Accalia's POV
I broke down in sobs, uncontrollable sobs... my heart felt like it was ripped straight out of my chest, crushed in someone's hand, and then stepped on.
Who would do such a thing?
Who would destroy a whole pack? What will they gain out of it?
Oh Goddess, my younger brothers..! They were only pups!
I could barely breathe... the news destroyed everything inside me... the pain moved through my body like I was holding a live cable, and the electric current moved through my body and burned every living part inside me.
Lidia howled inside my mind, she might not have known my family, but she could feel my heart breaking...
Get yourself under control! I growled at myself, you are a rank wolf for Goddess's sake!
Never show weakness!
Then reality hit me... and the sobbing started again...
I was now alone in the world...
I had no family left... no blood that I could call my own... I was a rank she-wolf who left her pack to go rogue... I have betrayed my pack, my father, and my brothers!
My heart pinched, remembering the promise I made to my mother to always be there for my brothers... and now this...
I had broken the vowel I made to my dying mother...
I cried my heart out...
"Accalia," Liam called, and I lifted my head, following his voice to where he stood. He was nervously standing and watching me and waiting patiently for me to stop crying and gain control. I got a feeling he wasn't used to someone breaking down and crying, yet something in his eyes reflected that he knew how it felt to lose someone you love.
"Roger and I need to be going, or else we won't make our destination on time," he said, and hesitated for a second.
"... uhm... after we are done with our little adventure, I would gladly help you return to your pack... if you like..? Would you like to come with us...?" He asked.
Returning to my pack... was that what I wanted? Will I still have a status? Will I be accepted back? Will I be bullied and humiliated by my pack again? Will it be worth it? Could I rebuild my pack and then seek him who had killed my brother and now my family?
"You would do that for me?" I asked with a shaken voice. Was he for real? He doesn't know me? Will he keep his promise and help me?
Liam gave me a nod of the head, and a warm smile filled his face.
"I would do that for you. Dean was my friend and I would gladly help you to return to your rightful place as Luna," he answered.
Luna...
I never thought about that...
Now that my family is... gone... I am rightfully the Luna of the Blue Moon pack...
I wiped the remaining tears from my face and gave him a nod of the head.
"Will you be able to shift?" He asked.
"Yes, give me a minute..." I answered and walked towards the trees and stripped myself of my baggy clothes.
When I returned, I found Nova's and Roger's gazes pinned on one another, and the atmosphere had become thick around them.
"What's going on?" I asked Nova, and she jumped when she heard my voice.
"N-n-nothing..." she mind-linked back.
"This doesn't look like nothing..." I said and turned my gaze to Roger.
His wolf was unconcerned about what I just saw or felt.
"Uhm... Roger... uhm... he's my... mate," Nova answered and my eyes widened hearing it.
"Well, congratulations," I said, "I'm happy for you..."
Was that the reason why she urged me to find out who they were?
Yet, Nova didn't look too happy about finding her mate, and I couldn't help but ask why.
"Uhm..." she hesitated, and took a second before she explained, "Roger is my second chance mate..."
"Oh," that I didn't expect, and c****d my head to the side, trying to read Nova.
"My fated mate was an Alpha..." she said, trying to hide the sadness in her voice.
Was that the reason why Nova was so anxious around ranked wolves? Did her mate hurt her? Did he reject her..?
A sudden flare of anger boiled up in me, and I balled my fist out of anger, if I ever...
"You have a soft spot for Nova," Lidia mused, "and you care more for her than you think..."
I was shocked at Lidia's words, and it took the wind right from under my wings, and the anger died in me.
She might be right, and maybe because we have been together for so long, I saw her more than just a companion... more as a sister I never had... but maybe as actually family... but, will I defend and protect her?
It took me less than a second to decide that I would...
"You are right, I guess I grew fond of her..." I answered, but Lydia just raised an eyebrow...
We took off toward a part of the mountains I haven't been to yet. Not that I didn't want to investigate the area, on the contrary, the area we were entering was believed to be cursed.
I wonder if the town below was part of the so-called curse.
Liam went at a slower jog, and I took the opportunity to appreciate the mountains stretching around us.
