After a clingy goodbye from my dramatic mother at 8:00 pm, we took a couple of pictures in the living room before heading to school in Katie’s car.
We opted out of bringing dates to the dance because of our little, secret mission and honestly, it would have been a little tiresome trying to entertain and dance with them all night. Pulling out our phones from her clutch, Katie handed me mine with a grin.
“It’s go time girl, I already set our alarms to remind us to sneak out of the gym when it's time and we’ll have to be quick about sneaking in and out of the Principal’s office so we don’t get caught.”
Nodding in reply, I hooked my phone into the stretchy band wrapped around my thigh. The light green garter is a borrow from my mother since I couldn’t find a nice little clutch to work with my dress, and there was no way my cell was going to fit between my breasts with the neckline.
The party was underway by the time we got to school and I let myself get distracted by the dark themed decorations outlining the basketball court.
Katie pulled me towards a bowl of red punch and with each of our cups filled, I reluctantly followed her to the dance floor. One hour, and 6 cups of spiked punch later, I knew I was drunk. Especially when I found myself grinding against Zack on the dance floor.
He came dressed as a pirate, without a shirt, and he looked hot showing off those muscular pecks. I was startled by the vibration on my leg and it took me a second to realize it’s the alarm on my phone, pushing aside the split of my dress I pull out my cell from the garter belt and heard Zack mumble something like “s**t" beneath his breath.
His eyes didn’t stray from the now covered thigh for a long minute, but I was too intoxicated and focused on the alarm to question what’s wrong with him.
Mumbling something about a bathroom, I rushed out of the gym on unsteady legs and ran to the Principal’s office as fast as I could.
Katie was waiting impatiently by the door when I stumbled into the empty hallway, and she frowned as she watched me swaying her way. Throwing her hands in the air, she shook her head with a groan before turning to the office door.
“You made it!” I exclaimed in excitement, then covered my mouth when I realized I said that a little too loud.
Pressing down the code, and slipping in the key to unlock the door she pushed it open when the alarm let out a soft little sound of agreement, and tugged on my hand so my drunk self can slip in behind her.
“Yikes, your mum wasn’t joking about this place being littered with dogwood flowers.”
“How are we supposed to find the map now?” I whispered, settling on the couch across the room to stop my dizzying vision.
“How many cups of that punch did you have?”
Raising 6 fingers in the air I smiled sheepishly, thankful I could at least see better now that my head wasn’t spinning so much.
“You are so going to regret that decision tomorrow.” She mumbled, pulling me off the couch. “Now come on, let’s get searching.”
We searched through each flower pot for over 20mins before I felt something inside one of them, the problem is, we’d have to completely pull out the soil and plant to get it.
With no other choice, Katie smashes the pot on the floor and knelt when it shattered to pieces with a loud sound. I flinched in shock and raised my head in fear of someone hearing and coming in, but thankfully no one did.
Shuffling through the pieces of clay and soil on the floor, she finally found the gold map my mother talked about and the thing weighed a ton even though its only the size of my fist.
We hurriedly fled the crime scene, resetting the alarm and ensuring we locked the doors, but completely forgot to clear away the damaged plant and the scattered soil on the floor.
Laughing stupidly, we ran to the parking lot to Katie’s car and covered the map with a cloth before hiding it beneath the passenger seat in Katie’s clutch.
Too busy trying to sneak back into the party, we didn’t notice the shadow following us ever since we slipped into the Principal’s office. Once it was time for the fireworks show, everyone shuffled out of the school building to the parking lot so we could watch the fireworks display.
“Hey, where have you been?” Zack asked, his sudden appearance startling me as he stepped up to my side while I leaned against Katie’s car.
Recalling how close we were back at the gym, I bite down on my lip in embarrassment. Fighting back an amused grin, Katie murmured like she was the confused drunk between of the two of us.
“I Uhm, uh, I, I need to leave.”
And without a backward glance, she walked off before I could voice any protest. That little traitor!
“I’m so-sorry about earlier at the t-the gym,” I said, clearing my throat after a minute spent in silence.
Zack grinned, giving a small shrug in response. “I’m not.”
“Look, Zack, I have no idea what the hell you want from me but I am not going to be some rebound or your idea of a revenge against Melody.” I scowled, even though I'm slightly drunk I wasn't that intoxicated to make stupid decisions.
Tipping my head in the direction of the lip-locked couple standing underneath the darkened shade of a tree when he glanced at me in confusion.
Though almost everyone was either too drunk or pretty occupied by the upcoming fireworks to notice, I could still see a considerable amount of people gape in the direction of the interlocked duo.
He didn’t turn to look though, which let me know he’s already aware of them.
“I’m not trying to use you, despite what you might think.” He frowns. “Melody and my brother have been together all year, but she didn’t want to publicly break up our relationship because she liked the attention we received as a couple."
“Uhm.. what?"
He shrugs. “And since my brother is completely whipped for Melody, he agreed to her outrageous plan of the both of them being together in secret.”
“Soo… the two of you have been separated for over a year?” I asked in surprise, and he nodded.
