voice as she made way for Amber to walk pass her and into the house. Amber walked into the main house and she placed her hand bag onto the couch, followed by her sitting down. “Of course I’m back. Are you so sick and tired of me that you wouldn’t want me to come back to house” Amber joked but Viola did not seem to find that funny. Viola walked over to her sister and sat next to her, she raised her hand to feel her younger sister’s forehead. “Amber, are you sure that you’re okay?” Viola asked her sister, hoping to get the truth this time from her. She knew that relaxation was not all that her sister was looking for, because her actions had been strange for the past few days. She knew her younger sister as a busy woman who would often neglect her health and forget to take a vacation all with the hopes of focusing on being the best designer in the world. Amber rolled her eyes at her older sister, who did not seem to be buying into her lie that she was indeed okay and that all that she needed was a break. “Why are you asking me yet again Viola?” “Well mother called me like, let’s say a million times because she wanted to know how you were doing” “What did you tell her?” Amber asked her sister with hast, anything that Viola could have said to her could mean the difference between her staying with her sister and going home. “Don’t worry, I told her that you were okay and that you went out for some coffee… in this hot Texan weather” “I did not go out for coffee instead I went for some lemonade and I- never mind” Amber stopped herself from telling her sister what had happened between Nick and herself at the coffee shop that afternoon. But unfortunately for her, her eldest sister was not going to let things go so easy. “What happened Amber, you either tell me or you’ll have to tell mom” Amber sighed, she had to say something otherwise her other was sure to make sure that she took the first flight back to New york City that afternoon. “I met that Nick guy again, you l know, Tate’s mechanic” “That’s great! I haven’t seen him in a while. But why aren’t you excited about it, he’s single” “Gross! I would never be interested in a mechanic of all people” “Oh come on Amber, the two of you would make a great couple” “Oh please Viola, I’ll bet you a thousand bucks if I ever dated a man like him. Just think about it, he’s all dirty and covered in oil and he never looks where he goes”  Amber caught the rise in her sister’s eyebrows from her peripheral vision and that’s when she knew that she had said more than she should. “Why would you say that?” Viola asked her sister, who sat on the couch crossed legs and her arms over her chest area. “Why would I say what?” “ I mean why would you say that he does not look where he’s going, is this really about that time when he knocked into you and spilt coffee all over you designer—“ Amber quickly stood up from her chair and stopped her foot onto the ground. “It’s not because of that day, it’s because of today! He knocked into me today sending my lemonade flying into the air and landing on my dress. Viola smiled at the fact that Amber’s face was now red with anger, yes her sister had a short temper ad all but this was something different and Viola had an idea of what it could be but she dare not say anything for the time being. Viola clearly remembered when she too was like this, throwing fits whenever Tate did something out she was going to allow Amber find out what that hate really was.
