We all did the best we could to set up the room. Since we had little to no information about the new princess it made for a difficult task. I set out the theme for the room. The room was to smell of lavender, a calming scent. The colours would be light blue and purple. I think it had matched a photo which we had been sent later that night from the queen herself.
I opened the photo. We had been told she was small, but compared to the man that was shielding her in this picture, she was tiny. The princess was beautiful with white-blonde hair and icy blue eyes. The large dark-haired man in the photo looked like he was trying to protect her. From what, who knows? The photo was candid for sure. The couple had no awareness in the facial expressions.
The colors in the room matched her, but the clothes would need to be bolder to not fade her out completely. We finished the room with real lavender, Aster, Peony, and light blue roses. I was putting the last touches on the order when Prince Cash ran in. I bowed to the mischievous prince.
“Don’t tell them I am here,” the small prince begged.
“Hide in there.” I pointed to the bathroom as he ran and hid behind the door. I quickly closed it so no one could see and returned to fiddling with the flower arrangement. I wondered what trouble the little prince had gotten me or himself into.
It didn’t take too long to find out. Just as I touched the first rose, the royal guard entered the room with the tutor.
“Where is he?” The tutor asked.
“Who?” I questioned. “This is to be the new Princess’s room and I am very busy.”
The guard began to walk around. “If you wouldn’t mind...” I started to ask them to leave, and the tutor may have bought it, but the guard wasn’t fooled. After all, he was used to the little Prince’s antics.
He interrupted, in a loud voice meant for the little Prince. “I guess I will have to take you in for interrogation. Who knows, maybe the dungeon or exile for you.”
The tutor was just staring at the guard bewildered. He must have been new. The little Prince Cash tended to run tutors off. He was 10 but acted like five. The king did not allow him much interaction with people outside of the palace. Other than siblings and staff, he had no interaction at all.
I was not going to back down. “If you must,” I said with my best acting voice. “There is no Prince here.”
The guard’s lips turned up in a smile as I matched his bluff. I was not a skilled actress, and my performance would not have moved anyone to belief. Except maybe this tutor. Who still stood there looking flustered.
“Well, young lady, let's go.” The guard pointed the way to the door.
Was he serious? I looked at him to judge his resolve. He nodded his head toward the door. “Let’s go.” He said again.
I took the first step towards the door as Cash came crashing through the bathroom door. His golden-brown hair all disheveled. His bright green eyes stared at the guard in defiance.
“You can’t take her. I made her lie for me,” he demanded. “I am tired of history and want to go outside and play or something, anything else.” The added moan at the end made me smile.
I knelt by him, “Thank you for saving me.” I said, grabbing his little hands. “You are my hero.”
Cash looked up at me with his 10-year-old eyes so full of pride.
“See I saved her from your evil clutches.” He told his guard. The guard’s eyes rolled. “Maybe she can play with me later.”
“You know tomorrow there will be another child named Katie for you to play with.” His guard replied.
I looked at the guard inquisitively. “Katie is about your age and will be coming with the princess.”
This princess is even more interesting than I thought. I turned to Cash. “Maybe another time. I have so much to do to get ready.”
The guard and Cash left. The Tutor, however, turned and looked at me and said, “You are good with kids.”
“It comes naturally. Growing up in an orphanage, you get practice with all ages. The older ones are expected to look out for the younger ones,” I said. “I really…”
” Well, yes.” The tutor almost coughed out. Stopping me in my tracks and he quickly exited.
After he was gone, I closed the door and sighed. I finished all the settings in the room. Everything was where it needed to be. I guess I would have an hour left to run after all. I closed, locked the door, and headed down to the kitchen to put in the order for the fruit.
I hurried outside. I had one hour until I was needed back for dinner. “A thirty-minute run?”
“Yes, please,” Skia responded. “We don’t know how busy the princess will make us. It might be our last option for some time if they arrive in the morning.”
She was right. It was weird we didn’t know the exact time of arrival. “Only thirty-minutes though. We need to be back to help with dinner.”
I made it to the spot, and we shifted. “I know,” Skia responded to me.
With that, she started to run. She was flawless at jumping, but our run was cut short. As we were jumping a rock, we heard the warriors were on our track. No one had seen me shift yet. They didn’t know about Skia.
They could probably sense I was pack but couldn’t recognize me. I couldn’t let them find out about Skia. I wasn’t ready to explain. Even if caught, I had no answers. What would be done to me? No, I couldn’t let them catch me.
We sprinted back to our spot. I shifted and changed. I had lost them but would cross their path on the way back to the palace. I could hear the warriors commenting as we passed about how fast Skia was. That she was so large and quick that maybe she was a ghost. It made me smile as I went back to help with dinner.
After dinner, Amelia was back with her clothing, so I headed back up to the room. As I walked up to the room, I could hear Prince Cash running down the hall. He saw me and ran straight, to me, almost knocking me over with all the clothes.
“Please help hide me like you did before.” He exclaimed out of breath. I unlocked the door, turning to relock it and ushered him in. His dark hair was all tossed about.
“What is this all about?” I asked as I put clothes up and he plopped down on the floor. Moving his hair out of his way his dark green eye shone with worry.
“I don’t want to meet the princess and her daughter,” he demanded.
“Is that all?” I said as I joined him on the floor.
He looked up at me again. “What if they don’t like me?”
I took his hand. “I am just as worried as you. What if the princess doesn’t like her room?” I motioned around.
His eyes roamed the room. “It’s OK, for a girl’s room.” He grimaced.
“That is not the vote of confidence I needed.” I laughed. “How about we make a deal? If tomorrow the princesses are horrible or they do not like either of us, we promise to look out for each other.”
I could hear hard footsteps coming closer. It would be his night guard. “Now, how about you give your guard peace of mind and head back to your room?” I asked.
“Pinky swear?” He held his pinky up.
I took his pinky finger in mine. “I, Millie, swear to give you Prince Cash a hiding spot if needed.”
He smiled, “I swear as well.”
Just then, there was a booming at the door. I unlocked it as he pushed it open. The night guard and I tumbled to the ground, injuring my hip.
“Hello, and ow.” I said as I untangled myself and stood. “Prince Cash wanted to do a thorough inspection of the room before arrival.”
“Your highness,” I said, bowing to Cash. “Did it pass inspection?”
He looked at me like I had lost my mind. My eyes widened and I made a slight motion at the guard. He just laughed and ran out of the room, guard in tow.
I looked around the room. It was still in place. Who knows what our futures hold in the end? At least for now, we can rest easy with the pinky sworn protection of a Prince. I giggled to myself as I left and locked the door.