I turned my head and moved my gaze over the beautiful valley. A smile reached my lips, feeling the calmness the mountain range gave me. My father would have loved this picture-perfect scene before me...
The mountains stretch their hills wide and high in all different colors of blue and grey... the scene... was breathtaking...
I suddenly had the urge to paint these valleys, to show the world what they were missing up here...
I took a mental picture... One day I will a do a painting of this place, in honor of my family.
Roger flew passed me, breaking my chain of thoughts by running toward the edge of the mountain, then yapped excitingly about something he found.
I walked closer, not in a rush, wondering what Roger had found.
The downpour, of water, became louder and louder.
"I guess it's a river of some sort," Lidia commented. She has been quietly sitting in the back of my mind. I guess she wanted to give me some space to get to terms with what happened to my pack and family.
I let out a heartbreaking breath... if what Liam said was true, the event took place years ago... my family has been dead for a while...
I can't change that, but I can help rebuild my pack, that's if they are still willing to take me back...
"We will convince them..." Lidia said.
"Yeah, we will..."
"We will show them we are tough and that we are worth the title..!"
"Yes!" I nodded my head, "yes we will!"
Liam shook his head and huffed in annoyance.
Roger's wolf, in return, pulled his ears back and whimpered...
Oh no... was Liam angry? And at what?
I walked to the edge to see what the commotion was about, and I internally started to laugh.
No wonder Liam was annoyed... just a couple of feet down an old hanging bridge lay ruined between the valley.
Whoever used it last would be extremely lucky if they did succeed in crossing to the other side. The waters below were wild, dark, and dangerous, and the chances of survival would be slim.
Liam started again, and we followed after... Around the next bend, a red glowing peak came into sight, and I shivered, feeling the unholiness that enveloped it...
I immediately knew where we were... I have heard stories of this place and it was the one place that all creatures feared coming close to... Devil's Peak...
Devil's Peak got its name from the red glow it had in the early mornings and late afternoons. No one knew why it glowed, because the foot of the peak was constantly covered in mist and fog, no one dared to go to it... and those who did were never seen again...
Liam became agitated and was sniffing the surrounding area.
What was he looking for?
He didn't exactly tell us where we were going, and obviously, it would have been nice if he had. Maybe then we could have helped him look.
I sighed, as I turned toward a different area, hoping to find the mysterious item Liam was looking for...
Mysterious item... that reminded me that I would have to return to our cave... our personal belongings were still there, and even though I didn't have much, there was an item that I found inside the cave...
At first, I didn't think much about it. That was until I saw the marking matching the cave's entrance.
"Cave!" I yapped excitingly and jumped up and down, showing everyone that I had found an entrance. The cave's entrance was surrounded by dark red stones.
Interestingly enough, the stones were placed in such a way that it gave an illusion of a creature who had its jaw unlocked and ready to swallow whoever entered...
Liam gave me a nod of the head, and if I didn't know any better, he almost smiled at me in wolf form... he was sure happy about my find.
We entered the cave and started forward, but Liam froze in his spot and turned around, watching the sunset and the last sunrays touching the stones around the entrance, creating a spectacular red show.
"Wow!" Lidia said, "that's amazing!"
"That you can say again!" I mused, who could have thought that the red stones could be able to light up the peak and create a spooky and horrific atmosphere...
Liam turned around and gestured for us to go forward.
I started to compare the cave to what we had. Except for the masses of water that I could feel the vibration under my paws, the cave was damp but didn't have the beautiful Stalagmites and stalactites in the cave. I sighed, I will miss the beauty of our cave...
About ten minutes or so later, we saw a dim light indicating the exit.
Liam increased his pace, and I got a feeling that he became excited about something.
I, on the other hand, was keeping my pace, looking around and enjoying the scenery.
My gaze caught Nova giving glances at Roger's way, and I found it quite cute.
Roger, on the other hand, was a goofball. He jumped around as we went down the mountain. I guess he tried to impress Nova somehow.
The downpour below caught my attention, and I increased my pace. I ran past the two lovebirds, leaving them behind.
What I saw next was beyond spectacular...
