Chaz’s jaw tightens as he searches for words to say and when he finally speaks up, his voice is stiff. “She was a friend.” “Was?” He looks away then takes the fork and gently taps it on the corner of the plate, creating an irritating clinking sound in my ears. “Why do you suddenly ask about her?” Now, it’s my turn to think of something to say. I purse my lips while staring at his face. “Cause you never mention a friend named Mallory to me before.
